  • Here's the northbound leg of the Sand Hills Open Road Challenge we did this weekend. AMXess also won the mile shootout - a measurement of consistency over the standing mile. We ran 147.3, 147.3 and 147.0 in our three measured runs!

I grew up running these roads in a 56' Chevy, never dreaming that someday people would actually end up coming from all over the country to do so. Although I thought it would make sense! Hwy 27 from Ellsworth to Gordon was a crazy run. Lost an axle bearing in a Ford 9" (big bearing!) on that run once. Lost brakes and wondered what was going on until I saw my axle and tire go flying.

I did this in 1996... out on a country rd. a friend of mine had a 1995 mustang GT 5.0 he ran at 135 mph I had a 1981/half Monte Carlo it had a 350 bored over 30 and we were on a 20 miles of country road.he followed me and he said he was holding at 135 mph couldn't go any faster because the governor kept kicking in. I guess it took me about 15 min to get across 20 miles..I think I was running close to top speed of 165 mph.awesome run...
