  • Did viking berserkers use mushrooms? Maybe not. Today I explore the commonly held belief that vikings may have used flly agaric mushrooms to induce their rage in battle. Hard to say if this is true or note, but I lay forth a few reasons why it might not be so.

From my own experience, the "Berserker Rage" is induced by the warrior himself... if they happened to feed mushrooms to an "over the top angry killing machine", it would probably not induce that state of rage by itself, but amplify the feelings that he was already having. Its not a coincidence that Berserkers were an elite group, not every human can enter this state by themselves.

From my understanding from folk lore here in scandinavia, we didn't eat it, we drank it.
if you ask me Amanitas description of her head getting red lines up perfectly and as she says it makes you very focused I feel like if you're focused on something like a medieval battle then the berserker would be very focused on killing people.
furthermore, again from local folk lore it was also used outside of battle for other things such as drinking it before intercourse, this suggests that it didn't cause the anger and violence.
anyway they put other things in the drink as well, might be a different recipe depending on the desired outcome.

I think it's important to remember the set behind your intention of any psychedelic, the amanita can focus you but what if you were to focus that towards your rage towards your destructive tendencies, when we talk about berserkers we're talking about Men of war of battle and that's what they wanted out of that experience.

If they knew them as a powerful consciousness altering mushroom, I can imagine that they ate it all the time.
    Not just potentially before battle.
They're end goal is to reach Valhalla.
A place that is closed to all cowards and those who have not died in battle.
I can also picture them as they spend their lives becoming the most terrifying, the most violent , the most beast mode viking on the battle Field.
They would be called upon to be a guest weapon in specific key battles where they would be"released" on the field like ordinance .
I believe their Sessions with the local psychedelic flora did not include ANY of the barefoot, crystal hippie, tie die , peace and love thoughts of present. When they ran naked through the woods ,
they didn't chase some drop dead cute drop out with flowers in her hair,
They were just doing their daily routine of killing bears and elk with an Axe.
Berserkers weren't just elite soldiers, they left their clans in childhood and lived in the wilderness as an animal.
They would train everyday all day like Chinese monks.
They would choose a life of solitude to become a berserker.
They weren't like men in bear suits, they were more like bears in man suits.
years of dedicated living in the wild, and pulling supernatural powers from a deep spiritual connection to the land and the ferocious predators they would embody.

I’m not saying one way or the other if the Berserkers used Amanita Muscaria, but I think we should be wary of putting our own cultural conceptions on other cultures, just because in our culture we tend to associate psychedelic drugs with a “peace and love” kind of vibe. Another example of this is hashish. The word assassin reportedly comes from the word hashish, and apparently the people called assassins may have smoked hashish before doing their deeds, something I cannot imagine doing while under the influence of that drug.

    • @murrijuana2842

Not reportedly, allegedly. After some research I found the hashish story to be a bit of a stretch.

@@murrijuana2842 I’m not surprised, it always seemed a little hard to believe. But I think my point about not projecting our cultural tendencies on other cultures (especially past cultures) still makes some sense. It may well be that the Viking Berserkers didn’t use these mushrooms, but I don’t think Amanita Dreamer’s anecdotes about how the mushrooms affect her constitute evidence against that idea. A drug that produces a peaceful high in our culture might produce a very different experience in a different cultural context.

    • @1rober2
      @1rober2 Год назад

Drugs are what falsely is sold in the pharmacy as medicine. Psycodelics does not induce any states of mind. What they do is to open up your capability to experience those states.
According to ones intentions one might not experience a peaceful state, but access Hell or a maybe a warrior state. I believe that you are right that culture may to some degree determine the outcome.

The Arabic word ḥašīš also meant general herbage, like the English word "grass". That was also more likely to be one of the tropane poisons like henbane. They cause extreme suggestibility and quite often also cause amnesia. They also cause brain and bodily damage at quite low doses. i know several people who were mentally crippled from using datura and never recovered.

I’m taking Psychopharmacology at University and there are actually some factors that would lend some credibility to the Amanita hypothesis:
1: The individual differences between people’s neurophysiology changes how the active drug acts on the brain.
2: The individual’s mental “set” meaning their endogenous chemistry at the time of dosing changes how the drug will affect the brain and psychological state of the individual.
3: The actual setting, like during warfare, would be highly stimulating and induce adrenaline and states of aggression, which would account for the rage part of the neurophysiological ‘set’. The disinhibition brought on by the GABA receptor agonist chemical Muscimol would account for the indiscriminate state of rage and aggression in so much as the mind of the warriors were in a rage and ‘fight’ mode prior to receiving major disinhibition from a large dose of a GABA agonist.
4: The redness of the face is accounted for by Amanita dreamer, and also, I’ve heard some different anecdotal experiences from folks who picked and baked their Amanitas where they were physically sluggish and incapacitated for 1-3 days after their experience, so the comedown lasting that long also makes sense.
5: The viking warrior’s up-regulated enzyme induction might have been increased with repeated use, thus they would be able to metabolize the active drug faster leading to a tolerance, and less negative side effects of use.
6: Perhaps the vikings didn’t eat them raw, but they had a special preparation that led to differing chemistry in the active drug they imbibed.
I’m not trying to do anything but encourage some alternative view on the subject, and say that its not discounted as a hypothesis strictly based on Amanita Dreamer’s subjective anecdotal experience and subjective analysis of those she did ceremonies with.

