The Most Tragic Coach in College Football

- With the recent retirement of Nick Saban at Alabama, many conversations have arisen about who the greatest coach in college football is now that he's gone. He was one of the sports' most prolific schemers and program builders, and easily earns his crown as the best of the modern era.
But lost in translation are the coaches who never won national championships that did jobs as impressive-if not more impressive-than those national championship winners. Among those underrated coaches is Jerry Kill: the most tragic coach in college football.
Time and time again Kill proved his worth as one of the sports' greatest program builders, only to have it ripped away from him due to medical issues beyond his control.
Come with me as I examine the incredible and sad career of one of Kansas' native sons: Jerry Kill. - Спорт
I love this video, but as someone who is going to SVSU, the way you pronounce Saginaw is going to drive me insane lol
my bad 😂
@@lukeontheplainslol it’s fine. I’m happy my school got a mention. I think that’s the first time that’s ever happened on a big channel like this.
@@lukeontheplains no worries, lol. The g is hard like Saggy pants, rather than soft like giant.
@@lukeontheplains You know what's crazy? Me, a Kstate alumni now living near SVSU
Yea, the way he pronounces it would be the last way I would ever sound out that word.
I was blessed to have Coach Kill as my Head Coach from 2008-2010 at NIU. He changed my life. He demanded everything you had, plus some. Even just being the Long Snapper for the Huskies, it was demanded to have this level of professionalism and reliability both on and off the field. He was so passionate about his team and in particular special teams, that our specialist meetings would be directly with Coach Kill every day. Remind you, he was the Head Coach, that’s unheard of. He helped me develop as a football player to receive votes for the East West shrine bowl, to improving my grades, improving my mindset, and most importantly how to grow up and become a father at the young age of 20. Coach Kill is so much more than a football coach, he is a Leader of Men. I attribute so much of my life’s success to his leadership. God bless Coach Kill!
What Jerry Kill has done with NMSU is more than remarkable might be the greatest Two Year coaching job in the history of the sport.
As a epileptic, I totally understand and support Jerry Kill. When he was in the Big 10 at Minnesota, it felt someone was living my life. I knew exactly what he meant when he exclaimed ' I am not a freak.'
I attended SIU while he was AD there. He used to drive around campus on a golf cart on game days giving kids rides to the stadium or yelling the fight song outside of dorms through a megaphone. His passion was infectious, and he wanted us to love football just as much as he did.
I’ve followed Kill since he was at ESU. He’s always epitomized that working-class ethic. This video does his career justice. Thanks for calling attention to him!
as a Minnesota fan this doc will hit me like a truck
Man if he didnt have seizures he would be a hall of famer. That is insane.
As an alum of New Mexico State, he proved me wrong. I didn't think the Aggies would ever have a winning season two years in a row. Thanks, Jerry.
Another banger from dalukes
I never knew before I watched your videos how much I was interested in Kansas centric football but here I am
I have no idea what your day job is but you are a fantastic story teller. Loved this video. You're like if Jon Bois and Ken Burns had a baby that really loved Bill Snyder. Keep doing what you are doing man. It's great stuff.
As a K-State fan, I was somewhat aware of Kill's career at Minnesota, and of his health issues. I was impressed that he was up to taking the Assistant AD job with the Wildcats after his health forced him out at Minnesota. It's truly impressive how much he's accomplished in spite of those issues and equally heart-wrenching to think of what heights he might have risen to with even average health.
Legendary TCU interim head coach, Jerry Kill (Gary Patterson's best friend & best man at GP's wedding)
30 players hit the transfer portal @NMSU once Coach Kill step down, the impact of 1 man
Sag-in-aw your pronunciation killed me 😂😂
Followed him as of Southern Illinois and am a Gophers fan. He was the most solid coach at Minnesota in generations.
What Fleck's team did in 2019 is a miracle, but looking at the roster, so many of the key players from that season were essentially Kill products/recruits. If Kill had remained healthier in MN you have to wonder if the Gophers could've gone further.
As a Minnesota grad (class of 2012) I witnessed our loss to his NIU team. His Gophers teams were the only ones I ever felt like we had a chance to win anything.
Loved Jerry. I was saddened when he took Flecks comments personally, but realizing how much effort he put in, the improvements he made while giving up his health... I can understand why he would take it personally now. Heck, I would have, too. Thank you, Jerry! We're proud to have had you as our lead Gopher.
As a Liberty fan, we respect Jerry Kill. Great guy.
dog this is the perfect amount of jon bois-isms added to your content to make stories about people and individual teams engaging. you've always been amazing with the conference histories but you hit your stride here brother
SIU SALUKIS MENTIONED RAHHHH 🔥🔥🔥
WHERE TF IF EDWARDSVILLE
I loved this guy while he was at Minnesota.
