I would like to hear from other rx 8 owners about the power steering working & the not working. I read that it is caused from the coolant recovery tank overflow tube allows anti freeze to run down its side & when anti freeze gets on the wire loom harness plugs it causes a malfunction in the power steering system. Is there any known fix for this situation?
I would never recommend raving to 9k+ regularly. Reving to 3k for 3seconds before shutdown solved this issue prevents flooding issues. I make a point to hit 6k every time I drive and never get carbon buildup. I never once ran into any of the listed issues or any of the most popular ones. Knowing how to maintain your car through basic practices, these things (series II anyways) run forever.
I owned a 2005 rx8 6 speed manual. I loved that car, for the 2 years I had it. Not many chicks can drive 6 speeds. I could, and owned it proudly. I now have 350z convertible. It's automatic, but still a blast to drive.

Arm rest...lol i just don't lean on it, or let anyone else. I love that car, but its major problem is the drivers for the most part. Keep up the good work mate.
I remember a (relatively) hot day in Las Vegas when my visor hinge completely melted to liquid. Dealership replaced those, but for the condensation/water in taillights, I simply drilled a small, barely perceptible hole in the lower portion of each covering and it did the trick (drained and allowed airflow to defog).
Nice! when i bought the rx8, it had super foggy tail lights. I replaced them with another pair that had a better gasket, and never had an issues since :)
Your videos are great. First experience with a rotary engine and I'm having one hell of a time. Your videos are helping but still haven't got it to fire.
I had the gasket problems, weak starter motor, sensor lights issues, radio broke, engine needed a rebuild and suspension. The day i sold my RX8 it felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders
Mitch V bro never ever buy a Mazda. No matter what year the Mazda is stay away from it. They are garbage. Their engines and transmissions are garbage. You will lose lots of money for a crappy car.
This is a proper car enthusiasts car so having a few problems along the way is no different from any other car really. Especially since you can pick a decent 2nd gen up for 6 to 10 thousand cdn I'd say its a bargain. Definitely on my list of summer cars to eventually own... just not this summer.
Owned an RX-8 for 2 years. Loved every minute of driving it despite the problems. I then had 7 months of riding a 125cc Yamaha MT-125, until I crashed. A month later I decided to sell the bike, then I called a local dealership asking if they had a GT86 in, they shot me down on the spot, then invited me to come down as they had something better to offer. I arrived at the dealership and I was introduced to a Laguna blue Facelift AP1 2007 S2000, they took me out and let me drive her. From the moment the car started and the low growl pouring out of the Skunk2 Megapower exhaust until parking her outside my house tonight and tomorrow and beyond, I will forever be in love with this car. Note, I test drove a GT86 a few months ago and I was very disappointed and happy at the same time, because I got introduced to the S2k first.
Now that's destiny in action right there man. i'm super happy you got the s2k, it's an amating car :) I can relate, i drove the Gt86 3 times ( at work in the hotel), and sadly, it's not... engaging enough... i mean, idk just lacks the spark :/
I bought an RX8 with an idling issue. I parked it, took the battery off and on, then tried to get the ECM to learn to idle. I got a check engine light and turns out the MAF sensor was faulty. Now it drives perfect.
Nice video. Number 11: Right airbag cover cracks with the year if the car is exposed in high temperatures like we have here in Greece. Replacement cost 450 euros (new) or 250 euros (used). Fix cost about 100 euros.
ger kav damn... there were ambitious when creating this car, but had rubbish execution of it. One one hand, im glad I didint buy it new, cause it was not worth the price
I have bought the car in 2006, new for 28.000 euros. As of today my odo has more than 160.000 km (70% in open road conditions) with no mechanical problems at all. I haven't ever use premix solutions. I keep straight to factory's settings and maintenance. It's a superb car and when the time comes for rebuild the engine it would be around 2.500 euros, so I can enjoy it for many years more. It's true that they use some bad quality plastics, but it's ok....we didn't buy a Mercedes. Have safe roads my friend.
