The reason why you'd "want to turn it off" is because it doesn't work. Got a brand new S23 and 90% of messages don't get sent. Never had a problem with SMS messages before. The system wasn't broken so don't try to fix it. Computer programmers are always trying to " improve" things but the problem is the don't do sh-t worth of testing and push out some half as-ed Beta version that doesn't work fully.
RCS is essentially like WhatsApp, Instagram , or other social media where it requires internet connection to send a message or something. Although I love the options of viewing whether a person has read my messages etc for regular messaging, I leave that to social media because suppose you don't have internet then how will you speak to me?
I swear i never asked for this now it always says that i have to wait for the other person to be online its fucking horrible

Why would you want to turn it off? Because your pics fail and it sends your message making you look like a idiot. Sometimes messages will send an hour later or not at all. They just force this on you and make it nearly impossible to remove. Thank you for this video.
For me, I had some “not received” regular text messages I sent (no pics or emojis) using RCS. That’s what led me to research what it was and I didn’t realize that my phone had switched to it automatically. I learned that to turn it off I have to delete ENTIRE message threads! You can’t just turn it off going forward to switch back to SMS. Also, I learned that RCS messages were sending extra info to the recipient that I wasn't aware of. I never opted in for RCS messages or agreed to share info I was previously not sharing with SMS so it seems like it is super creepy to me and also unnecessary as I never had trouble sending photos or emojis before with SMS.

OMG thank you, this is a very annoying 'feature' that meant I reply to people who later on email me to ask if I got their SMS and it looks like I am annoying them. It is beyond belief they make this the default and hide the settings in a less than obvious place.
Thank you! More than half of my messages and those that others were sending to me were not going through even when I was on wifi/data. SMS has always been perfectly functional anyways making RCS completely unnecessary. Now I can finally get in touch with people!

Exactly! Google needs to ensure things are working 100% before installing and making them the default application. Not only were my msgs not being sent but it didn't tell me they weren't sent for hours, sometimes not until the next day! Frustrating.
Thanks for the video. Upgraded my phone recently and it was defaulted to RCS. About half the messages I send to people didn't go through and gave me an error. Was really getting annoyed by that. Also we use a prepaid phone service and it has limited data. We get plenty of texts so would rather use them than use up data to send a message.
What is the benefit of having this feature that means if my Google account is tapped they can get into my messages and if my email is sync this can all be leaked out.
Maybe because youre sending it to a user with an iPhone because apple does block the usage of RCS on iOS.

I never opted into RCS messaging. I wasn't given an option. It was not explained. My messages don't always send, and I have to go back in and change it to SMS messaging in order for it to send. Ridiculous!

They dont send because only android users can use RCS since apple is blocking RCS on iPhones because they want people to use iMessages.

Im just annoyed that the rcs chat pop-up keeps appearing telling me to turn on rcs chats. I just dont want it to pop-up ever again. This was before i didnt even have a google message app.
is RCS chat messages to send text messages for free over the internet? great concept if that is what it is. however, sometimes it won't send especially when I have an important message chat (text message) going on with someone that has come down 4-5 hours away and we don't want to miss crucial messages that we require instantly, not minutes or hours later or never.

Why doesn't the new incoming message notification disappear, even though I have read the incoming message and deleted it, the new incoming message notification still doesn't disappear. That's very annoying. I deleted the application and reinstalled it, but still the new incoming message notification doesn't go away.

I get cab rides and they send me auto updates with times and vehicle info, etc. and for some reason when RCS turned on, it stopped ALL auto-generated messages...not just from cab companies but also Door Dash, etc.

The issue is a general one with the abusive way that Google is enhancing Android, regardless of the wishes of users. This follows the Windows trend where they think they own the devices which we paid for.
The solution is not to abandon Android, but to go to a version of Android that does not add on all the Google extras. Those versions are based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and my current favourite is /e/os
Murena sell a range of phones with this pre-installed (mostly refurb, some brand new including the Fairphone FP5). That's great for those who want a full warranty or who simply are not confident reflashing expensive hardware.