As a coach and being from Wichita, I love Coach Kill's story. It's a shame more people from our area don't know the legend of the man and that his story didn't have a happier path.
I went to Webb City high school and played on the football team. I've always rooted for Coach Kill because of what he created there. The man is nothing short of magic and it's so unfortunate his health couldn't keep up.
Outstanding video, thank you for putting this together!
I'm happy to see videos like this more on RUclips. You're doing a great job. Keep up the good work.
Jerry Kill coached my high school football coach at Saginaw Valley State in the 1990s. He spoke extremely highly about Jerry and modeled a lot of what we did around what he learned from playing for Jerry.
Great Video, keep making more videos like this.
This was a sad but yet another Awesome Video
I can’t wait to see how you top this one, because last time I was here I thought I had seen your best video.
Saw this in my recommended and watched your video knowing very little about JK. You did a fantastic job telling this man’s story. I wish nothing but the best for Coach Kill and your channel. You easily got a sub from me.
Another great video.
I’d be interested in seeing a similar one on Ralph Friedgen, a longtime assistant who finally got a HC job, rescuing his alma mater from obscurity, only to lose it all in bizarre fashion ten years later.
Wonderful video
DANG dalukes, your videos keep getting better and better! Keep it up !
Wow man I never heard of this. That man had more courage than most people in the world. God bless him.
Great freaking story. Didn't know who he was until this video, now I'm a Kill fan. What a warrior!!
glad I managed to stumble not your channel a while back. Good stuff as always.
I really wonder if so much of the heart that led my Frogs to the CFP in 2022 came from Jerry’s investment there in 2021. Losing Patterson was hard… and I was blown away by Jerry’s mindset taking over a pretty listless team. What a guy.
Great video! Love your stuff!
This was beautiful good stuff man I’m a big fan of
Jerry Kill was a true fighter who inspired everyone. Loves the game!
haven't watched all of the video yet, but instantly recognized that M logo. Ski-U-Mah!
SIU was fun to watch under him and I remember missing the SIU vs. Delaware State game because it was cold and absolutely pouring down rain. I was listening to it through my dorm room window in Schneider Hall across the highway and it’s one of the most disappointing/missed moments of my life for two reasons. 1) I missed seeing Nick Hill, who became a walk on for the Chicago Bears only to get cut weeks later, go up against Joe Flacco. Nick Hill was fun to watch that entire season and came back to be an assistant coach the next year. 2) we lost.
I'm an SIU alum and got to watch him take us to the semi-final vs Joe Flacco and Delaware. Kill is a phenomenal coach. He was going to do big things at Minnesota and, even though I'm a Michigan fan, I rooted for his success so hard. Tragic his time there was cut short.
As a Minnesota alum, I'm extremely grateful for what he did to raise the program up from the depths of embarrassment that Tim Brewster took it down to. (You completely misread how his first season was viewed back home, by the by - losing to NDSU was considered humiliating and beating a hated arch-rival in a trophy game for the first time in years was basically as close as you get to a bowl game in a rebuilding year). We were all sad when he had to step down, but understanding. I felt bad that he was bitter about what went down with Tracy Claeys being fired after he left, because I still felt positively about him but think the school had to do what it did.
What he did at New Mexico State was an inspiration, and I hope he looks back on his career with pride and not regret.
Once again, another GREAT video! I remember thinking he’d be the guy to turn Minnesota into a powerhouse if it wasn’t for his health. After watching this, I do feel he accomplished a lot despite his health issues. I will say that as a Michigan native…never mine others mentioned it! 🤣 great video!!
Good vid man 👍. Worked with Matsakis, Limegrover and Copeland as a staff member. Crazy coincidence
I went to SIU during that 2007 run. Heck of a squad, just unfortunate to run into Joe Flacco & Delaware.
I also went to HS with a guy who was a true freshman on the team that year. He said he loved playing for Coach Kill. Was really sad to see him go.
I remember how sad it was to hear Kill was retiring. I thought he would be the one to finally turn Minnesota into a powerhouses.
We are glad to have him in Nashville.
NMSU fan here. Jerry Kill is the goat. I'll always be thankful for what he did for the Aggies.
Coach Kill is actively coaching at Vanderbilt during Spring practice. His voice can be heard over everybody else, and his vocabulary has many words of 4-letter lengths. Coach Beck's offense has been about as potent as the Chicago White Sox offense through the first 20 games. If it cannot move against the weakest SEC defense by far in a controlled setting, how will it do against the defenses of Alabama, Georgia, and Texas?
