read about Høyersten yourself. since berserker is a german word (well BER is germanic and not "nordic") the term is later introduced, but the desciption of "warriors in pelt and fighting rage" is older. there are a lot of sagas that desprice people in rage. the use of shrooms and Hallucinogens is also in play. and the "berserker" from stamford bridge is a worth a read.

Sweyn Forkbeards younger brother Cnut the Great should've been on this list. He conquered England, Norway, Southern Sweden, good chunk of northern coastal Germany and other areas and ruled over the largest empire that any Scandinavian ruler ever had. Plus, he is the only King in history of Europe to be recognised by the Holy Roman emperor as his equal.

Form follows function. Horns on a helmet would be bad for its function, which is staying on one's head and protecting it from blows.

I think that Viking who held off the English Army on that bridge single handedly deserves a mention funny how his deed is remembered but the warriors name has been lost to time

No, not true, the first swedish king you know acually existed is Erik Segersäll. Father to Olaf Skötkonung. Thats the first real dynasty. Björn Järnsida was, if not a completly mythological character, a cheif.

I've watched about 10 of your videos today. I'd just like to thank you for not having a 2 minute long dubstep into. You get right to the facts, and I appreciate it.
Who else gets really excited for the Future of The Vikings Tv series cause of this?
Its cool to know that three of the characters are on this list and what we can expect from Bjorn and especially Ivar. I know from this that ragnar will die sooner or later but its great to know Ivar will avenge him. They are only gonna get more bad ass from here it seems. Cant wait to see it.
Ivar was the oldest son of Ragnar. That's why he acted so agressively against the king of Northumbria, who had killed his father. The tale of Bjørn Ironside raiding an Italian city is also told about Hasting who took the city Luna in the same way. Raiding it so effectively that it was abandoned. Hasting believed that he had taken Rome, probably the cause of much laugther among other vikings. Egil is famous for not needing a helmet in battle, his head was so strong that it resisted any blow. This was confirmed when he was exhumed several hundred years later and his skull only got a white mark when hit hard with an axe. He was very grumpy (depressive?). The only poem I remember (short one) goes like this:

Both Norway and Dennmark had some great vikings being Norwegian i know of more famous Norwegian/Icelandic vikings then Danish but i have heard of Knut and Ivar the boneless

They were peasants living in the mountains, many of them exterminated by a warlord of Japan who burned everything where they lived. Many of them commited suicide so their tricks would die with them. They were basically rebels against tyranny.
Another ridiculous misconception by archaeologists... Ivar the Boneless...was not a cripple and did not have fragile bones. There is no evidence for that whatsoever in any sagas of the time.
First of all, a Viking only attained a nickname once he had proven himself in some way! hence no child would be named Ivar the boneless. His name was given because he was so incredibly agile and flexible in battle, and they called him boneless.
Think about it....with the poor medical treatments at the time...how would they know that his bones were fragile and would shatter? And if they did shatter, they would not be able to heal them, as they did not go in for preserving the weak and frail, it is an utterly stupid analogy as to how he got his name.
And another aspect....he was renowned for his skill as an archer ... ever tried shooting a 100lb draw 6 foot longbow while sitting down? Just try it some time and you will see why this is not why he was a renowned archer.
No viking could have ever attained kingship and held onto it if he were a cripple with weak bones, because kingship changed hands on a simple challenge by any warrior....and he would never have been able to survive against a viking warrior with an axe or sword, sitting on his ass on the ground!
Stupid archaeological assumptions that have no basis in logic.
Here's another little tidbit to ponder... In latin the language of the church to which he raided and slaughtered often.... his name was spelled Ivar the EXOS meaning Ivar the Boneless but the term for Ivar the Hated is spelled EXOSUS.... Does it make sense at all that Latin Priests would have named him ...boneless because he was a cripple and fragile....or was it a misspelling over time and his name was Ivar the Hated....Think about it!
Aside from all that, I have a written viking ancestral record of my family tree, from my great grandfather Vilhjálmur Sigurbjörn Friðbjörnsson in icelandic, that goes back to 720ad. It includes Ragnar Lodbrok, Ivar the Boneless , Eric the Red and Leif Erickson...and it doesn't just depict lineage. It describes battles and who married who and what children they had and who murdered who in a swordfight.... Ivar the Boneless....WAS NOT A CRIPPLE!