I had a brand new 2004 RX8 and it handled and rode well. The Bose HiFi was dreadful and really muffled with no treble. Otherwise, the car was generally okay other than high oil consumption (which I knew would be an issue) and the engine flooding badly if you started and stopped the engine before it had warmed up. On one occasion it took the Mazda rescue people 45 minutes of cranking to get the engine to splutter into life. I think RX8s were seen as a novelty in 2004 but I, like most owners, tired of its temperamental and “delicate feeling” nature so went back to the usual Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volvo default choice.
The biggest problems with rotary cars are people not knowing how to properly maintain them.. you have to know what your getting into, there not normal automobiles
I worked at Mazda for 8 years, and was there, when these cars came out. We had one towed at least weekly, due to them being flooded. Even after owners were advised to rev engine before shutdown. We had to remove spark plugs to deflood them. At the cost of these cars new, who wants to worry about that. Also, we had to rebuild many rotary engines, typically around the 15 to 20k mileage range, to the tune of 13 grand. Most, at the time were under warranty, but still, a big headache, for a new car owner. Most people, either traded, or sold them, after realizing how troubled they were. Would never buy one of these cars, especially used.
@@joeberetti4763 Most of them were rebuilt under warranty. Many times even if the car was slightly out of warranty. Our district manager was great at doing everything he could to make the customers as happy as they be considering. Its just, that's what it would have retailed if it was customer pay. Sure you could find cheaper labor, but not at a dealership.
I like your videos. One other problem that I think a lot of people have is the radiator fluid light that come on and stays on. Not a horrible problem, but one i wouldn't mind fixing on mine.
MrPendulum999 hmmm, never had that issue, but I guess it fits in the rx8 basket of ending problems. Thanks for sharing man, I hope you've found at least how to fix it ?
I think it is something to do with the reservoir, something sticking and making the sensor read that it is empty. Its not a big deal (i just check the reservoir), just wondered how common it was. I like your videos a lot and will keep watching for new ones.
Ooh, well not as common as the ones mentioned in the video ;) Good luck with it man, hope you get it solved easily and quickly. Thanks, i really appreciate it :D
i tried for a good while .. almost 1 year to buy one..and i am soooo happy i didn't buy one.. i bought a used 350z and i am a happy camper.. those nissan 350z are easy to repair, are tough as nails and are fun as heck
I've owned 3 RX 8's 2 of which were 40th Anniversary models. Great cars and I never had problems with any of mine. The main problem with the RX 8 is the numbskulls that own them! My biggest complaint is the poor fuel consumption. Anyone that floods their RX 8 is just being careless. Compression loss is mostly due to people not using the right oil or not changing it or topping up often enough.
Pete Harris : I’m thinking of swapping the Wife’s Jaguar XJ for a 231RX8. Is this going to be a really bad idea Pete? She only works 5.5 miles away from home, so I’m worried about carbon build-up on the rotar tips with such a short journey.
Never use seafoam! It's a common misconception that that smoke coming out of your exhaust is your carbon emissions being burnt away But in reality there's oil in seafoam and that's what you're burning. I watched a guy do it to a brand new car that only had 20 miles on it and it had smoke coming out that exhaust hype even though it had no carbon buildup.
I had a 2004 RX8 Grand Touring model back in the day. Immediately, I ditched the stock cat/mid pipe with one from Rotary Performance out of Dallas. A Greddy catback replaced the heavy stocker.
Well done, i'm also happy i just removed the cat. I have so much better idling, and not to mention the sound :P I'm still getting used to the stench tho...
I believe you, i saw a documentary in youtube about i think Singapore, where everything costs 200% more than it the rest of the world. I would go crazy :/
Yeah, but there's no Emission test in Indonesia... You can just change it with a straight pipe and labour is so cheap there... You can probably get someone to weld a straight pipe for about $20
There's an auto rx8 2011 where I live do these tend of have transmission issues due to heat and do they clean out ok due to them being restricted to 5k rpn
Hi! I’ve just binged a few of ur videos and I really like it. it’s really helpful as I’m considering buying one. It seems like u live in Czechia with the highway sticker on ur windshield. How much roundabout do you pay in insurance for ur rx8 just so I can have some vague idea of what to expect? And also isn’t a decat going to make you fail emissions?
