What a treat it is to listen to Vikram Seth. Thank you BBC
Those little flashes into a poet's task that he shares - Iambic vs a falling cadence, the weight of the rhyme... An absolute delight.
"So I'm a poet... with apologies to my novel readers!"
A refreshingly unexpected or unexpectedly refreshing ending of this interv!
the Indian leftist seem to accommodate Is. lam and its people wholesome unchallenged, but they treat Hind religion and its people as evil, why? share your thoughts mate.
Thank you for interviewing my favourite writer. Can't thank you enough. He will be perfect to take over this stupendous task. Where are you Mr Seth?
I want to thank Vikram Seth for his talk on Hanuman Chalisa and other works. Though he has written Novels,Poetry is close to his heart. I also thank the Presenter for asking relevant questions and making the discussion lively. ❤🎉😂
How beautifully he speaks. Perfect diction. So erudite. I could listen to him for hours.
I love the way he speaks. He is so calm, carrying a natural flow, with a diction as clear as day!
Always a pleasure to listen to him...doesnt matter if it's about Chinese poetry or Hanumanchalisa...I still fail to understand why The Golden Gate isn't as popular as The Suitable Boy.
It is really delightful how Sanjoy Majumdar extracted the originality of genius Vikram Seth. This is the real mode of interviewing a literary personality like Vikram. It's heartening to know the latest translated work of him after reading A Suitable Boy and The Golden Gate.
What a delight it would be to read Seth's translation. Looking forward.
Thank you BBC for this! It's such a pleasure to listen to him speak.
The world needs more poetry today. Looking forward to reading the hanuman chalisa.
Just lovely, thank you BBC! Must get my hands on this translation!
What a treat ♥️
Now socialite aunts can recite Hanuman Chalisa in times of distress.
Great interview of a wonderful author. My favourite is Golden Gate and An Equal Music.
South Indians are not familiar with this hymn, though in telengana, where Hanuman is worshipped by everyone,it is very popular.
M.S. Subbulakshmi ji has so famously sung her rendition of it, by the way ❤ Accessible on YT.
you might know Hanuman as Anjaneya!
My favourite author.
Great interview. Vikram Seth has always been my favorite indian writer in english. I look forward to this latest book from him.
Trust the BBC to take a swipe at the BJP and Hindutva wherever/whenever they can.
It's become de-rigueur for all their journalists to ask about the rise of Hindu nationalism like it is some scourge to be wary of. What else can this nation be other than a Hindu one? And what is so terrible about that?
The talk of the town is, it’s actually FOUR days for the next door-stopper to come out!
How we all adore and imbibe the chalisa… thank you for bringing its expansive beauty to everyone who wants to read, absorb, lift up with it… without drawing artificial lines of entitlement … lovely to hear Vikram Seth’s joyous voice and looking forward to reading his translation of a piece I too have chanted since I was 10!
Wonderful. Thahk you Sanjoy, can't wait to read Vikram's Hanuman Chalisa.
Why is this so abridged? Please upload the full conversation.
We need him to speak more ❤
Boss, salute
Quite intriguing that Vikram Seth should write on Hanuman Chalisa.
सत्य वचन श्रेष्ठ नमन शुद्धु सुखी जीवन सबको शुभ हो श्रीमान।
Thanks to Vikram Seth, now the Hanuman Chalisa can be enjoyed by the elite English speaking Indians.
❤🎉
सिर्फ नागरी, देवनागरी नहीं। सिर्फ भाषा, कोई देवभाषा नहीं। सिर्फ नदी, कोई देवनदी नहीं। सिर्फ भूमि, कोई देवभूमि नहीं।
Bhaskara ❤
He should do the same with the vedas as well.
That's already done way back in all Indian languages, by lots of poets who have re-written in original, all works of Vyasa, Valmiki maharishis...viz., Tulsidas, Kamba, Molla, Pampa etc.
No one has to re-invent the wheel. It's already done. You just eat, what's already cooked, and understand with the help of learned people in the group.
The most important thing is these 18 maha puranas, if you read and understand them is the essence of Vedas.
So Valmiki and Vyasa maharishis have already done the spade work much earlier-aeons, for the benefit of mankind. And then later, all the kavis /poets of yesteryears have all produced authentic original works in almost all Indian languages.
Books from the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan , HQ : MUMBAI...
How the hindutva fanatics have depicted Hanuman as an angry god in car stickers! And ram as solely a warrior god, robbing him of his layered personality. My mother who is 97 and fighting for her life used to do valmiki ramayam parayanam, meaning reading the slokas sargam by sargam all her life, would recite with tears flowing. We all grew up with this idea of a feminine god,who would forgive every single and bless them and protect them. I al appalled by their interpretation of rama and Hanuman.
Rāma is not a 'feminine god', whatever that means. Read the texts for yourself rather than spouting the mumbo jumbo you read by the deracinated commentators of your echo chambers.
It is in an attempt to radicalise and recruit Hindu youth for the creation of hindutva militias and a violent takeover of the Indian state. This is reminiscent of the Taliban and ISIS that used islamic nationalism to radicalise the local arab population.
Precisely.. How do others not see it?
In Vedic astrology, Hanuman represents Mars - the fiery planet that is like a military general.
Don't be a leftist fanatic - thinking what u think is the absolute truth.
You are making a generalized comment basis couple of societal anecdotes.