We focus too much on one mushroom/one compound. Feeling cold and face red sometimes accompany ingestion of Psilocybe Semilanceata. What if it was some mixture of different fungi and plants whose specific mixture caused the physical symptoms? Mental state in the case of psychoactive substances may depend on the attitude. If, through a kind of meditation (?), they got into a state of anger, then such substances could multiply it.
Sometimes when I'm doing my weight lifting training, I play some compilation of "dark powerful music" and achieve a similar state from the description. The rage and fury I feel gives me goosebumps until I feel a tingling sensation under my skin. I channel these feelings into training. I heard a discussion about "liberty cap" mushroom, like if it was potentially used in history as sort of a poor mans night vision by using eating small amount and thus helping when hunting. It would be interesting to hear if there is any truth to this, does it really help seeing in low light, perhaps detect movement of animals easier?

I attest to the enhanced night vision; it let me notice the blue bioluminescence of woodlice, which was too dim to see when looked at directly; they sparkled clearly in the rest of my vision. EDIT: These may well have been lightning bug larvae, perhaps of a species that does not glow as an adult, which I initially dismissed due to the color being blue, not yellow.

I covered myself with my own feces and ran through a party which was going on, I slightly injured myself but I could feel no pain.... A few weeks later I thought I'd try a smaller amount,,, I ended up jumping off the fireplace mantle really injuring myself but again feeling no pain,,, unaware of what I was doing, I ended up in the hospital in Grand rapids Michigan, when I awoke on a gurney in the hallway of the hospital I found a large bite,,, self-inflicted out of my arm.... I laid off the mushrooms for a while after that,,, but then in 2001 I went to the telluride mushroom festival in Colorado, I love tripping on that mushroom so again I tried 13 g of amanita muscaria panther caps, after marching in the parade, I began to feel numb all over, that's the last thing I remember I took my clothes off and ran through the festival,, running around I could have injured myself so someone tried to help me and I almost broke his leg,, I was told this after-the-fact I had no awareness of what was going on, that you're at the festival dr. Andrew wild was giving lectures, and was camping in the campground at the festival,,, he tried to talk me down until I fell asleep he thought I was okay, so he left, but when I walk I started up again running all over the place, totally off & out of control ... I am now 67 years old,, I took that mushroom for over 10 years without any incidences until 2001,,, I haven't took the muscaria sense,,, but I'm tempted because I like the high... I'm very experienced in the use of psychedelics including, San Pedro cactus, psilocybin, salvia divinorum,,,

That would make sense as your state of consciousness is heightened, you become more present, more in-the-moment so things around you would appear to slow down because you can perceive them as so and you have the advantage. I experience this with long term meditation and mindfulness practice, as my general awareness was broader, i would almost see things before they happen. Same thing with other magic mushrooms and cannabis.

Definitely depends on you. It’s not like it’s gonna turn a hippie into a warrior out of nowhere, but with the experiences me and my buddy had, yeah if we were trained soldiers who had planned on going into battle anyway, sure, it could work in the right dosage. At even relatively high dosages, I was still able to function in my surroundings. I mean, there are a lot of drugs that have been used one way by a shaman and one way by a soldier. No offense to the dreamer, but it sounds like she’s not at all using it in the same contextual setting as a half-naked bear-clad Swedish warrior in the freezing woods.

Every part of life for them was religious and they were career warriors. Tripping balls is not conducive to effective warfare. My understanding is that the mushroom ceremonies happened well before the actual raids, like a whole day before. The positive effects of the trip can last days or weeks beyond the actual trip, and combining war preparation with shamanic shape shifting ceremonies is sure to be effective for some. I didn't find the conclusion of this video particularly convincing.

I think it would be possible that the two would be consumed together, maybe with alcohol. Beer was brewed with bog myrtle before hops was sued, and the hangovers were alleged to be severe and lasting for days - explaining the "feeble state".

They were warrior shamans. Creganford (sp?) has a video about Berzerkers that suggests it or states it outright (cant recall exactly).
Of course 'power plants' like amanita musc. have been used by shamans for a long long time.
Also bear shirts reminds me of south-east Asian 'warrior shamans' called 'Kong gra pan' in Thai, one of which is 'king of the bears' magick because their hides & fur protect them from puncture wounds from other animals and bears are powerful & aggressive 'fighters' when provoked.
Also when the spirit takes over, one becomes aggressive like a provoked animal such as a bear or tiger (a colloquial name for Kong gra pan is 'big tiger' - 'seua yai') until the threat has passed or the fight has ended.
    Cheers

Asking a mushroom girl if she would imagine becoming a berserker is absolutely absurd. I can assure you from personal experience that magic mushrooms can induce extreme States of barbarianism, rage and energy. It has to do with your own body chemistry (hormone profile), genetics and state of mind. Do the experiment with soldiers about to go to war or fighters about to fight in a cage and you'll see what happens. You're both soft humans, and will gain insights from your soft baseline and perspective, and that is fine.

The Vikings most likely had stronger stomachs than we have now in first world countries because they had to be able to eat food that doesn’t break down as easy. Maybe because of this trait, they could eat a larger amount? Also they enjoyed fighting, so the mushroom could help them dial in on their hobby which happened to be violence

In the Viking sagas the vikings used it the day before they went into battel. First the vikings would feel the sedative effects of muscimol and get sleepy. However next moring they would get more energy and feel like ther where unstoppeble. When a viking army ran down while tripping to pillage a village they would to the most unspeakeble acts.