I have found that if I send an image to anyone with an iPhone that the image quality is greatly reduced. Assuming this has to do with the RCS?

Please don't tell me how I "should" use my own property, I paid money for my phone and resent Google trying to nag me to change. Don't collude with them, please
I did it because my messages were constantly not being sent and it didn't tell me they weren't sent for hours after I thought they had went out. I'd receive the message, "message not sent yet" 5 hours after I sent them and since these were important, time dependent messages, it was a huge problem. So I finally turned it off.
Why would I want to turn off the RCS? Because none of the messages will send, but as soon as I tap each individual message and change it to regular text it send immediately. And the instructions you gave do not match in any way my list of options. These instructions do not work.

Can you try looking in your general settings and typing in the search bar RCS.
Will come up with an option to turn it on, so hit that and it'll give you the button to turn it off.

You know it gets harder and harder to defend android at this point, like why tf is my only valid arguments about a android is having homebrew and free pirated apps but then i jus sound like a cheap ass and even then android is making it harder to get those apps , thank god i switched to the iphone 14 , smoothest phone experience I've ever had and ive had all types of androids from the Lgs to the samsung galaxy
In fairness, the problem is not with the core Android product, but with the Google add-ons. There are alternatives available for some phones, see my longer post as a top level comment

Apart from the fact that messages won't send, why would i use the messages when i have whatsapp if not to write to someone who probably doesn't have an internet connection? Thats litteraly the only reason i would use it, so the fact that now it goes through the internet by default is kinda stupind ngl
Not even on account of the obvious bugs, but it's like people now have to justify themselves if they don't want to "upgrade" "switch to hi-tech", etc... Basic good functions don't need improvement, a good spaghetti has been a good spaghetti for 800 years.

You're not detailed enough you could film a little bit closer and slowed down a lot. You're like hit the messenger and I don't even know what that is only designed for I don't know who don't know how it got on my phone and don't want it and the reason is because it doesn't send anywhere so that's why some people don't want it on their phone I never asked for it and it only pops up on some of them and I cannot make it go away no offense thanks for trying to help but this didn't do me a bit of good😢

I don't want to turn them off: I don't want them to appear ever. I say why below. At present in Android 13 every time i want to send a text it nags me to turn on RCS. It's a waste of my time
What happened to "don't ask me again" as good practice?
I'm told that I could turn them on, then turn them off again and apparently that will stop the nag.
The problem with that is that it requires agreeing to the RCS terms of service and to making a link between my phone number and my account. And that link does not go away once RCS is turned off.
What other sneaky practice am i agreeing to invest the counter? And is this the real reason for the nag?
This is the most annoying feature of the -upgrade- usability downgrade from Android 12 to 13. Other annoying features can at least be disabled with a free minutes effort; but this one is an egregious imposition on me to agree to something i don't want.
This is the last straw: I've been getting increasingly irritated with Google's unilateral changes over the last few upgrades; and this is strongly motivating me to install a Google-free ROM instead of the Android-with-Google version. Front runner is /e/os at present.
So if you know a way to disable this nag without signing up to RCS first, let me know and you might just keep me as a Google user.
And if anyone from Google HQ is reading this: how about implementing a checkbox for "don't ask again" in the very next Android 13 update. If you don't, I'll be off for good.
Stop telling us how to use our devices. By all means give us choices but don't sulk if we don't want what you advise.
And don't disable community posts feeding back things we dislike. Implies a zero accountability culture.

Reasons I wanted to turn if off.
* It often does not send messages.
* It says it can NOT send message and prompts me to send by SMS. What a waste of time and delays sending message.
* Lots of annoying un-necassay stuff pops up when using it, wasting my time.
* Auto suggestions, if not looked at carefully, lead to mistakes. Goodness I know what I want to say.
