Excellent comparison! The L-mount versions can simulate linear focus if they are adjusted with Sigma's usb dock. I'm not sure if this is part of the L-Mount Alliance standard, yet, but it looks like it will be.
We were planning on only doing a short of the 23mm (Sony currently has no up-to-date APS-C cameras, unless you count the FX30 I guess which we don't own). Maybe I can squeeze in more testing into that short and add an actual article with a little more info (not like these reviews but a bit more content than a 1 min short).
Would you recommend the Sigma 50mm dg dn f2, the Sony 55mm Zeiss 1.8 or the Sony 50mm f2.5 G? I feel they’re all covering a similar area of the lens lineup for the Sony system. I hope you take the time to reply; I always find your insight very helpful.
Hi Darren, We actually own the Zeiss 55 which is one of our least favorite lenses (we got it years ago). The Sigma f/2 is nice and cute and so is the Sony 50mm f/2.5 (which we didn't test ourselves). Between the two - it's hard to say as we didn't put them side by side ourselves. Looking at Chris Frost's review the Sony looks very sharp in the center and fairly good in the corners - I would say it might be a hair sharper than the Sigma - but the Sigma is a bit faster and cheaper so I don't know - I am guessing both should be pretty good for a small form factor 50mm.
@@LensVid as always thanks for taking the time to reply. It sounds like the 55mm zeiss is your least favourite and then the sigma and Sony 50mm G f2.5 are quite close together and you can’t go wrong with either. Is that about right? I’m just checking I understand your advice correctly.
@@darrenhaken Yes. Again I didn't put the Sigma and Sony side by side in our own test so it is based on Frost's review but it seems to be that way. The Sigma 1.4 is a much sharper lens (also faster but heavier and more expensive - it is basically in a very different category).
@@IddoGenuth indeed, the sigma 50mm 1.4 is another option but I fear it’s size and weight will turn me away for it. I was looking for a nice street/everyday lens for family photos.
@@darrenhaken for street/light travel both should be really nice. The Sigma 1.4 and new Sony 1.4 which we didn't test are more for dedicated portraiture with an emphasis on background separation.
Thank you. As for side-by-side - we are limited by the software we use (Fastone) to 4 images at the same time so you need to decide if you want to show 2 double or 4 single f-stops. Sometimes 2 are enough and sometimes we decided to show 4 and another 4. Anyway - you can always read the article on LensVid and view the results there (it is better than YT compression anyway).
@@IddoGenuth I see. You could always do this in post by cropping the footage. Versus comparisons are infinitely more useful with side-by-side, perhaps even with a 2X or 4X zoomed in crop to compensate for the compression. As a user, I would be more likely to watch another video where this direct comparison is shown than click on a link in the video description.
@@stoikerty We agree that it is better but if you want to show 4 different f-stops of two different lenses it is simply too much work. Remember that we test multiple aspects of a lens it's not just one test.
AT 5:35 the Samyang has a clear adavntage over the Sigma. The Sigma 50mm F1.4 has TERRIBLE chromatic abboration. You can even see the hints of it in that shot. Right in the center of the frame. It's inexcusable and shocking you gave the Sigma the advantage there.
I agree with you about the CR wide open (I wouldn't call it terrible but it is noticeable). I see no real advantage in terms of sharpness in the center to the Samyang and the corners you will agree are a huge huge win for the Sigma - so it depends on what you emphasize here (you can fix most CA, fixing corner sharpness is more problematic).
@@IddoGenuth I agree with that. I'm a video shooter so for me my priorities are the opposite. I care most about CA and soft corners aren't as big of a problem. To me, the fact that you can see redness in a center shot of a flat object is really bad for a modern lens. But overall I value everything, so I have the Sigma 40mm F1.4 which is optical perfection. Im just beyond dissapointed in how bad some footage has been on the Sigma 50, as I'd prefer that focal length. But the Sigma 40 is really noticably a level up. Oh well.
@@DrWNoLs I hear you. We use the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 a lot. It has great AF for video but it's not perfect optically (honestly none of the 85mm we tested so far are (maybe the upcoming Sony 85mm f/1.2 will be - fingers crossed).
pardon - a nearly useless "test"... 1. until ca. 4:50 only data from the Sigma homepage... and 2. e.g 5:37 - sharpness comparison beyond the pixel enlagergment: you cannot estimate or judge the edge sharpness and also not the contrast.. . beside that: other test inclusive MTF measurements show that both lenses are very similar at equivalent apertures. Maybe the 2.0 isn't as good as the other in the nearest distance... but we don't know the specifications of your measurements... AND: @ 8:39, "Size" - it is really not professionell to compare two lenses in a different way - one with hood, the other w/out. try harder, please;-)
