I bought recently brand new Arona with 1.5 TSI 110kW dsg (mine have armrest) And I have few things to say about fuel consumption because 7.5L/100km seems really extreme.
I drove it home directly from dealership (330km - about 206 miles) through cities/highways and some country roads. I was driving normally (respecting speed limits) and at the end I end up with 5.7L/100km. Now after 5000km (3125 miles) its even better - especially on hot days in summer (28°C+).
I drive to work daily (68 km roundtrip - 2 cities and country roads) and on my way to work which is slightly downhill I can achieve 4L/100km (yes 4 flat) but mostly averaging 4.4L. On my way back (logically slightly uphill) 5L/100km averaging 5.5L.
I Can do about 700km (438 miles) on one small 40L tank.

So the BMW gets nice tree and woods backdrop, the arena gets a rain stained building and weeds backdrop. Noted.

I drive a base spec ibiza for a work car and the platform and interior is basiclly the same as the arona and I love it. Only thing missing for me in the base spec version we have is an arm rest. the FR trim looks to have a few little extra nicities too. The other work car is a higher spec Scala and while its a nicer place to be for longer drives because it has the turbo version of the TSI with a little extra grunt and an arm rest, I prefer the Ibiza for short trips because it's more fun and its an absolute doddle to park anywhere.

You can buy an add on arm rest £140 from seat , fit really easy

Have an FR sport. Nippy, handles well (yes you’re right about the steering wheel!). Rides surprisingly well on 18” wheels. Well made and I love it! Don’t get the armrest aspect though…I’ve had Picassos, a Toyota Verso, Tiguan R Line (all had armrests), as does my present Mazda CX5. Don’t miss it in the Arona tbh.

Great review Mark. Had one on hire a few weeks ago and the missing armrest was noted straightaway! Very mid-10s feel, but not in a bad way.

You’d want one for 30k all the same!

Bit of an early Yeti vibe with those fog lights. Gives it a unique face anyway.

I do like the little Arona, and I absolutely agree that I wish manufacturers would understand that sweet spot the buyers want with a bit of screen, and some physical buttons for infotainment, heating etc.
But I also agree that there are some annoying omissions. It seems increasingly common that modern cars are viewing rear armrests as a "luxury" item. When did that happen? My dad's 1980's Cortina had one. Come on guys! I even had to pay extra for the privilege of a rear armrest on my BMW 1 series. At least it has one in the front, unlike the Arona. Sorry, I do like the Arona, but the lack of front armrest is just unforgivable.
Also their range is a bit annoying. I would have wanted the Xperience Lux for the slightly better interior and armrest, but I also wanted the 1.5 engine. They don't do that combination! Arrgh. So you can have performance without an armrest and nicer interior, or a nice interior with the more weedy engine. Some of us do longer journeys and would want the beefier engine. Shame they don't offer that combo.

Great review Mark.Fuel consumption is not acceptable. If it was a hybrid it would be a better buy costing more of course

Agree with all of the armrest comments and don't understand why its omitted. It would rule it out for me. Its cousin the TCross seems a far more substantial car althought with a far more substantial price.

The economy will improve vastly when the car is properly broken in. After let"s say 4-5000km you will easily get below 6 litres! Even around 5 if you're careful.

Good old VW . Take a 15 year old design add a few " new bits of tech " and charge 30K. Still paying back that dieselgate

Mark... Why not simply buy an Ibiza FR? Or Polo R Line? Or a 208? Or Clio?
What is it with these " jacked up" ( seudo mini SUVs) ugly as sin and plainly nonsense! Keep small hatchbacks alive! We've lost the best in the shape of the Fiesta, which hatchback next?
