  • Over the last 2-3 years I've been putting together a guitar rack inspired by Steve Lukather.
Its not an attempt to copy his gear, and so is simply inspired by some of the tools he used to create some awesome tones in the late 80's & early 90s'.
Here i talk though some lessons & observations, tips & tricks from the last 3 years.

Thank you for sharing! Im making a similar build - how did you connect the axe fx's 4 I/O's to integrate your outboard chorus and detune in the post amp section of your axe fx with the axe fx reverb? Assuming these all ran in series in Mix 1, but were then parallel summed in Mix 2 with your PCM70s?

Thanks for your interest. Axe FX is running in 4CM with the RJM Rack Gizmo as the switcher. So drives/phasers/wah come before the preamp (in series) in loop #3 of the RJM.
The Axe FX is then also in loop #5 of the RJM & the Lexicons in loops 6 & 7. All outputs from these devices in the loops 5 to 8 run into the CAE mixer.
To summarise, modulations (chorus, detune) go into Mix 1 & delays go into Mix2. Hope this helps

Hey man this is great! Any chance you could make a list and write everything out in the description of the clip? The rack units & signal chain of the gear? It all sounds heavenly through the phone, it comes through just fine.
Nothing will beat being in the room no matter how great your recording equipment is, so I know for me that it’s all good! Very clear and can totally enjoy the sounds you have sculpted! Thanks mate, Cheers!

I'll try. Its dbx, BBE, J Archer pedal & Axe fx running into the CAE & then out of the preamp & into Korg, Line6, Eventide, Lexicons & Axe FX into the CAE mixers. Mixers go into the Fryette power amp

*Man I am doing all of this with software (( WDW )) Neural DSP and Nembrini Amps; MODULATION Valhallla, Eventide Anthology, Overloud, Kuassa and PSP Audioware Plugins and using KUSHVIEW ELEMENT for the switcher/ mixer system in addition to I/O RME and using RME Total Mix... I also incorporate 2 BOSS SE70's in stereo series and a clean boost in the front after guitar before I/O. I control it all with a FRACTAL MFC 101.......................It sounds absolutely MASSIVE!!! And the clean boost on the front cleans up any digital aliasing on the VST AMPS, sh!t sounds and feels every bit of the real thing UMF, SHIMMER, SIZE, LUSTER AND ALL.... 3 Space 2012 DELL Optiplex 980 Desktop and a few racks.* ....and noise just doe snot exist!

That intro has one of the best tones I've ever heard, wow. What gear was used for that clip?

Cool project. I'm assuming this rig even though it's in the cases doesn't go anywhere. It would be an absolute bear to move around.

Did you order the half rack mixers directly from CAJ? If so, would you be so kind to send me contact details/a link to the respective website? Great rack btw!
