I can't thank you enough for this wonderful tutorial! I bought this set of three about a year and a half ago. Finally! Now I know how to use them correctly. Thank you so very much. I truly appreciate you sharing your expert advice.
I bought a set of wide hem presser feet like this through Amazon. They came with no instructions. I found a video which was some help, but after trying it about twelve times, I was ready to give up. Then my husband found this tutorial. I watched it several times and then tried it again. This Tutorial answered several questions and showed me what I was doing wrong. I just finished hemming three sides of a piece of material and had no problems at all.
Ahhh, thanks for this video tutorial. I just tried using my set of wide rolled hem feet and it was challenging. I certainly only got one roll and they weren't even. Sometimes it stitched on and sometimes off. Tips I got: 1. Start stitching a little before you roll it in, do a double roll. 2. Feed in the double roll, slowly 3. Move your needle over. This will work well for couching wide ribbons and doing decorative stitching in the middle.
Thank you. This is really helpful. I bought a rolled hem foot and six pieces turned up. I thought the little pieces were to be connected to the big pieces, making in total 3 presser foots. Then I saw your video and you explained it was 6 different sizes!
I still struggle in inserting the fabric through the rolled hem part. I did everything like you did. I wish you had a different camera view. Thank You .
I had to watch 3 videos to finally find yours, you demonstrated the most important parts. the beginning and ends are the tricky parts. Now I get it. I Also needed to know about going over previous hems Thank you!
What a great tutorial! I had no idea that this foot even existed, and it looks amazing! I am a lazy sewist and hate measuring and ironing hems before sewing them, so this looks fantastic!
Thank you so much Lisa. I am a completely lazy sewist too so this suits me perfectly! If you whip over them with a hair straightener after, you still get perfect pressed hems in a fraction of the time!
I know this is an old video but I wanted to thank you so much! I bought a set of 3 of these feet and didn't know how to use them. This will be a huge time saver! I just subscribed ☺️
Oh me, oh my I'm so excited! I just tried this out on difficult stretch fabric, mettalics to boot. I used a stretch needle, a lightning stich, followed your tips and voila, just perfect! Thanks again.
Hi Faery..pl tell me what is a stretch needle and a lightning stitch? I am comparatively new to stitching and i really dont know what u mean by it.thank u🙏🇮🇳
@@shubhragoswami9785 There are specialty sewing needles for our sewing machine the one I referred to is manufactured to do better with fabrics that have stretch to it, such as knit fabrics, swim and exercise ware
oops. sorry I was not finished answering but hit send by mistake.. A Lightning Stitch is a very small zigzag that allows for some stretch without brraking right away like a regular stitch could. Hope that helps.
You make it look so easy. No matter how many times I tried and how long I practiced, I hated every second of it. I was spending more time trying to make this work than just double-pressing the old fashion way. I really wanted this to work :(
It definitely takes a bit of practice, but as with all things sewing, what works well for one person isn't always the best way for another. There's so many different approaches that there's no right way of sewing things and that's half the fun I think x 😀
I really appreciate you showing me these tip especially at the end of the pants because I didn't know what to do and you were the only one showed me. Thanks again 😃
Thank you so much for this- as I was searching, I could only find videos of the thin rolled hem for sheer fabrics. This is just what I was wanting, and quickly found a set of feet in 6 widths online, which came today! Hope they work with my 1970’s Singer Fashion mate 360! It will be so nice to not have to premeasure, iron, and then feed myself! Your tips for starting, stopping, and going over seams, were very helpful, and as a Yank, I loved hearing your lovely accent, while learning😆. Thank you!
Thanks for a great tutorial. Seeing the problems and having them solved is always of great benefit as we can be prepared, and solve our own issues. Jess
I purchased 3 of these months ago and hadn't a clue how to use them. Thankyou so much for your tutorial I definitely will try them out soon. Have subscribed to your channel and look forward to some more tutorials with more sewing tips.
Great video. I had been trying to practice using the narrow hem foot but I think my fabric may have been too heavy because I had issues getting the fabric to feed thru the little slot. After watching your video, I now know that I should have been using a wide hem foot for the weightier cotton fabric that I was trying to practice on. I'll keep the narrow hem foot for really lightweight or sheer fabrics.
Brilliant! I’d bought a set of these and after the right pigs ear I made of using the half inch I’d given up on them 🙄 I now see where I was wrong - will try again tonight now, thanks! 😘
I found it helpful, but will have to practice on an extra pc of fabric. I will probably be. Back to this instruction again. Will keep it on next to me when at the machine. Thanks.
I found that most useful and helpful. I was having trouble with my one. You hit on all the important points. Thank you. Shall subscribe to see what more you get up to.
Question: how do you know the hem will be even? It looks as though when you folded the fabric over, you folded more over in some places. Will the foot even that out?