Your videos are so good! Minor nitpick in the spirit of getting better. The background music towards the end, while certainly ominous, was grating on the ear and really distracting. Change it up and maybe turn down the volume a little. Otherwise, keep up the awesome work!
I know there’s some beef between him and PJ Fleck, but that’s a shame. Kill saved the Gophers’ program after the disastrous Brewster years, and PJ would not have been able to have had the success he has had at Minnesota without Kill first taking the program from a a dumpster fire to a respectable one.
Winning at a blue blood means nothing. Winning at a bottom feeder is true greatness. Bill Snyder is the best coach in the BCS/playoff era.
I was at that game when Jerry Kill had that seizure on the field. It was eerie.
beloved in blacksburg. had to handhold the whole goddamn coaching staff in 2019. wouldnt have minded if we just fired fuente right then and there and hired kill tbh
Class act.
SIU was talking about getting rid of football before Kill arrived. The stadium was a morgue. SIU had only two winning seasons between 1984-2002. I went to school there and watched some of the worst football in my life. The reversal there in 2003 was one of the most amazing things I’ve seen. Absolute culture-changer
This was a rough watch. Ive had 2 seizures and my vocabulary and wit have been reduced to a point i dont feel im the same person. I can only imagine trying to retain so much info after having several.
Mike Leach sincerly thought the best football coach in history would probably found at the High School level, but Jerry Kill is probably up there with the greats as far as I'm concerned.
A great man.
Dalukes dropping banger after banger
Love Big Jer. Fleck is a salesman, and I don’t mean that as a compliment. Wish Jerry’s health didn’t betray him.
Certified banger
It's Sag-i-naw. Listen to the Lefty Frizzell song "Saginaw, Michigan", to pronounce it correctly.
I've got it. Half the comments section is that lol, probably won't make that mistake again in my life
Jon bois needs to see this
9:50 University of Delaware Blue Hens mentioned 🔥🔥 joe Flacco 🔥🔥
As a Michigander the way you say Saginaw is triggering haha
We just call it the M-I-Double A around here for future reference 😂 Great video though!
I'm a Badgers fan, and I do not heap praise on the Golden Rodents. But if Jerry Kill has not earned your respect, there might be something wrong with you. He brought that football team up from irrelevance to the level where people like the boat-rowing guy considered it to be a destination. If not for the seizures, I think he would have made them even better.
DELAWARE MENTIONED HOOO RAHHH
nevermind this shit made me sad as hell
Good video, but Sadjinaw?
Where were you last when Jerry was Kill?
Good man who deserved better
4:58 sag-in-awe
he’s cooking
As an Alabama fan, I think everyone should pronounce Jordan-Hare like that.
The real reason for the Minnesota Gopher success in 2019
TCU Horned Frog LEGEND Jerry Kill
If not for the health issues the sky would have been the limit to what he could have possibly accomplished in his career
7:07. Pronounced Lime Grover. Just like it's spelled
I’m just sitting here waiting patiently on the movie that will be the history of the SEC when he makes it.
😢
National Titles are no the end all be all. Frank Beamer and Bill Snyder don't have titles, while Gene Chizik and Jimbo Fisher do.
“Sag - in -Awe”!!!
I'm rooting for Kill to get Vandy some wins. Just please not against the Gamecocks 😅Would be amazing if they beat Auburn. Get Hugh Freeze a second time. Very impressive what he did with his team last year
Mike Leach had his pirate sword. Did Jerry have a favorite emblem or hobby ? 🤔
Another tragic coach would be Jeff Tedford. Just food for thought.
22:45 worst pronunciation of jordan-hare stadium i have ever heard
👏
Bullshit, he was given the keys to the kingdom at NMSU and then bailed after it became successful. Then took the players and coaches with him. Don't feel bad for this dude.
It’s Jordan Hare not Jordan O’ Hare
How do you mention great coaches without mentioning Chris Peterson
The true greatest tragedy was Scott Frost
You are pronouncing the "g" in saginaw wrong. Its just a regular short G sound.
It would be hard to find a program that was as bad as SIU in the 90s and he turned it around in just a couple of years.
Fran-chee-oh-knee
Brian Kelly coached against (and beat) Jerry Kill in the late 90’s. Anyways, point is that BK alone destroys Kill’s winning ability, and he’s no where near the likes of Saban. Also, Kill is a little girl in respects to professionalism.
that's... not at all what I was arguing. thanks for the ragebait interaction though, boosts my exposure
You can thank me later
@@Illhostility
Um.
Seems like he thanked you earlier....
You’re a clown
Love the video, but, as a local, I gotta say it's sag-in-aw (as in sagging)
Still love the vid
Sajinaw
