I could only imagine the player he would be today if he had never gotten hurt. He still has great instincts but if that same speed and explosiveness was still there he'd be a perennial pro bowler.

God please let this kid heal 100%, make a full recovery and get back on the field, he's something special. Being a Bears fan, I wouldn't even care if he was playing for GB, I just want to watch this kid play and shine at the next level. Your time will come, young man.

Work Hard Spend Smart His ceiling is so high. He's a pro bowl caliber linebacker and beyond. Dallas got one hell of a football player.

After watching this and thinking about how the Cowboys draft strategy has been, I'm starting to understand the genius of the Dallas office and how they evaluate players. The Cowboys don't draft based off hype and name recognition and don't try too hard to go after the "stars" of college football (like passing up Johnny Manziel in 2014). Instead, they draft based on fundamentals and excellence at positional skill and how players execute their play. This video shows how much of a beast Jaylon Smith is, but it highlights his fundamentals at linebacker. Sooo many young linebackers and plenty of SEC linebackers go for big plays and big hits waay too much, and sacrifice fundamentals and getting the tackle. This kid plays so conservative that it helps him. On so many of these plays he sits and waits for the tackle to actually make sure he gets the guy down. The play at 0:43 against Texas, so many linebackers would run up for a big hit and end up missing and getting they ass broke along with their ankles. This man sat here, literally hopped back and forth with the QB running the ball and mimicked his foot movements and got the tackle. He was NOT getting juked on this play. The play at 0:59, so many players would have overshot that tackle and missed. The play at 1:13, besides that deadly ass hit at the end of the blitz, he ran down a straight line to the QB, just like the coaches teach LB's to do. So many players would have either ran past the QB probably from taking a bad ankle, or been going all over the place bumping o-linemen (like Von Miller does). Perfect high-low gang tackle at 1:39 and ended up with a fumble. Most hyped up linebacker this draft? (mostly) Myles Jack probably. Cowboys passed on him to get this guy, because his fundamentals are on point. And that ain't even it. Passed on Manziel in 2014, got Zack Martin, one of the best left guards in the league and can play right guard. Drafted Dak Prescott in 4th round, and look at how great he's playing and executing his position. Most hyped up QB's this draft were Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, Jacoby Brissett maybe, people were thinking the Cowboys would draft Paxton Lynch. But who is doing the best of all these QB's, Dak Prescott. Byron Jones wasn't hyped up in college, but he's a damn star at safety and nickle corner. Ezekiel Elliott was hyped up, but the Boys drafted him because of how good he was with positional skill and fundamentals. After the first game, Zeke's patience on runs, cutbacks, and the way he can find open grass is why they got him. That is exactly how they evaluated Jaylon Smith and why they drafted him, despite his injury. They know he'll be a good player when he comes back, because his fundamentals are amazing and his positional skill is NFL All Star caliber, hopefully.
We are grabbing only the athletic mutants, Look at Byron Jones, Tyron smith, Zeke Elliot and Jaylon smith. Put on that list Zack Martin and Travis Frederick and why not Lael collins, after some pull's he made against Seattle last year the kid looks like a bull.

Quick, fierce, patient, and relentless. This kid returns to form and we got a future star for this D. He has one of the best tackling forms I have seen out of a prospect that i have seen in the past several years.

Honestly, this 2015 college season was my favorite, i was depressed and i had gotten my own place. I was in a bad mental state of mind but the NFL and especially the college 2015 season kept me like sane. I really loved it. Jaylon was always fun to watch, Hagreaves, Ramsey, Fournette, Watson, Dak, Zeke, loved that year.

Dallas will welcome him. He has the same Doctor that Dallas does. They didn't make this pick blindly. Just remember that the defense wasn't anything special in 2014 but because our run game was so good it helped, a lot. Well our run game just got a whole lot better and should this kid ever get to 100% the defense in big D will be a lot different.

Cowboys got a steal here. Jaylon Smith is a freak and would have went top 10 in the draft this year if not for the knee. Knee is on pace to bring him back at the end of the season and should be 100% 2017. Jaylon Smith is the next Von Miller.
Dont get me wrong I think Myles Garret is going to be a great NFL linebacker. If his knee doesn't come back to bite him towards the middle of his career I don't think we will be saying prospects are going to be the next Vonn Miller, we will be saying he's the next Myles Garret.
Jaylon Smith is not as fast as Myles Garret, but he is a true leader, has well above average speed, and has great instincts. Not as fast as Miller but posses other similar characteristics. I do also think Jaylon Smith will become a MLB down the road.
His knee issue is the reason he slid to the second round. Before it was a known issue he was projected in the top 10. Team doctors stated his knee wasn't 100% healthy, and most thought it never would be.

very happy he is a cowboy. Now time for some good training and get this Defense where it needs to be. so far so good draft for the boys.
If he recovers and plays well next year, all the while dak Zeke and Anthony brown keep ballin out. The 2016 draft will go down as probably one of the greatest ever for any franchise. Rarely do you get four pro bowl caliber starters in one draft. I know that's wishful thinking but oh well, that's what fans are supposed to do.

This kids really got the talent and the skill set, give him a year or so in the NFL to develop, and he'll be among the best. He has the instincs, the right reaction time and the athleticism to make all the plays. Would definitely love to see him play with bowman or some other great LB's that could prodeje him. Either way he'll be wreaking havoc on the NFL in no time.

+Whosvibee He does both. He attacks, and he waits. He holds his position when needed, and he fires in there when the play is defined. He has to stay back sometimes so TE's and RB's releasing don't get behind him. It's good disciplined positional football.

Whosvibee I think you're misreading the plays possibly. Those iso's on him don't show the play being run -- they just show him staying back, moving his feet, and reading the play. Could possibly be draws or play action, and he's waiting to read the play before reacting.

The guy who did the surgery on him right after he got injured works for the Cowboys he would've had to said something to the team before they selected him
+Zaffiro Crime Family true and the same can happen with Jack, an inury can happen to anyone at anytime, there would have been a risk to taking Jack, only difference is Jack will play in 2016 & Smith won't . God forbid but Jack can get injured again & same goes with Smith