Which obviously doesn't encapsulate the remaining (99%) ethos around it.
Kindly reconsider. 🙏🙏
Lively. Translating the rhyming words of Calista in English. Vikram needs to write more prose like the biography of his dentist uncle. It was heart breaking how hos fracture of hand was not treated while he was on duty on a war front in spite of his insistence and how the amputation caused by this negligence by English drs was nor done properly and caused him pain all his life, though he again was practicing dentistry. The English world described in this book is second rate and far below the German standards, where his uncle studied his dentistry.
Proud to say my daughter is also a poet.
dont you have any personal achivements to be proud of ??
@@karanswamygowda9:50 sheer cruelty
@@karanswamygowda This is what 10 years of BJP have done, destroyed all decency in the country. A woman trying to taking pride in her own child is being attacked by people like you.

I was suprised that the interviewer took five whole minutes before brining Muslims into the conversation. The work is on Hanuman Chalisa and yet, BBC had to bring in Muslims and call out Hindus for no reason! But this is BBC....old habits die hard!
Even muslims in gujarat chant it. THey should know this!!
Vikram Seth eats a lot of AMUL Chocolates in almost all flavors 🍫
This video unexpectedly gives me hope to do better.
At 5.05 mark I understood why BBC is showcasing this. Now it all adds up.
U are absolutely right!
Right about what. Bunch of BS. Hindutva zealots are misrepresenting Rama and Hanuman for their base motives to spread communalism and besmirching Hinduism. I am glad Vikram read the sections from the introduction.
Asian writing pan Indian and neighboring nations has not been translated and given to world properly as yet and should be done, because they are most insightful thoughtful wise and predicting future with accuracy which is startling too much of western literature has been made of ignoring Asia totally, it’s about time rightful place is given to Asian literature also.
We are here for the Jimny 😅
Why is extreme hinduism considered as Intolerant, whereas extreme Islamist & Christianity is considered as "they just practicing their belief system". And what kind of dictatorship are they talking about? The one happening in Bengal?
Because there is nothing ‘extreme’ about Hinduism and it can’t be compared to the ‘religions of the book’! And, as far as the ‘dictator’ is concerned, we all know who that is 🤪
Vikram is right when he says, we are in a better place than a month ago. The question has been settled, not in a court of law, but where it ought to be… the people of ‘Bharat’ have spoken - period!
We need to go back to ‘jai Siya Ram’ than ‘JAI SHREE RAM’!
@@user-tm6tp2qk2s
👍Well said
Islam and Christianity are extreme even if you interpret it normally. Both believe that their religion is the only way to heaven and everyone else will go to hell. Whereas we believe there are multiple ways to moksha like Bhakti, Gyana and Karma.
Actually, most liberal people condemn extreme Islam as well as extreme Christianity (or any other religion). But news media have been trying to poison and polarise us saying 'liberals support extremism in other religions'. They want people to get angry and fight. But we have to listen to the opposite side carefully, and we will find there is lots to agree upon! Time to be friends and actually start solving real problems.
That literally never happens. Extreme Islamism is criticized every where
"In a better place than we were a month ago. There was an atmosphere of fear and autocracy verging on dictatorship."
So PR does cast its spell well...even on the likes of Him.
Why would Vikram not speak about the thousands of Temples destroyed , thousands upon thousands of Hindus forcefully converted by the Is. lamic. invaders, and the terrorism and attacks carried out in India and across the universe by the Is. lamic occupiers ?
The number of temples destroyed by the Islamic invaders is in low hundreds. This has been decided after years of research by both Indian and international historians
@@ShubhamBhushanCC and when and where were these findings published?
And more importantly, why doesn't he talk about Islamist homophobia? Would he be able to come out as gay in a homophobic Muslim country?
@@anantaguha3062 interesting.
He looks frail, since the last podium talk I saw here on YT
Most of India's problems come from the intolerance of jee hadis - and Mr. Seth says India is lucky to have is-lamic culture!! BS
You mean, lack of jobs, poor healthcare, poor education, polluted cities, rivers and natural resources, border issues with China and Pakistan, lack of basic infrastructure, 19th century railways and transportation, unequal distribution of wealth in society, inequality before the law, poor courts/justice and policing system…the list goes on and on….
In your opinion, all of these real problems are due to “jee hadis”…wow! Shows where your priorities are!
Also add casteism, untouchability, bigotry, huge inhuman economic divide etc have all come because of other religion! What a sham! Nothing wrong in loving your religion, but if it is making you believe other religions are inferior, then there is a problem.this is what has been fed all these year thru WhatsApp.
@@renubohra2388 Who said casteism is a problem? Woke BS!
Untouchability has been removed from 99% of India. Economic disparity has reduced in the last decade (as per GINI coefficient).
However, jee hadism is on the rise in all parts of India. 🐷🤡
@@renubohra2388 Jee hadism is a bigger security problem than all other problems put together- most of which have already been addressed
@renubohra2388 you could.lower that snobbish nose and understand Hindus are not to be slotted into your favourite pigeon holes...just because you desperately want to
Rise of hindutva? Hindutva has always been at the core of this country's soul
Hinduism is an evolving, liberal, beautiful culture which is truly the heart and soul of our country. It is different from Hindutva, which is a regressive, political ideology which will throw us into the dark ages.
Yes that is why we get puzzled at the r militancy of hinduta brigade
i hate BBC news 😒
