I love boarding actions - my favourite way to play 40K and I’m SO glad they’ve updated it properly for 10th. The missions in the book are reprints but a few of the mechanics were clunky in 10th so those have been updated…. The detachments are all new though and very different from what we’ve had to now. The strats and enhancements are not just reprints from codexes either (with some exceptions), there’s lots that are specific to this format… even a bunch of the army rules have been adapted. I’m impressed!
The main systems seem to be moving to a {Big Shop (super-beginner) -> Closed Game/OneBox/Boardgame (beginner/light fun) -> Open-Ended Game (Intermediate/advanced) [-> Big Open-Ended (Intermediate/Advanced)]} offering/progression model. e.g. {'Lair of the Beast'-type -> Darktide -> Kill Team} or {'Space Marine The Game'-type -> Combat Patrol -> Boarding Actions -> Big 40K}, etc. I've been steadily acquiring the terrain and assorted accoutrements (at some expense!), and have the book ordered; it's good to have that closed-form layer option for non-beginner players that sits beneath the Bleeding-Edge-FOMO layer. i.e. you can buy this stuff and it's still useable, when the New Normal moves onto the next mandatory must-have. It also means you can get a variety of teams/factions without languishing in 5-non-finished-armies limbo.
I keep meaning to try Boarding Actions on an open board, using alternating activations. Sadly I’ve been completely distracted by The Old World and Spearhead. Spearhead... I get what they were aiming for. So much better than Combat Patrol (okay, didn’t take much to be better than combat patrol), but I think they could have created a much more repeatable gaming experience by using a double board set. More opportunity for maneuver for one. And perhaps even breaching the concept of alternating activations, perhaps as an optional/advanced rule set.
Honestly boarding action makes me wish that combat patrols or generic box would work for the system, but the combat patrol rules would just let you list bill to 500 points with a couple stipulations like how many vehicles you bring and maybe a few other things. It’s also nice to see you book from GW. That’s just rules and mission. Formats might be the first book I since the core rule book

They could even do a similar thing to boarding actions with combat patrol: Divide every faction up into 2-3 sub themes as their own detachment with a limited unit selection. For Space Marines for example you could make some sort of patrol (Mostly Tacticus stuff with a few other things), a Vanguard Detachment (Phobos and Phobos adjacent) and some sort of elite strike force (first company stuff) plus one bespoke thing for each divergent chapter (Wolves Warband, Hunters of the Fallen, Death Company suicide attack or the like).
I assume that it’s Agents of the Imperium instead of Deathwatch in the book. Overall, it’s nice to see this bundled into one book. I have all the Arks of Omen books, but going back & forth between 5 books. Hopefully they’ve integrated the errata into this printing.
The Goonhammer review specifies that neither Leagues of Votann detachment allows Hernkyn Yaegir. I think what's really going on is that the overarching Mustering Rules document has not been updated since the launch of 10e. So, I bet we'll see an update to include new units (like the Ork Big Mek - Will he still be allowed to walk through walls?) and account for Legends. Although, I still want to play with Kaptin Badrukk, so I'll keep using the rules for Legends from the current PDF if they just cut them out.
The plants do look nice! Buying the boarding actions book and the codex is lame when seeing what they did with spearhead book. I guess you've still the free supplements at launch to use. Also 2k games hold no interest, far too long to complete a game, so very interested here.
Ok I’m a collector of 40K and have the new box and new marine codex in anticipation of my tons( tonnes ) [im Canadian and actually use the metric system] of into the dark terrain,that I love by the way
What I wanna know is how restricted the detachments are? Like there doesn't appear to be any divergent space marine chapters so are their units available in some of the space marine detachments? Or is it just picking what colour of ultramarine you want to play?
Do you think they will come out with a Spearhead-style game for 40K in the next few months? Or will there just be a new edition of Kill team? Perhaps something completely new no one is expecting?
So the tilt in the camera in order to compensate your tilted posture is kinda tilting to me :D. word play aside. It reminds me of a dutch angle and does kinda make me uncomfortable. I dont recall noticing on the other videos though. maybe because i mainly listen to the audio anyway.
You can't play anything with the Vehicle, Monster, Titanic, Aircraft, or Mounted units. So, Infantry, Swarms, or Primarch (oddly) are valid. I believe that Squighog Riders are Mounted, so are a no-go, but Beastsnaggas on foot are fine and dandy.
I was wondering when GW would update their rules for boarding actions because it was a new play style for the end of 9th. And I’m happy for it because I have 350pts from my obsessive of collecting kill team and being a subscriber to imperium magazine.
If you want to play the way my buddies did with any game was, we never had an end game, we always just used the board size we had and played. Your rules are “cool”? Ok but do they work at home. lol My friend you have lost your love for KT but had to comeback because that’s what the “likes” want. Change the game. You did a video about boss battles in the old system … Redemptor as final boss. Step out and ask us how to extend our game experience. I said before only 3or 4 specialists in a KT game Dnd is back so let’s push narrative play. The new agents of the imperium is just a move In that direction

It would be lovely. And they have: KT Annual 2023 (I can't say about stock internationally though, I suppose). The narrative terrain for boxes 2 and 3 are available, as it's the double set for boarding actions. It annoyed me that there was no way to get the narrative terrain for boxes 1 (ITD) except with all the walls!

list building for combat patrol is easy. MAX 500 pts Lists, with following restrictions : MAX 1 CHARACTER, 0-3 BATTLE LINES; 0-3 OTHERS, NO VEHICULES OR MONSTERS, no [INDIRECT FIRE] Weapons.

I think this would be a much better proposition if the book was packed in with a set of the terrain. But that is not going to happen.

Is it possible to play it without the super expensive GW terrain , like just normal AoS/w40k terrain?
it's incredibly easy, yes. Just use graph paper or a wet-erase mat with a grid and draw the walls and doors on.

I feel 1200-1500 is comfortable for 40k. At 1000 the games are fast and fun but swingy
So, since there are rules for playing boarding actions with 4 players, couldn't it work to just have 2 players with 1k each, using the 4 player rules?

As a Thousand Sons player, I worked out 1 Infernal Master, 10 Rubric Marines, and 5 Scarab Occult Terminators. Not a bad list honestly!
