Ben Barnes as The Darkling was absolutely amazing. He is, in the books, as well as in the show, the most interesting character from this universe. To see it on screen perfectly portrayed was a delight.
I do hope the show gets renewed for a season 2 because Netflix really did a great job at bringing it to life.

I read the books, and generally the book version is better than live action. But this particularly is completely opposite. Ben Barnes completely portrays the complexity of his character, Aleksandr suffered so very much which made him do anything and everything to protect his country, his people. His ancient wisdom and passion is difficult for people to understand who hasn't seen the world the way he has.
Kudos to Ben, to bring forth so many layers in so little scenes.
Exactly, this is why I like aleksander as a character so much, he has so much depth and complexity. Ben barnes portrayed him wonderfully

@@michaelaong1174 So basically, centuries ago in a unified Ravka, King Anastas hired Aleksander Morozova (the Darkling) as his military advisor. After winning several wars for the King (such as the Border Wars against Fjerda and Shu Han), the King feared Aleksander's magic and his growing power, and was paranoid about Aleksander launching a coup to seize control over Ravka. So, King Anastas set a bounty on Aleksander, and paid anyone that would bring him in dead or alive. In addition, the King issued an order to the Ravkan Army to hunt down and capture or kill all known Grisha in Ravka. After feeling deeply betrayed and broken after losing so many fellow Grisha to the King, including his partner, Luda, Aleksander devises a plan to make his own army; an army of Grisha, in order to fight back and take back their rights. However, Aleksander also wants to *create* an army that can do his bidding completely, so he dives into the dark web of magic that is merzost; the power of creation and abominations. After a brief confrontation with the King's army, Aleksander demonstrates his new power in merzost and unleashes torrents of shadows, thus creating the Shadow Fold. Centuries later (around 400 years) Alina Starkov's gift is revealed: the power of light. Alina becoming the Sun Summoner had been the only beacon of hope for Aleksander in hundreds of years, so he sort of gets obsessed with Alina and her power, and seeks to take advantage of her power to finish what he had started all those centuries ago. Aleksander goes from a powerful Grisha and overall brilliant person to a power-hungry monster who manipulates Alina in order to seize her power of the sun in order to control the Shadow Fold and expand it to consume any land he wants to destroy it, and ultimately, finally create his own, controlled army with merzost. @@michaelaong1174 Girl, what can tell you go read the book for yourself that's what I did cause believe what people told you here cause they have their own opinion about the Darkling
(Since we're all talking about 'unpopular opinons' here's one): Regardless of whether Aleksander is broken, has a history, has soft spots or not, the decisions he chose are strategical. He knew that West Ravka would kill them on the spot, he understood how the Fold could be used to his advantage. Therefore, even if he were morally evil and inhumane, you cannot deny the fact that he makes a strong and powerful leader. His motives aren't that complicated to understand. It doesn't take some sort of sad pitiful backstory to explain his choices.
Yes I agree with everything you say, he is a competent leader, general and strategist. It's sad for me that most people don't seem to see it, to understand the reasoning behind his actions and intentions, regardless if they are morally ethic or not, they are effective.

Man the Darkling and the rest of the Grisha could have been an amazing asset to kingdoms. One of the best "villains" I've read about and watched in a while. If you can even call him a villain, just a man who wanted his people safe and to be left alone, instead they kept pushing him, just because they feared his power.
I so completely agree! I wouldn't call him a villain. All of his choices were made to protect his people with the information and resources he had. It makes everything the "good guys" do SOOOOOO frustrating, especially in season 2.
I would be like " okay who are we killing now" the second I learned who he is. I am not a strong woman.

He's a Villain but why cast Ben & Netflix dropping these threads?....its probably why many want to see more Darklina:
1. Alina's blue scarf blew towards the Darkling EP1 (hope he has it !)
2. They form a unique light bubble when the Darkling is visibly upset EP4
3. Their makeout foreshadow have more chemistry on the wall than Malina EP5🤣
4. Actual war room makeout session hotter than the book!🔥 EP5
5. The Darkling killed the Fjerdan/Conductor/Zlatan EP 1/6/8 to protect Alina (Kaz luckily escaped Ep6!)

Aleksandar isnt evil at all, he made the right decision by expanding the shadow cause on the other side they were about to kill everyone including the sun summoner but maybe shadow is the only thing protecting both borders.

Ben Barnes is showing every bit of humanity that you don't see in the books for a villain. It’s kind of heartbreaking as he has an 'agenda' to save Grisha and a powerlust. 100's of years of pain has made the soft Aleksander disappear and then there are those special moments when Alina brings him back (his balance). Like when he was explaining the Ravka threats and got enveloped in emotional darkness in episode4 and Alina touched him/cancelled out the darkness and they were engulfed in a light bubble. She mirrored what he had said in an earlier episode without even realising it - 'You are not alone!' (For immortals thats a bid deal!). God he looked so relieved like he wanted to cry from so many years of pain -being close to someone finally who can be by his side. 🖤
Another example in the 'make me your villain' argument where Alina firmly stood her ground but made it clear in a very queen-like stance how they could have had a future together. She placed his hand on her chest as a reminder and you could see a glimpse of the old Aleksander reignite with her touch and the sadness and regret appear in the Darklings eyes.🖤 Alina is his equal and he has been in love with her all along. But like most fantasy dramas its PROBLEMATIC. lol!

Holy sh*t this video was amazing. The whole progression of the story telling. I love how u used his back shot when they were talking about the "black heretic" then revealed his face after Baghra said "Aleksander IS the Black Heretic." We knew who he was, yes, but it made it so much better. And the music! It was wonderful. The voiceover over other shots to parallel it. *chefs kiss* AMAZING! One of my favourite edits for sure.

