In the late 1950s and 1960s in the UK we could buy canned Bulgarian stuffed peppers. They were one of the cheapest canned products but very delicious. They disappeared from the shelves in the 1970s.
Readily available in the U.S. under the Zehr Gut brand name, choice of stuffed peppers, tomatoes or eggplant. Anywhere from $1.50-$2.50 or so per can. Very flavorful.
I have to say- gotta love the honesty of the woman with the tomatoes!! You asked which one is better out of 2 piles with different pricing- and she pointed at the cheaper option LOL Awesome video, even though it's a year old... I am looking into possibly moving to Varna this year (from Bansko) and I def loved this video !
Feta, literally translated from Greek means white cheese (Bulgarian) Because during communism we could not export it to the west we sell it to the Greeks, they change the name and sell it as their product. They never had real cheese but because of its great publicity in England, they now think of it as Greek.

Great videos - big fan of yours. Man, you need to be watchful with all these homemade Rakias. Very wisely you gave it away to the professionals 😆. BTW прясна or fresh means - run away as fast as you can its full of methanol. Some folks don't know how (or simply skip) to treat excessive methanol during the distillation. Best to be cautious and take as little of the substance as possible. Or test it by taking a small sample of the alcohol and light it on fire - if you see a yellow fire instead of a blue flame, the sample contains methanol. Justin, if you ever come to Bulgaria again, I recommend you to visit the Rhodope mountains. There you can find a lot of kind people, landmarks, beautiful nature and colorite culture. There are plenty of local delicious food and recepies you would enjoy I believe.

And those markets be sure 90%of the food there is really out of heavy chemicals it’s pure and tasty may be various in size and shape after cleaning it’s the most tasty thing to consume
I might be remembering this wrong, but do Bulgarians have Sharena salt with bread (dip the bread in the salt)? I think I remember having it when I was there, was delicious.
Hi Tom. Absolutely correct... That is exactly what it is! Often served before a meal to nibble on whilst waiting for the main course. I am impressed... you are well traveled 👍
To my surprise after a century and a half of nation building the Bulgarian cuisine remains dominated by Turkish food names. In fact there’s food in Bulgaria with Turkish names which people from Turkey would not be familiar with. For example, “Sızdırma”. A lot of food names ending with “ma” or “me” are Turkish including the better known “Pastrami” which comes from “Bastırma” (pressed) and “Shawarma” which comes from “Çevirme” (turned - alternate word for “Dömer”). “Kapama” (closed) “Bazlama”, Gözleme” and the one mentioned in the clip for the Russian “Palachinki”, “Katma” (added) are also Turkish names but Bulgarians seem to have confused that one with another Turkish food name for a kind of omelette. The correct name for what Bulgarians call “Katma” is “Akıtma” (spilled) as it is made by spilling the mix onto the pan. My mom used to make good “akıtmas” (акътма). “Kaçamak” is another breakfast item worth mentioning. And let us not forget the “Şkembe” and “Tarana” çorbas (soups).
if you want ,in the summer if you are still in Bulgaria , I'm gonna give you to try a real nice homemade it rakia , matured couple of years , destilated couple of times , produced by my father of law . You really gonna like it , you gonna forget to drink Gin and weskey ! :) You just need a big coup of Shopska salad 🥗 😅👌😎

We call it Slivova Rakia in Bulgaria. It's more popular in Balkan Mountains where they grow plums. In regions that there are a lot of vineyards Rakia is usually made from grapes. In northern Bulgaria at the Danube coast around Silistra they make apricot Rakia, maybe you have that in Romania too. In some regions typical home made Rakia is well over 50 degrees alcohol. Usually is little less than 50.

Hello my friend and thank you for watching. Let me correct you, I was across the street from Chataldzha not Chaika!!! Wrong neighbourhood. And Kolkhozen is the main market in Varna!!! Thank you for commenting mate👍
33:12 was kinda offensive actually… He said “Watermelon, not melon like you are”. In other words my fellow citizen called you stupid. It’s sad but most of the bulgarian people are like that. But now Imma teach you the perfect word that describes them. They are “прошляци- proshlyaci” plural. This means wasted, all day and night drunk people who judge others. Thank you for visiting my hometown. Wish you the best!
In fact, The Shopska salad is not a traditional Bulgarian recipe, but an author's product of the cousin of Balkantourist - the Bulgarian national tourist operator from the time of socialism. As you can see, its main ingredients - the tomatoes and the peppers are brought to Europe from South America in the Middle Ages. The same goes for the second most famous Bulgarian salad - The Ovcharska salad.
Are you suggesting that since tomatoes originated in America centuries ago any salads made from them subsequently cannot belong to other cultures? What is your IQ?
@@BalkanMode No. I am not suggesting that. But how traditional could a recipe be? Traditional means coming from your ancestors. Tomatoes are part of Europe's present culture, but they are not traditional. And, please, don"t question anyone's IQ here!

It is a shame, however I like the fact that things have not changed that much... Honestly, i dont think it is an economic factor but more of a cultural one.
Thank you for watching and commenting 👌👍
I decided to visit Varna after your movies 😂😂😂 Thanks!
That is fantastic... I hope you enjoy. Send me photos of your trip on Instagram
I m from Varna and i love my town and your video!
Thanks Justin another great video , your interaction with the locals is a lesson we should all embrace Unfortunately most of us lack your linguistic skills , no one more than me due to sheer bloody laziness on my part Keep the videos coming and stay safe
Hi Paul, thanks for watching and commenting on the video.
I love meeting new people and practice my language skills whenever I get an opportunity.
I have been asked by several viewers to make a few videos about learning languages and I think I might do a few.
I am hoping it will inspire some people to learn languages, Once they see how simple my method is.
All the best mate👌👍
@@J.E.E Dude you hit two of my favourite shops in one go (Pickle shop and Lavash).
@@J.E.E I want to know your method too. 😁
@@Lazy_But_Talented Hi Denitsa.

