      Thanks so much! I've been trying some new things that have made making these a little quicker (editing videos on the iPad is weird, but super chill). Glad these still come off as high quality! I'm definitely looking forward to working more in this style, as well as adding some longer, more granular tutorials, too. :)

      @@ScottD That's cool, if anything i'm actually pretty interested in concept arts, lighting and inking, i'd really gladly watch whatever tips you can give on clip studio paint in the future. Or if you decide to go in depth with more basic tutorial i'm on board with it, take your time.

      @@frenchgundam9079 Cool! Yeah, I'm not as much a concept artist, but I have this big video on inking: ruclips.net/video/TaQqBpydH4s/видео.html
      I'm definitely going to be making more CSP vids, so stay tuned!

    I would definitely like to see more with both poseable drawing figures and the digital ones, with processes. Thanks for this video, keep up the good work. God bless:-)

    I'm an old gal who went to art school right on the cusp of the internet becoming widely used. We drew from life, old masters paintings, and photos to learn in class. I never remember our professors saying, "references are bad". In fact, saying such a thing negates photography itself as an art form, and I think my photography professor would have a word with you about that :) It's just that back then, references weren't acquired as easily, but they were definitely ok to use!
    It wasn't until I recently got into the Urban Sketching movement, that I figured out there is some sort of weird gate keeping in USK that photography is considered cheating. You must self-flagellate yourself in front of the group by labelling all work from reference as "NUS" (Not Urban Sketching.) They insinuate that anything from a photo must not be legitimate.
    This toxic attitude has also seeped into other online art sub-communities. The discussion has become a monster. The gatekeepers have taken the positives of drawing from life, combined it with the actual copyright issues from copying photos found on the internet, and created the assumption that drawing from anything but real life at all is "cheating."
    Anyone who says "X is cheating" strikes me as someone who is very inexperienced, and has no clue what techniques professional and historical artists have used to make what is widely accepted as amazing art. Hello, camera obscura?! I think Scott does a great job in this video at illustrating, in actual examples, the right way that references should be, and are frequently, used by artists. You would usually never have a clue, because many artists are terrified to admit they do it this way!
    Basically I feel like people are trying to figure out ways that some people's art is not "good enough" to be "real art." The artist on the pedestal must be "torn down" to their "level." This same type of attitude is rampant in the guitar community, with constant critiques that X guitarist "is a great player but doesn't have 'feeling' ". Totally subjective. My final view on the issue is, as long as copyright is being followed, does it really matter? And how does what someone else does affect you, and your art? MYOB :)

    No because all the great artists used models / references for their paintings. Even if we draw from memory, we must have seen that thing to commit it to memory, ergo we copy even if from memory. There is nothing wrong at all especially with the limited time we have to produce these days.

      Exactly! Deadlines don't let you twiddle around and spend a ton of time trying to get things right. Gotta make stuff quick! :)

    Yes it’s cheating, and I do it as often as I can. The 3D dolls in Clip I use almost exclusively, since the added a feature that pose the dolls from photos is awesome. The advantage is I can rotate them to any angle even tweak them. Clip has preloaded poses, I just don’t use the as much, it’s better for me to make my own and save them. Basically I don’t like leaving the app to get reference, it interrupts my work flow and I can be easily distracted. So I found it a great benefit to set some time aside to make poses in Clip.
    Thanks again for the great tips Scott.

      Ha! Yeah, I totally get not leaving the app. For me, photos are just quicker, but if I don't have my figurines available, I'll use the CSP models, for sure.

    Atleast what you say you "learned" but it's good also for what they want. I believe reference IS cheating.

    Agree... But who the heck defends not to use references? Never watched a vídeo on that. But there are a bunch saying that some people defend not to use references. Who are those guys?

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  4 года назад

      I think it's mostly beginners. I see a lot of beginning artists drawing figures and getting things wrong or wonky-looking that I wanted to just make this video encouraging them to use reference in their work. I'll be the first to admit the title is a little click-baity, but hey that's RUclips, I guess. haha :)

    All the Great Magazine Illustrators used photo references.
    Frazetta, Elvgren, Rockwell, Parrish... Pick a famous Illustrator...

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  4 года назад +1

      Totally! I just find that a lot of beginner artists shy away from using ref, so I wanted to make a video encouraging them to do so!

    oh yeah! thank you for this! this brings be back to kindergarten. the teacher wanted us to draw a zoo animal... being 5, i had never been to a zoo, so had no idea what a "zoo animal" was. so i looked around to see what others were drawing and saw an elephant. because i thought elephants were cool, i decided to draw and elephant... this caused a rift with my friend who accused be of "cheating"! what the hell!? I'm five! so i hit him... seemed like the thing to do at the time. ultimately NO ONE has the corner on the market of creativity. we all learn from each other. (sorry bud, for hitting you... but get over it... we learn by imitating)

    So what software do you recommend the most? Obviously they all have their ups and downs but I've seen you use them all it seems lol. I am working full time minimum wage so I don't have a lot of money but want to start sharing my work. I have stories written, just never drawn.

      I do most of my penciling and inking in Clip Studio Paint, then move to Photoshop for coloring. Procreate on the iPad is another great option. Krita is free software that a lot of people seem to enjoy, but I haven't used it a ton. But the cheapest way is just old fashioned paper and pencils! They still work great! :)

    Not using a reference is "cheating yourself" but tracing over a reference isn't cheating? Delusional.

    Using Reference is not cheat...centuries now it i s a tool in the art of Painting....the masters used the light from a window (as a ''primitive'' projector)....nowdays artist use Photoshop, projectors etc. If you do bad Art this way you just are not so good artist. Alex Ross is a bad ass in drawing and painting (colour).