Which basically created a vicious cycle. Price goes up to cover production costs at lower sales numbers, people refuse to buy. People refuse to buy, so sales numbers drop even further. That being said, the 3rd-gen RX-7 was expensive for its market even at launch.
+doktorbimmer Well, I wouldn't say Mazda completely abandoned the design. They're not producing any rotary engines at the moment, but their R&D team has been working on trying to improve the reliability and efficiency of the design. On a side note, are you familiar with "Atkinson Cycle" engines? Apparently an Atkinson Rotary could fix a majority of rotary engine issues.
Driven by Madness, when I drive my Rx-8 05 to work everyday on the highway I hear badumump, badumump, badumpump. Before and after I had my suspension bushings and such replaced. Still there. Tires fairly new. Balanced Suspension. Also the shocks are still good. Idk its driving me crazy. Any ideas? No play in the wheels. I think its something in the front suspension. But Idk.
Can we get information about high mileage 2008 never used synthetic gets an oil change and full synthetic the car went bad fast and how it effects a catalytic converter!?
great vid! useful info, not for me tough... I got cought out by the rain doing 10kph below the speelimit 😭 suddenly massive oversteer and there came the tree, I knew my rear shocks were very bad and was saving for new ones... might have someting to do with it, maybe worth a check on your car?
Ohhh boy :/ I hope you're ok... So far the only thing that i notice is that the rear is maybe a bit lower than standard, and the rear shocks make a strange noise when i go trough tall speed bumps. I'm also saving to buy coilovers, so hopefully they'll last until then. But i'll give them another look, just to be safe :)
Driven by madness yes i was pretty frustrated too, I'm fine however. Thanks, just some smaller balls now 😉 this was the exact same issue i had, mine didn't make it till the coilovers unfortunatly... now looking for an mg zt v6, still sweet driving, sounding, looking etc, but a bit more forgiving and a very unique car ass well, might own an rx-8 again one day though... but not for now
Driven by madness that's because it was developed mostly during bmw ownership 😂 only the variable intake system (like the one on the laferrari) keeps breaking... well you can't love a car if they don't have their quirks right? You can know it with the rx-8 😂
Awesome video buddy! Liked, Subbed and added to my favourites :) I am looking at buying a series 2 RX-8 later this year and I've heard so many people complaining about the rotary engine (the lubrication issue being the reason behind going for a series 2) but unless you go onto RX-8 forums there's not many places that give you information to help you with the issues along with video links on how to actually do it yourself. People are very quick to complain these days but they're not so quick at looking into solutions to the problems they might face, thank you for your help.
I agree 1000% with you, there are so many people talking bad about the rx8, but no one actualy explains why it happens and how to fix it, because it isn't hard at all to do. And that's the goal of my channel, to familiarise the potential owners with the car, so that they understand it, and know how to work on it by themselves :) Cheers!
Driven by madness thank you buddy :) I have noticed that a lot of people are saying that if I'm looking at buying one, that I should check if it's had a compression test, although I know this, is there anything that I should be looking for on the results of the test?
My 04 GT RX8 had a misfire, tried everything to fix it, took it to Mazda for the control arms and fuel line recall, thank the lord because it was my fuel pump and I saved a lot of money, dodged a huge bullet lol
Inown a mazda rx8 2005 and it never gave me any problems at all like hard to start or etc... the problem is not the car its the owners... much of the rx8 owners are doing crazy shits customizing the car.
Is it worth getting aftermarket apex seals to replace the OEM ones, along with that premixing each tank of fuel and keeping the revs high?? Id love to own one, but my friends say it will blow up constantly
I’m being told my Rx8 has a gasket leak but also misfiring on two cylinders white smoke does come out my exhaust I went to drive the car she was running fine until I started driving and went into 2nd gear and she stalled out now she won’t start any suggestions?
Just to note, headlight and tailight condensation is a common thing among cars in that era - my mother's Lexus RX330 has that issue too. I don't even know why people hold it against the RX-8 specifically. An easy fix for this issue on all cars is to add a drain hole to the light buckets.