That lady was hilarious
Give me 2 leva then!
Perfect example of Bulgaria customer service :D
Hi my friend.
Yes that pretty much sums it up and I think it is great.
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍👌
@@J.E.E Thats what I love about that place, if you break the language barrier just a tiny bit, you quickly become 1 of the locals.
She was speaking to you as if you were born and raised in Bulgaria, not caring you are a foreigner at all
@@sleeper7271 I couldn't agree more!!! I am also a huge fan.
I can't believe you have been in our city and I didn't met you. Hope one day you came again!
The salt you bought at 13min its really with the ingredients of the original one, but it has very high % of salt. The other one you picked first was better, and closer to the original for sure.
And one tip, the real Sharena Sol contains Curcuma, see the ingredients before buy
Have a nice trip next time you visit my country! Nazdrave!
Nice video Justin , i live near the Kolhozen Pazar and it was a pleasure watching your video 👍
Believe me try them with sallad white cheese it’s a much softer almost creamy and take te seeds off a green Peppers and fill with the salad cheese put leaf basil ( fresh) . And those markets be sure 90%of the food there is really out of heavy chemicals it’s pure and tasty may be various in size and shape after cleaning it’s the most tasty thing to consume
At least that fruit is fresh n totally organic not like the bulldhit in supermarkets here.
😆😆😆
Agreed… thanks for watching my friend! 👍👌
Great video! I enjoyed it a lot.
Very well said about the cheese
Thank you for watching! 👍👌
страхотно видео за този красив град.
Defo for the tomatoes we have one of the world best tomatoes, especially the Bulgarian pink tomato
Agreed… thanks for watching my friend! 👍👌
@@J.E.E hahah - thank you!
What is the name of the kebab place where you ate the Lula Kebab? It looked so amazing!
It is called Lavash and it is right next to the fish pavilion!!! You won't regret it.
Be sure to tell Miro you came from Justin Eastern Europe👃
@@J.E.E I'll do. So it is the counterpart to the location at Golden sands, right? The golden sands location is already is on my bucket list.
@@TheFrankonia83 correct... The golden sands one is a sit down restaurant and the one in the market is more casual... Both worth a try👍
13:11 what a funny old lady 🤣 😂 😆
She sure was, so funny to interact with her👍👌
if you want ,in the summer if you are still in Bulgaria , I'm gonna give you to try a real nice homemade it rakia , matured couple of years , destilated couple of times , produced by my father of law . You really gonna like it , you gonna forget to drink Gin and weskey ! :) You just need a big coup of Shopska salad 🥗 😅👌😎
The rakia guy is hilarious :D

Is this in the fall/autumn? Feel like. I don't know why this video jumped on me, i see this chanel for the first time. But I live in the area of this Pazar and i know it very well. :) Congrats 👏
Welcome to Bulgaria.
It’s a beautiful city😀😀👍👍
Hi Petter.
It really is, I love traveling to Varna.
J'ai vraiment apprécié votre périple sur Varna. Vous avez un bon "feeling" avec les gens. Bravo ! Continuez.
this people are poor brother at the bazar u should tip them more i mean like prices are cheap when u get something for 1-2 euro atleast give them 4-5 and that will make their day they will remember u for a long time if u do this and they will tell stories about u at dinner believe me im from Bulgaria
Is this a recurring market? When and where can I find it?
Which year is this? Prices seem lower than in Moldova
Justin Come to Macedonia... BEST regards
Dude u killed it :D You are getting my subscripiton,I am from Varna it was a lot of fun to watch the videos from your trips to Varna hahahaha message me next time when you are here we can make great content ! Big fan , keep up the good work !
Did u just say "lets see if we can find one" while standing in front of Chatalja? ;)
Great content. "Baivan" is actually bai Ivan. Sometimes people would add "bai" in front of older men's names.
I looked up real estate prices there and seems that rents are real cheap, but it is heck of expensive to buy. I am comparing prices with Greece. For that price 85K could get nice place in Greece.
You are right the rents are super low.
I think there are good deals to be found on the buy side, just have to be there and ready to act
Thanks for watching and commenting 👌👍
Малко ми приличаш на Годжи :) Нищо лично в кръга на майтапа :)
You can try " ȚUICĂ DE PRUNE "from România it is like Rakia but stronger. Very nice vlog 👍

Someone got to let Mr. Bald and Bankrupt know about his twin brother haha

ХАХАХАХХАА, 33:10, Вика му - Не пъпеш кат тебе!!! На глас се изхилих. The translation is not complete, missed the part where he joked that this is not a melon like yourself. Being called a melon in Bulgaria is like a joke for being silly :D
7:33 jus a tip m8 wash the vegetables every time before eating
LOL Video started literally 10 meters away from Chayka market which is the local market there. Then travelled 4km to Kolkhoz market.
Hello my friend and thank you for watching.
Let me correct you, I was across the street from Chataldzha not Chaika!!! Wrong neighbourhood.
And Kolkhozen is the main market in Varna!!!
Thank you for commenting mate👍
@@J.E.E Yeah thanks that's called Chataldzha really. You was 10 meters away from it.
@@baievan74 I do question your IQ. I’d bet this salad existed in its shape, form, and name when you were born. There is your “tradition”.
You made me very hungry .
Mission accomplished👌👍
