  • I'm testing to see if the Forward Collision Warning system on my i3 will stop me from running over a human sized box. Hopefully this video will help those of you who are wondering what this system does on the i3 as there is conflicting information out there. NOTE: BMW does have a video of "Active Assist" on the i3 which does collision avoidance however, this system is not available (at least in North America).
I comparison with the collision warning system on my Prius V, this one seems to require more attention. The BMW system is an optical system based on a single forward facing camera. It is frequently forced to shut off if it is looking directly into the sun or at a bright reflection. I do not see this issue with the radar system on the Prius. The camera also has some difficulty recognizing cars ahead when in "adaptive cruise control". The advantage of the optical system however is that with improved software, BMW could use the camera to do lane keeping and autonomous driving which is usually not possible with a radar only system.

The collision warning does NOT work on boxes or any strange objects on the road. It must be another car or motorbike which is detected by the camera system in the i3 because of the shape and relecting elements.

Hey! I own an i3 and with the forward collision avoidance the car alerted me, started to stop the car (until I took over braking) and I was successfully able to stop before rear ending a stopped car (they had hit the car in front of them and slammed on the brakes) with my cruise control set to 60mph. Unfortunately the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan behind me didn’t have time to stop. Lol.
I’ve also had a teenager run out in front of the car while driving through an intersection and the car stopped and beeped at me like crazy!
It works well, however my only complaint is sometimes when cars pass me, or a car is coming my way on a 2 way street with the cruise control on, the car thinks that I am going to hit them and it automatically applies the brakes. That happens very seldom, though. I think that since you used a box the car was not able to register that there was an obstacle.

im sure in their process of the FCA development, they thought "lets test it to make it foolproof with cardboard boxes!"

Just rear ended a van in traffic. No alert no stop which trigged often normally.
