    This last year, I've started to see that people are talking more positively about the rx8. Some youtubers and just in comment etc. I feel like the rx8 is increasing in popularity.

      It's probably because it's one of the last few available and cheap JDM performance cars, the car is solid especially with an FC or FD engine swap.

    I love my 05 RX8, daily driver. Original engine rebuilt about a year ago at 131,000 miles. It does suck gas like a 500 cubic inch 1972 Eldorado and has some quirks, but in smiles per mile and the overall cost it cannot be beat.😊

    The RX8 got a bad reputation because a group of inexperienced owners had bad experiences and now all the hate the 8 gets is from people who've never owned a RX8.... buy one while they're are still good ones left on the market. The number of drivable RX8's decreases every year. People are just finding out how capable the 8 platform is. RX8 hit sub 1 minute at Tsukuba this year as well

    One thing I have learned in the current market is that low price doesn't automatically = bad car (if you know what you are looking for).
    I recently bought an immaculate 40th Anniversary with low miles and strong compression - for £3.5k. The car was a 'category N' insuance write off in the UK. This was for non-structural cosmetic damage to the front bumper and headlight washer which, at the time, was considered more expensive to fix than the value of the vehicle (go figure!). Even accounting for the Cat N price reduction it's a hell of a lot of car for the money.
    I spent a long time seaching for the 'right' RX8 and agree 100% with everything you have said about price in the video. There are, unfortunately, a lot of very bad RX8s out there and unless you intend to buy a scrapper and immediately get the engine rebuilt and / or the rust cut out then you need to be very dilligent with research and questions (a good start would be to watch all of the Driven By Madness videos like I did!) Of course, as happy as I am with my RX8, there are still unavoidable and totally ridiculous day to day costs to think about. Yes I have a good engine and yes I have zero rust which means, hopefully, no major expenditure in the medium term. But the tax is an eye watering £600ish per year, the car drinks oil (2T in my case, via a clean oil feed and pre-mixing) and the fuel economy is, literally, absolutely woeful.
    Is it worth it? Absolutely. I can even fit 2 car seats in the back for the kids - it's tough being the coolest dad in town but someone has to do it :)

    • @wrongcheese
      @wrongcheese 7 месяцев назад

      How is insurance for you with the Cat N categorisation?

    • @drqtron3430
      @drqtron3430 7 месяцев назад

      @@wrongcheese cat N had no impact in my case. I'm not totally familiar with how rates are calculated other than 'increased risk of claim = increased premium' but my insurer did suggest that a more serious category of write off would be problematic. As a complete amateur I don't see how structural damage by a different driver could make my ownership more risky, especially if everything was repaired and registered correctly. I do know from experience that some insures will simply decline cover for any category of write off, but again I haven't a clue why. In summary, it's probably somewhere between rational calculation and an absolute racket 🤷‍♂️

    You speak the truth there; I am currently in a position where I'm debating selling it because of debt, but I know for a fact, I am NEVER gonna get even 1/2 the money I put into the thing back. I'd be considering somewhere around $12k for mine if anyone is even willing to buy it for that price (given all the mods I've done to it, body work, etc. etc.). But I've seen a lot of RUclips trends start to pick up on the RX8 as of recent. I mean, hey, even Gears and Gasoline are now doing an RX8 series, and believe it or not, they decided to stick to the Renesis engine! I feel like for myself, I've put so much money into it, it's my life-long project car. It has served me faithfully as a daily for quite a few years now, with the occasional breakdowns and eventual engine blowing up. But the biggest issue with the RX8 I want to say is age, and the fact that it's a "relatively" cheap Japanese sports car. Rust is the biggest enemy, really...

  • @trackstarflash
    @trackstarflash 7 месяцев назад +2

    I Think you hit the nail on the head here. Many Many RX8s are in poor condition because of people not knowing what they were getting into, not understanding rotary engines and because of that mistreated the car thinking it was like piston engine vehicles. Which ultimately brought the early engine deaths and poor engine wear on low mileage RX8s. And this understanding of potential engine issues has put a permanent stain on RX8s at least in the USA, where the used value is significantly less than you'd think.
    But you're absolutely right, that if you learn about the car, maintain the car and treat it right, you'll have a great machine!

    If well maintained and kept oem, preferably those with the manual transmission, prices are not cheap. But for those that were neglected, abused and not maintained properly, of course the prices would be cheap. I still have my 2005 Mazda RX8 GT manual which is still maintained by a Mazda dealership and service center here in Florida which provides excellent service and keeps the car running in excellent condition. The only upgrades done to it is an updated DVD navigation/stereo with a back up camera and a K&N air filter replacing the stock one. Keeping the mechanical components all OEM makes it more reliable. Setting aside extra money regularly, saved from not having to make huge car payments from how new cars are priced nowadays also helps for repair costs in the future.

    I own an RX8 and have always had a soft spot for Rotors, but I'd say another big reason it just wasn't as desirable is the engine/power it had from factory.
    As a successor to RX7, it just wasn't a successor in that department, I know the reasons why they chose the Renesis, but having no turbo engine was a major downgrade.
    I can only imagine how much of a classic the RX8 would have been with the handling it has now and at least a single turbo setup 13B from factory.

    I don't know what's happening in your country, but here in Cyprus there are people who are "begging" to buy RX-8's and as far as I can tell from my experience, most people who have their RX-8's (including myself!) don't want to sell their RX-8's at all. Which results to other people looking and looking. Furthermore, I don't know what consists a "low price" in your country, but here, the cheapest RX-8's in Facebook market are between 2.500 - 3.500 euros. And there are others with a price between 6.000 - 6.500 euros. And some others went to 7.000 - 8.500 euros. Also, most RX-8's I see around here, seem to be well taken cared of.

    Going over two years strong on my '04 RX8. I've got the original motor with about 110k miles on it and have had 0 issues, probably (definitely) cause I and the previous owner didn't treat it like trash. These cars last if you treat them right. Always premix, get a sohm adapter going, let her warm up fully, and give her the beans often. If you treat the car right, the car will treat you right. 🔥

    Yeah... not in Italy. Anything that still has a straight frame and a semi-running engine will cost you at least 5k €. Decent ones ranges from about 10k to 12k €, the good ones ranges from around 15K€ up to over 20K€. And I'm talking about the first gen here, not the R3! It's pure madness, especially considering that before the pandemic a 2004 RX-8 worth pretty much its weight in potatoes.

    I would add that people are afraid to take a rotary engine to a mechanic because there aren't many rotary mechanics left and the few good ones who remain are high price and cater to RX7s and other collectable rotary engine vehicles.

Did 24,000 miles in 16 years! YES 24,000 miles. He even had it pressure washed at around 4000 miles and had it undersealed too to preserve all the underside. BEST CAR I'VE EVER DRIVEN - FACT!

    Bad rep... low mpg and high road tax in the UK. To be honest, I wouldn't daily an RX8 if I needed to commute. It's just getting too old and that means unreliability. The car is on the cusp of becoming a collectors car, as the numbers on the road have reduced so much, and RX7's are so insanely priced. You get a slice of the rotary experience for a very small investment. And like any car of its age, you need to take care of it.

Soon the market will clear up... And as you said. Every one that needs an rx8 will pay for a car in good condition like I did 😊... 38.000 klm compression 8.1 at a price of 9000k..
