They have certications depending where you buy them, chemical free, echo friendly and stuff. An alternative to normal pads is a reusable pad, people are selling now fabric made reusable pads, they dont leak to your undies, have this safety press-on thingy (i dont know the name), you only wash your own blood when you feel like its time, dry it and re use it.

Also, keeping the stomach warm especially with a hot water bottle helps relax the muscles. If it's too bad, ask your female relative if there is any pill you can take.