You're very welcome. They can be such a time saver, especially if you frequently make things with long hems like skirts and dresses or if you batch make clothes. I tend to use this foot then quickly run over them with hair straighteners after and the hem looks professionally finished in no time!
I too didn't know this foot existed but I would sooner use the iron and tape measure it's too fiddly for me and too much messing about but thank you so much for introducing us to a new foot
Absolutely, it's always great to know what's out there even if it's not something you'll use on your current projects. If I'm only doing something little I don't bother to use it but if I've got metres to hem it soon works out much quicker when you get the hang of it.
Thank you for this useful tutorial--I bought the 3-pc wide-hem set and could NOT figure out how to get started. Now I know not only how to start but how to end. Since I won't use these feet particularly often, and my brain is like a sieve, is there by any chance a WRITTEN set of instructions for me to have on hand?
Thanks for the tutorial, unfortunately mine kept going wonky, I think it the way I’m folding it in the foot. I’ll figure it out. Thanks so much for sharing!
Hi! Thank you so much for your tutorial. I followed your instructions and it worked super well! But I’m having troubles now... I’m using a wide hemming foot, but for some reason it doesn’t stitch straight 😳 It’s curving towards the side that is heavier (right). Do you know what’s happening and how I can fix it? (When I use a “normal” foot it stitches straight). Thank you!
Hello from the Philippines 👋i tried mine, at first it was sewing fine.. But eventually, it's sewing outside the edge of the folded fabric. So technically it's not sewing properly anymore.. i do not know what happened.. At first it was sewing smoothly and properly aligned, then all of a sudden.. It sewing outside already. What shall I do? Thanks
Just bought a set of six containing three narrow feet plus three wide. The narrow one I tried initially worked pretty well first time. The wide foot I tried next would not keep the fabric running true for more than a few inches. It would skew, bunch, untwist and go completely off the rails. After many attempts I was quite discouraged and disappointed, cursing the foot as another piece of disingenously produced Chinese tat that superficially resembles the real thing but isn't engineered to actually work properly. Then I watched this video, saw that the foot here looks identical to mine, yet meters of fabric romp effortlessly through the machine with good results. Hmmm... maybe I was too hasty blaming the Chinese on this occasion. I picked up some points of technique from the video and tried some lighter, more flexible fabric closer in quality to the one shown. This produced a vast improvement, not quite good enough to be confident using the foot on a project but sufficient for me to un-give-up and push ahead with this. Thanks very much for a helpful demonstration.
Thank you for this tutorial. I have been trying to use this foot on my machine but the top thread isn't picking up the bobbin thread when I use it. Do you have any idea what I may be doing wrong? Many thanks. Hila
The foot shouldn't make any difference to what the top thread and bobbin thread are doing as it is simply a guide for the fabric before it reaches the needle. I would say it is far more likely that the needle is bent or either top or bottom thread just needs rethreading. Or possibly the bobbin you have in is a plastic one that has started to slightly distort in shape. Feel free to email me if you haven't managed to fix it and I'll help you troubleshoot it.
Are you holding down both loose ends as you start? Some machines are awkward (mine for one) and if I don't hold both ends firmly for the first few stitches, the bottom one gets sucked back under and disconnects from the top thread, sounds like maybe that is what is happening to you?
+key55551 a 1/4 inch hemmer is usually a very narrow rolled hem foot. I'm not convinced that will give you enough space, so if I were you I'd experiment on some scraps.
Have you tried finger pressing the first bit of the hem to help it stay in place easier/adding a couple of stitches before putting it in? Maybe something like a toothpick would help you push the fabric in place if it's difficulty getting it in the guides that's more the problem.
More trouble than it's worth, based on this demo. It would be faster to fold over twice, press well, pin or clip, and sew close to the edge. The French seams make using the rolled edge foot awkward and untenable.
This looks like more work than quite a few do without an attachment. Also you double folded the hem before it went through the attachment the same as if you were not using an attachment. At the point when you removed the fabric from the attachment it looks like the hem may not have fed trough evenly.

Can his be used on double knit fabrics if you don’t have a overlock sewing machine?
I think double knit fabric is too thick for this rolled foot. That fabric doesn't fray. You don't have to overclock it

I have bought this but can't put the fabrics into this hem presser foot. I understood to need practice😩
Have you tried finger pressing the first bit of the hem to help it stay in place easier/adding a couple of stitches before putting it in? Maybe something like a toothpick would help you push the fabric in place if it's difficulty getting it in the guides that's more the problem.
I find steam ironing the first few inches in a double fold helps a lot, and I use an old blunt needle to push through
More trouble than it's worth, based on this demo. It would be faster to fold over twice, press well, pin or clip, and sew close to the edge. The French seams make using the rolled edge foot awkward and untenable.
The link says it's no longer there, are these feet available anywhere? And are 9mm available??? Please.
