Rwanda is holding a week of commemorations to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, a period of around 100 days in which up to 1 million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu militias while powerful countries, including the United States, stood by and refused to stop the mass killings. Shortly after the genocide, Rwanda's President Paul Kagame took power and has since ruled Rwanda with an iron fist, leading a harsh crackdown on the press and opposition groups. We look back at the 1994 genocide and discuss the country's trajectory since then with two guests: Kenneth Roth, the former executive director of Human Rights Watch and now a visiting professor at Princeton, and Noël Zihabamwe, a survivor of the genocide whose parents were killed during the violence in 1994 and whose brothers were disappeared by the Kagame regime in 2019. Zihabamwe now lives in Australia and runs the African Australian Advocacy Center.

Many did, just as is happening in Gaza now. And just like with Gaza, the players who could have made a difference did not intervene because of the optics. The US did not want another Black Hawk Down scenario and did not want to be morally obliged to get involved in Bosnia, which a Rwanda intervention would have made difficult to avoid.
All the tone deaf comments here on how the US shouldn't meddle in other countries (certainly true) miss the point that Rwanda was the rare occasion when it would have been of immediate benefit.

Clinton and his US presidential companions remind me of Louis XIV of France. Before he died he admitted that he had instigated many wars. Very many people had died to fight for his pleasure and glory, in the end much of what had been gained in conquered land had been lost again.
We nowadays often don't understand, that this is exactly the expression of sovereignty! Louis XIV was an absolutist monarch and he could literally decide about the lives of his subjects. The US presidents are the very same! They decide by a telephone call, if the genocide in Gaza procedes or not. This is the very proof of being a SOVEREIGN!
This is the very thing that should have been overcome by the American revolution and the French revolution. Both did they fail. Oh boy, how did they fail.
The modern war criminals are highly revered, never taken to justice, which serves them anyway, and never made responsible for their individual 'learning experiences'.

I respectfully suggest having the Rwandan guest on again… I understand and appreciate the connection being drawn between ‘94 Rwanda and Gaza, but I felt an odd disconnect between the framing of the story vis a vis Roth and the Rwandan guest, who it seems to me was there to discuss issues of Rwanda itself on this 30th anniversary and not as an addendum to the present Gaza conflict, which kinda muddled the narrative IMO.

French Mercenaries trained the militias that carried out the Rwandan genocide. This was due to President Habyarimana's close relationship with Mitterand. The French government also purchased the machetes and many victims saw French soldiers at the killing barricades overseeing the killings. This is the truth that France refuses to admit.