S2 Rx8s are all rx8s from 2008- to 2012. Some things were already fixed in the 2006 and 2007 S1 rx8, but the big difference in reliability is in the S2 :)
Look at the front bumper and headlights. You can't miss the difference. My rx8 is a S1 and here is a photo of a S2 Rx8: images.thecarconnection.com/med/2009-mazda-rx-8-r3_100189753_m.jpg
every RX owner can't wait to " port them, or modify them , or boost the turbo , add a 3rd rotor ... just leave the car alone as it was meant to be and maintain it as it was meant to be...but actually 9 or the 10 problems are ...1 thru 9 ... its a rotary...nuff said...
Recently bought a 2004 RX8 29,000 miles, Automatic looking to upgrade. I clicked on the USA link and it says link cant be found. Is there another link to order one?
Well that explains why they are so cheap to buy (used) both interior and exterior look phenomenal and it's got plenty of power to it.Such a shame i was thinking of getting one as my first car.Can anyone give me a suggestion for my first car btw my budget is 6.000€ but i would like a car that's kinda sporty and fun to drive.
It's because people treat them like a piston engine... it needs to be warmed up before you drive and not overheated when you drive... like any rotary...
I'm planning on buying myself a manual transmission rx8 are there any tips or advice to give me about it? This video was helpful already but I wanna make sure ima have a fully functional car haha
Question: I want to buy a Mazda rx8 05. The sensor for the transmission needs replacing and it also needs a unflood done. He’s asking for 1200$. Is it worth buying?
Sometimes an unflood can be achieved by pushing the accelerator to the floor and cranking the engine. This stops any fuel injection and hopefully the rotors will sweep the excess fuel out. The mazda instructional video might be on RUclips but you can Google it. No idea about the sensor though.
This guy is hands down the most useful man on RUclips. First of all, he doesn't tell you the problem without explaining it and giving a solution. Second of all, he gives you sources, links to tutorials and methods to fix the problem. Third of all, his videos are detailed. Keep up the good work!
lol, a solution to the rx8 motor, lets hear it lol?
the only thing that works is an rx7 one.
deadprivacy he never said there was going to be a solution for the rx8 engine. Rotary engines are just unreliable from the start, and there’s really nothing you can do to fix it.
Too many problems, but, i cannot hate this car

Driven by madness You know how engaging it is by valeting it?
Glad you didnt get that POS gt86. Most overrated car
Good job. I just had an 8 And these are really good tips.
Thanks man! I'm glad you liked it :)
oh boi I sure can name 10 reasons why
Good video ive been thinking of the best project for canyon runs and this is definetly a good candidate Thanks Mate
Awesome man, thanks! .I would love to take my rx8 on a canyon run. i had it stuck in my head sine Need for speed Carbon.
I bought an RX8 with an idling issue. I parked it, took the battery off and on, then tried to get the ECM to learn to idle. I got a check engine light and turns out the MAF sensor was faulty. Now it drives perfect.
thanks I have a customer that will like these tips. good video
Hus Teran Awesome, thank you very much! 😊
Nice video.
Number 11:
Right airbag cover cracks with the year if the car is exposed in high temperatures like we have here in Greece.
Have safe roads my friend.
doktorbimmer I bought it new.
doktorbimmer why?
Don't try to be a wise guy.
Your videos are awesome just got a rx8 2005 hope I can review your videos and make sure nothing's wrong with it 😋
Awesome! :D I'm really happy to hear that! Don't worry, tons of videos are coming up :D
El Jefe How’s the rx8 going ?
Great video man!!
Jimmy Tran thanks bro! 😄
Amazing video and Amazing car love rotaries apart from all the problems
How about the "cupwarmer" problem? How to overcome that heat from the catalytic converter? I need to put a cold water bottle on the cupholder.
*low compression and apex seals fell in love*
The biggest problems with rotary cars are people not knowing how to properly maintain them.. you have to know what your getting into, there not normal automobiles
I want to buy one to play with until it explodes, how should I take care of it properly? What are the problems?