If it wasn't a misspelling, which is the most likely explanation IMO. My guess is that he was simply double-jointed. I'm not saying your other suggestion isn't also possible, but I think having extra bendy fingers and such sounds like the perfect source of a nickname.

Well my book is about what happens when a Viking enters bloodlust... Only difference is I'm going to write the main character as an absolutely, homicidally insane person. Hopefully it works out.

@DIALECTIC Boogaloo, in a homogenous family, such as the scandinavian... it's not too hard to trace your lineage back. One thing that makes it easier is the family names... usually the words pre "sson" or "Dottir" meant they were the daughter or son of the person in the beginning of that last name.
For most of the other Europeans though, we've been mutts from the early days of the Anglo-Saxons. And as immigration became more prominent, more races were added to your bloodline. In scandinavia, people usually stayed with scandinavians and nobody really bothered them.

Ragnar is considered to be a legend though. You should add Gongu Hrolfur (Rollo the walker) to the list. He was said to be so big that he had to walk next to his horse. The king of France offered him to become a nobleman and rule over Normandie in exchange for preventing other viking clans to sail up the Seine and protect Paris from raids. Like a bouncer who wont let his friends into a club because they cant handle themselves

Egill was actually born and raised in Iceland (he was a first generation Icelander) , He was only outlawed from Norway after killing the kings friend while visiting Norway. And you know just going on raids is not what made him so badass, He lead an army of something around 150-300 men, He spent most of his childhood raiding with his brother (in the baltic, Norway Denmark sweden, Holland and in scotland), was hated by 3 Norwegian kings in a row (Eric bloodaxe, his brother who over threw him and their father Harald fairhair), He fought as a mercenary for the king of England and in it helped him reclaim york from the scotts, then becme close personal friend with the king of England, he defeated a berserker in a duel by biting his throat apart since his weapons were well ineffective. he even challange the king of Norway to a duel (the king did not accept and that was Eric Blodaxe so no Valhalla for him) he killed countless of enemy's during his, Each duel he fought in he was topless, and when he finally settled down in Iceland he took charge of his father land (which had many people living on it) and became one of the most powerful chieftains in Iceland and used his power to manipulate the Alþingi in his favor becoming a very corrupt politician! and Only two years after his death in 998 Iceland accepted Christianity.
Gunnar Hámundarson was also an Icelander.
Njal's and Egil's Sagas are my two favorite. I lost count of how many men Egil's killed. Starting at 6, and killing his last two men in his 80's. Definitely the best of the Sagas.

ALPHA Enzura That doesn't change the fact that they were born in Iceland which was an indipendent country at the time or from 930-1262. Which makes them Icelandic. Also Iceland was nowhere near only Norwegian with half the population comminh from Ireland, and many comming from Denmar, Sweden and Germany. Recent Dna studies suggest that a large proportion of them were also slavic. The Norwegians made up most of the nobility however.

ERROR: It was Harold, King of Saxon England, not William the Conqueror, who defeated Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge. (Later the same year, William defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings.)

Good so apparently there is more than one of these "poet warriors." Some of the psalms in the Bible were written by David who also has some stories about him being a great warrior, so there are probably more. Can you do a video titled the toughest warrior poets known. The two requirements could be they must have poetry attributed to them and great feats of bravery, toughness or general warrior bad-assery attributed to them from a source other than themselves

True, he fought Harold Godwineson, who then had to run down the length of England and face William the Conqueror (my ancestor). Actually half the people on this list are ancestors, some for sure, some depending on the primary source you use...
