I lived in Truro from 1958-63 and travelled daily by train from Truro to Penmere Platform, the nearest station to Falmouth Grammar School which I attended. My home in Truro was overlooking the old engine sheds and used to walk from there each day to Truro station via the black lattice-work footbridge over the station and featured in your video Jen. Overall a great video that brought back so many memories of happy times over 65 years ago!!

i visited Falmouth back in 2016 while i was holidaying in Plymouth & i walked to pendennis castle & the vews are amazing & falmouth is a great town more of a fishing town but a nice area & the stations on this lone looks lovely & 150s def need replacing brilliant vlog
Falmouth still good for visiting - esp with its range of pubs/bars - it's like a slightly smaller Newquay without the w*nkers.
Thanks for bringing back happy memories, Hen! I did a post-graduate diploma at the then Falmouth College of Arts back in 2001, and regularly used the Maritime Line; not sure if it was called that back then. Nice to see the old semaphore signals still in situ at Truro station….glad somethings never change! Enjoy yourselves!
I went to FCA / UCF / FU between 2002-2005 and the Maritime Line branding came around 2004ish, possibly just after the Maritime Museum opened.
Hi Jen. Well, it's got to be an awful job, bowling around Cornwall on trains, but someone's got to do it!! I dunno .... Pacers have been gone for 5 minutes and everyone starts on the 150s. 😲

I was a teen when I did that line and remember "The Dell". That passing loop reminds me of the layout on the Croydon tramway at Wimbledon. Great little branch which needs fast charging battery trains.

Love that steam locomotive with a hedge growing out of it at Penmere, that did look awesome! I remember riding this line back in 2019 to clear the Maritime Line for track bashing but only rode to Falmouth Docks and back but seeing the stations along the way, you realise that I've missed out to take a look at them. Great video Jen. Really loving the Cornwall videos

Unusual but revolutionary. When it was unveiled a lot of folk thought "Huh why didn't we think of this before?"
Same filth, as 222 Meridians in EMR livery
And collapsed seats, sitting on it 2 hours (from London) make this experience more miserable.
I cannot recommend to use EMR before 810's come into service. They not love 222's anymore.
@stanley3647 Just travelled down to London on one today and the 222's are in a worse condition than any HST ever was. The seats are threadbare and filthy, and it's like padding is now and optional extra.
Cornwall is an amazing county with everything to explore including Newquay, Truro, Penzance, Lands End and of course the Eden Project near St. Austell.
I think we should all bring a bottle of glass cleaner whenever we ride the Cornish branch lines
All that beautiful scenery, and you can't see it properly because the train windows are so filthy

I'm used to trains, or metros running wrong rail as I live in Sunderland.
the trains appeared to be well used AND I noticed bikes at some of the stations. Feel better soon

Great video, Jen. I have a friend (Jen!) who lived for many years in Penryn and I’m familiar with this part of Cornwall - I remember all of us walking to Penmere station once as “it looks so pretty”!
Really good to see the trains so well used but they could do with new ones (3 coaches as well?) on that line!

When you get to St Germans, take a 5-minute walk down to the river for superb views of the railway viaduct over the river. And have a chat with Dave and Lizzy who live in the old station buildings on the up platform and who run the superb holiday homes (all ex railway carriages) located around St Germans station
Jen, you missed the best bit about Perranwell! At the Truro end of the platform is a water pump!
Also the fun thing is that the local settlement/village/hamlet is called "Perranwell Station" while Perranwell station is just called Perranwell.
I'm amazed to find Falmouth Town was renamed from The Dell in 1989, because I always remember it being The Dell when I first moved down to Cornwall in 2001. Maybe there was just some old signage left or people still used to refer to it by the old name back then.
It's had three names - Falmouth Town > Falmouth > The Dell (Falmouth) > Falmouth Town again.
If I ever bump into you irl by complete coincidence and circumstance, the coffee's on me! 😊
When Avanti trains divert from Crewe towards Stoke they go to the right hand side before the single line
Not only are the GWR trains dirty the class 150's are dark and dingy. At meast the Northern ones are light and a bit cleaner.
No train GWR is any good but LMS is a close second.
I reckon 30-ish "Jen points", including three "thumb points". Two good things about Falmouth Town, IMHO: the decorative fencing, and leaving. Lovely to see Bryn in this series, and enjoying his content, too. Lastly, it's not a time at Penryn, rather a proportion and it's up to us to figure out of what. Thanks again for your content, Jen!
150s are better than Pacers, but they're configured for suburban commuter service. They would be ideal for somewhere like the Maryhill branch (which currently uses Class 158s), but frankly lines like that ought to be electrified anyway. For Cornish branch lines a Class 156 might be an upgrade.

"Nobody should have to deal with a 150." REAL! I DISLIKE THEM HEAVILY! I don't even want to see one in preservation.
Ah you're on my home patch now. I lived in Falmouth for three years and rode this line (at least) three times a week as I worked in Truro. Back then it was one Wessex Trains Class 150 (2+2 seating with tables) running back and for, with sometimes a gap of over an hour and a half between trains, long before the revolutionary Penryn passing loop was introduced. Occasionally we got a 158 (back then branded Alphaline) or a 153. Back then Perranwell was always a stop, not just a request / occasional stop.
Penmere is relatively busy because a) there's a few holiday lets / AirBnBs around that area and b) it's the closest station to Henry Scott Tuke House, the older student halls of residence (and also thus the Moor end of town) which are just up the hill and then drop down Killigrew Street. I used to live on Melvill Road for my first two years so I always used Falmouth Town which as you mentioned was previously called The Dell.
Because I lived at the Moor end of town for my last year, I used to get on at F Town by walking down Arwenack Avenue and get off at Penmere with the bonus of passing a chip shop on the way home. After all, you've earned chips if you've walked up that hill.
None of the brown/chocolate GWR new "heritage" signing was around when I lived there, that all arrived later. The Penmere Platform and Perranwell classic old wooden signs were extant though back in the day.
While technically it's cheaper to travel Falmouth Town to Truro than it is to travel Falmouth Docks to Truro, in practice guards will let you board a Docks-bound train at Town to stop onboard and then go back on yourself, which is handy if a) you're early for your train and b) it's raining.
Not sure without looking at the modern day timetable, but back in the day the last train off the Docks used to go through Truro and terminate at Par, which meant it was one of the only Falmouth trains to not use Platform 1 at Truro.
I still get down there at least once a year fortunately. Love the place. Wish I could live there sometimes.
The turbos could replace the 150s but there need to be more long distance diesels/battery/???
It will be interesting to see how well the ex Viva Rail trains run on GWR.

My partner was not impressed with the class 150 train, when we explored the Riviera Line in August, Great video and lovely shots of the sea.
150's are not bad for short commute journey, wide doors are great for exchanging passengers on stations.
And a lot of varietes: 2 or 3 coaches... or 150/2 variation, which can be joined as 4 coach, "fully walkable" train
Bad points?
- age (so set must be refubished and well maintained)
- weak engine
- no aricon, but TfW 158's are running without AC as well on Pwlhelli route, and in 158's windows cannot be open.

They are about the same age
but don't have the step
which is what killed the pacers
finally.
They did their job, but they're just not fit for purpose in 2023. Passenger experience on them is awful

Can I just say regarding the Class 150s I feel that the gauntlet for "worst train in the UK" has been passed on from the Class 142 and 143 Pacers. People blame them because they're just as old and the like but I feel that it should be at the other end of the spectrum as I personally think that the 195s are AWFUL
I think the only people who like Class 150s are drivers. They are horrible places to be for passengers, I find the engine noise to be unbearable