One of my favorite adaptations from the books was that we got to see the Darling's past. It really added a part of his character that I can't hate. I will never condone his actions but knowing he was once human gives so much more to who he is now and just how far he has gone away from who he was.

I totally love Darkling and felt all of his pain, his rage and would justify any action he would do (probably thanks to his portrayal as handsome dark man). My opinion is based on the show alone, since I didn't read the books yet.
Although I have a feeling that books often do not go to deep into villains and show us mainly protagonist's perspective, so it may be harder to build a connection with a character.
But, what I've got from Darkling's portrayal in the show.
He was a boy, protected by his mother, who was a powerfull grisha and even burned villages for him. Then he turned out to be a powerfull grisha himself, much more advanced in using small science than the rest of his people. He was used by kingdom and in the wars he fought he lost his lowed ones. How much loss and betrayal a man can stand? After he was betrayed and his loved one died, he only wanted to protect his people. I've got a feeling that when Aleksander started to show the power, it made his mother afraid of him, she stopped trusting him. And all he wanted at that point was to save grishas. And the only way he found, being in this all alone, was to use the merzost. He created the fold and slowly started loosing himself. The fear he awoke look to work, therefore Darkling used it to still protect grishas. Grishas were feared thanks to him, valuable for the king, but still used by the kingdom and not really respected. Darkling was right about taking the kingdom over, sometimes there is no other way. This show perfectly (at least in the 2 seasons) shows, that world is no fairy tail, where the good and love always wins. It's a dark place, where evil decisions need to be made sometimes. Where the ones with power run the countries. Alekasnder took it on himself. I believe, that when he found out about Alina, he truly hoped she could save him. But being betrayed over the years, even by his own mother, he couldn't trust her. He chose the evil path, I believe he knew no better. And he was right about it. Here's comes the true villain of the story, in my opinion, Darkling's mother. When Alina started to have some feelings to Aleksander and he might have some for her, Baghra took her away from him (in the meantime even having her trusted grishas, working behind her son's back). Then Alina tried to use seduction on him and I believe he really hoped she may still have feelings for him- yet she tried to destroy him. Betrayed once again. Final betrayal, when his mother, trying to save Alina, killed herself and cut his hand off. While he was truly broken loosing her, she showed no such feelings towards him (not to mention she didn't feel regret when she killed her sister and I dare to say she didn't feel it when she came back to her grave). By the end, left all alone, broken, betrayed over and over again, when he fought his final battle with Alina, he was in ave of her powers and he was ready to once again became a villain. He protected her and warned her that there's a price to be paid for such great power.
Once again, this is based purely on the show and not the books. I'm currently reading them (and already don't like first-person narrative, since I don't like Alina), so I may change my opinion.
I see no Dislikes and it should stay that way because this is a masterpiece.

i just know that the writers will raise our expectations about alina and darklings relationship and then end it like nothing happened and there was no chemistry between them, i beg u, dont ever do it, dont ruin the ship like the way vampire diaries did with klaroline, i cant take it anymore

Alexsander is not always a villain, he is a victim twisted by an evil used by both humans for slaughtering his own kind and the evil he accepted it to overcome him with every way for searching for knowledge and power enough to save them from extinction. I sympathize all about him; the loss of his Heartrender, his solitude, his fear, his hatred, his suffering, all of it. I can only wish characters like himself finds a way for a better life, so they could finally live peacefully. I cannot bear a thought of someone who lives for so long who is cursed with all such negativity because of whom they had lost and how many continued to be slaughtered, kidnapped and tortured. I believe compassion saves lives, no matter how trapped we either of us may feel or thought the part of ourselves dies with the people we adore so much. 😢💔

His "love" is twisted and toxic. You don't try to enslave people you love.
In all honesty, if I lived for 100s of years and watched all my people get slaughtered repeatedly, I'd be a tyrant too. It's torture to have to watch the people you love be born, grow up, get killed and repeat the cycle all over again. I can't really blame him for abandoning peaceful means if those peaceful means didn't work for centuries. And in the grand scheme of things, all people will come to pass, so he most likely doesn't care about a few casualties because they are inevitable. In hindsight, his cruelty makes sense. But then again I'm biased because...Ben Barnes 😍

Just finished season 2. I admit I had higher hopes for the direction they took Kirigan. He could have been more in control, but he sort of ended up just a sad child marching down a total collapse.

The first time I ever saw Ben was as Prince Caspian. It’s interesting to note how the Darkling is a dark reflection of Caspian, a omen of who he could have become without the aid of Aslan and the friends of Narnia.

THIS is why Darklina is so satisfying (and why it will happen): it's obvious that what drives Aleksander is bitterness, fear and loneliness. His love for Alina - once he has a quiet moment to reflect on what she said and what she means to him - will help him return to his more human self, opening the long road to forgiveness. I hope the show runners are aware that the redemption of the Black Heretic would be a much more satisfying arc than the age-old tropy dark-versus-light battle. Yawn.
He's such a sad dude tho, his mother doted on him and made him proud of himself, but when she found out what he's capable of got scared and gave up on him. Alina, which he catches feelings for and for a hundred years finally having potential of being his equal, left and despised him as well. In the end he is always alone. Having such great power scares people into leaving you, not bothering to understand or try to weigh your truths and reasons. So damn unfair when they antagonize you as well. People stick to whatever is comfortable, for whatever they think is safe and familiar of. Now it's Alina's choice if she wants to give herself the chance to see him, to truly see him, but dare she mind that all of Aleksander's actions, all his defenses and blows as a reply and result to these assumptions, would not be his fault at all.