Yikes! That's about as good as deer mouse hantavirus! That makes me want a 6-cylinder engine instead. :(
Sorry, I smell bullshit! Nothing wtong with these cars if you look after them.
13k for a rebuild when a good rotary shop would do it for 5k. I know dealers charge more but that is pure price gouging.
Good vid man
Thanks man! :)
Is that a fucking 1:12 RedSuns sticker from Initial-D? o I fucking love you man now you have a like and a sub.
You bet it is :D Thank you so much man!
You should buy a rx7 fc to put that sticker that you have on your window😉
Good Video!
really want rx-8, thanks for the clear up info
:)
i tried for a good while .. almost 1 year to buy one..and i am soooo happy i didn't buy one..
i bought a used 350z and i am a happy camper.. those nissan 350z are easy to repair, are tough as nails and are fun as heck
Does it run good the 350z?
350z good cars insurance is horrible tho but I mean that’s every performance car
I have so much better idling, and not to mention the sound :P I'm still getting used to the stench tho...
lol here in Indonesia the cat will cost around $5000. No joke. Mine had gone bad so I just replace it with a midpipe.
I believe you, i saw a documentary in youtube about i think Singapore, where everything costs 200% more than it the rest of the world. I would go crazy :/
Driven by madness in Bangladesh it cost 300% and if the car is above 5000cc then you have to pay 863% duty
Run away man, run away far from that horrible polace :/
Yeah, but there's no Emission test in Indonesia... You can just change it with a straight pipe and labour is so cheap there... You can probably get someone to weld a straight pipe for about $20
Calvin Laudrensio But the roads in Indonesia wreck your car....
Great vid
This guys cool, ill subscribe.
Thanks man :)
RedSuns, well played m8
Thank you Sensei :)
You forgot to mention the clutch pedal the cracks on the joints over time. Either replace it or reinforce it by welding it.
The obvious solution is to drop off these piles of junk at the scrap yard and find a better car to buy!
Thank you for this video. :-)
It's not an RX7 that's the problem.
+doktorbimmer
And people stopped buying RX-7s because the FD was priced out of its market. There were Ferraris that were cheaper.
Which basically created a vicious cycle. Price goes up to cover production costs at lower sales numbers, people refuse to buy. People refuse to buy, so sales numbers drop even further.
That being said, the 3rd-gen RX-7 was expensive for its market even at launch.
+doktorbimmer
Well, I wouldn't say Mazda completely abandoned the design. They're not producing any rotary engines at the moment, but their R&D team has been working on trying to improve the reliability and efficiency of the design.
On a side note, are you familiar with "Atkinson Cycle" engines? Apparently an Atkinson Rotary could fix a majority of rotary engine issues.
Losing against nsx gtr 3000gt supra which are far more reliable
Jordan Rainey the best rx7 is the fc then rx8 then fd then fb rx7

Driven by Madness, when I drive my Rx-8 05 to work everyday on the highway I hear badumump, badumump, badumpump. Before and after I had my suspension bushings and such replaced. Still there. Tires fairly new. Balanced Suspension. Also the shocks are still good. Idk its driving me crazy. Any ideas? No play in the wheels. I think its something in the front suspension. But Idk.
Can we get information about high mileage 2008 never used synthetic gets an oil change and full synthetic the car went bad fast and how it effects a catalytic converter!?
You forgot about that spring in the door that breaks and makes it impossible to unlock.
great vid! useful info, not for me tough...
Thanks, just some smaller balls now 😉 this was the exact same issue i had, mine didn't make it till the coilovers unfortunatly... now looking for an mg zt v6, still sweet driving, sounding, looking etc, but a bit more forgiving and a very unique car ass well, might own an rx-8 again one day though... but not for now
Uuuu nice :D I saw this sedan on top gear 2 days ago. Somehow, MG made a good car :P
11. Electric power steering failure. Been having this problem on both my RX8’s and it’s very difficult to diagnose and fix properly.
Replace steering gear, module i internal to the steering racka nd has likely developed an internal fault. You'll need a dealer to program it after
"RedSuns"
I noticed that too lol
Keisuke says: I'M THE NO.2 DRIVER OF THE AKAGI RED SUNS!
Akina speedsters for life
Project.D is better and Keisuke is 3rd fastest there
@@raiyanjoys9973 tbh keisuke after final stage probably would beat takumi
My 04 GT RX8 had a misfire, tried everything to fix it, took it to Mazda for the control arms and fuel line recall, thank the lord because it was my fuel pump and I saved a lot of money, dodged a huge bullet lol
Damn son, you're one lucky guy :P
Inown a mazda rx8 2005 and it never gave me any problems at all like hard to start or etc... the problem is not the car its the owners... much of the rx8 owners are doing crazy shits customizing the car.
wow you are slovenian? i'm going to slovenia next week! :D
Yup :) Awesome man, lots of warm sunny days ahead of you! :D
the good old rotary problems, is there any totaly bug fixed rotary engine?
I Bought a Gen 1 RX8 with fucked Apex seals on purpuose, to rebuild it, so i wonder, is there an after market option, for the third injector?
Is it worth getting aftermarket apex seals to replace the OEM ones, along with that premixing each tank of fuel and keeping the revs high??
Id love to own one, but my friends say it will blow up constantly
I like the model and the car is cheap around 2.5k in holland. But i so far as i now after 100k the engines mostly die. But still maybe i buy one.
cool video, thx!
My pleasure :)
I've had the sunvisor and starter problem and am currently experiencing a likely flooding issue with my Rx8 atm..
Another dead Renesis engine, sell that pile junk as soon as you can before its too late.
I’m being told my Rx8 has a gasket leak but also misfiring on two cylinders white smoke does come out my exhaust I went to drive the car she was running fine until I started driving and went into 2nd gear and she stalled out now she won’t start any suggestions?
I love the startup of the Mazda rx8 it sound amazing
Yeah but the engine and the rest of car is just garbage.
@@sandervanderkammen9230 I said was I like the startup but yea that’s true
Surprised he didn't mention the dashboard cracking around the airbag.
Just to note, headlight and tailight condensation is a common thing among cars in that era - my mother's Lexus RX330 has that issue too. I don't even know why people hold it against the RX-8 specifically.
An easy fix for this issue on all cars is to add a drain hole to the light buckets.
This guy is an initial D fan, he placed a RedSuns' logo on his rx8
body control module error . ABS error are the hardest things to repair and diagnose in mazda . Mechnical errors are easy to fix .
Excellent Video!
But i have a question:
What is the Rx8 Series 1 and what is Series 2 ?
Do you mean with Series 2 the Facelift Modell R3?
S2 Rx8s are all rx8s from 2008- to 2012. Some things were already fixed in the 2006 and 2007 S1 rx8, but the big difference in reliability is in the S2 :)
Driven by madness - Ahhh okay 👌🏻 but three any hints how i can recognize an s2 without the productionyear?
Look at the front bumper and headlights. You can't miss the difference. My rx8 is a S1 and here is a photo of a S2 Rx8: images.thecarconnection.com/med/2009-mazda-rx-8-r3_100189753_m.jpg
Driven by madness - Nice 👍🏻 thanks. That is the R3 Facelift :)
Yup :)

every RX owner can't wait to " port them, or modify them , or boost the turbo , add a 3rd rotor ... just leave the car alone as it was meant to be and maintain it as it was meant to be...but actually 9 or the 10 problems are ...1 thru 9 ... its a rotary...nuff said...
I agree with you
Thank you, great video. Are you in Croatia?
You're welcome :) Nope, Slovenia
I see the red sums sticker! That’s wassup!
I avoided all of this shit by buying a Lada 1600.
Next level thinking man, i like it :)

Excellent video I'm in the process of debating a trade I have s 2006 vw passat 2.0 turbo and the opportunity has come up for an even trade any input?
zdravo a ga mrbit trenutno prodajaš na avtonetu? drgače zelo lep avto
No idea about the sensor though.
really nice the red suns sticker
Love the Red Suns sticker! :D
in my opinion cleaning engine carbon buildup by driving it hard is the best compared to seafoam
