Motivations were something I thought about a lot when creating my character Jarakio. At first I wanted him to just be cool and confident and accept his powers like nothing but- that got scrapped immediately. At this point now Jarakio starts off powerless, essentially wanting to find some purpose for his life in a world populated by elemental humans and creatures. Once it's revealed he does have powers, a wide array of them actually, his motivation becomes understanding the role he must play with access to most of the world's elemental powers.

My main character is a villain so it’s different from a hero’s motivation. His motivation to be a villain is bc he doesn’t believe in love. He loses everyone he calls family, so it scars his heart. Hatred takes over him and he only follows the gang of bandits he’s involved in. In fact due to reality those that are seen as good or heroes r really evil and wretched themselves. He sees the “good/heroic” as the same ppl who commit crimes. In order to have ur will, u have to destruct someone else’s will. Btw he’s a preteen once he acknowledges himself as a villain. Not tryna say too much unless u guys ask but yeah. His motive is to find a place in the world that he belongs, as an individual that feels rejected by society for being different. He has no family. The gang of bandits take him as family and that’s how his growth occurs. They’re the only family he has.

Man this is crazy. I've been reading Manga in Theory and Practice for the last week, wasn't expecting to see you pull out a literal page from that book in this video.
As for me, latest character idea I've been thinking is following the rival with a chip on his shoulder after his confrontation with the typical main character opens his world view, Neji or Gaara after they faced off against Naruto, or Tien from Dragon Ball. Start from that very moment of revelation as the initial hook of the series, then flash back to what led to that moment for the initial first arc and the rest of the series could be about what they do from there. (It's a rough outline at best right now)
The reason for this is because I've seen lots nemesis based series lately and the "heroes" are often mistreated to paint the Demon King and their allies in a better more competent light, which I don't entirely agree on but I like the idea of placing focus on a different character of relative importance to the story in this type of setting. Rivals are often treated as the hero's other half, you can't get their full story without the other, so why not follow the atypical other's half perspective from day 1 and still make both interesting. They don't have to be boring, aloof loners either, we could endear him to the audience for his prodigious abilities by starting out as an Overdog disguised as an Underdog like Yuno from Black Clover or Souma from Food Wars, but have his rival be the typical hardworking Underdog.
Both have to have strong motivations though and I have yet to settle on one yet which brought me here.

As to answer your question about what I would like as a strong motivation for a series.
A useless man having an epiphany and decides to turn his life around one day. You know, someone who willingly squandered his potential and took easy paths in life, played that out and realized that my lifestyle could be in trouble so I got to do something and starts his ascent out of necessity, but continues to rise not out of obligation, but self discovery instead. Hits a few road blocks because change can be extremely hard and it's so easy to slip back and lose the progress you made. In other words, a Shounen journey based on some real life success stories.

She was raised in a forest and has never left that forest her whole life . Unfortunately, the way how I set up my universe it’s meant to constantly suppress akayle from exploring and being a normal girl having normal friends . The world constantly tests her loyalty and faith, challenging her to rise up above everything while protecting the once’s she loves . The only way to become free is to become strong and the journey to become strong is not a fair one .
She also has a brother who idolized her bravery and talents. But this brother is highly timid and barely has a voice of his own. He’s often found listening to people, not following his gut which can lead to problems if you don’t have the right people around you.
And the brothers best friend is just a happy competitive boy who loves to play . After he meets akayle, he proclaims himself as her rival . He’s always happy and optimistic, but tends to be a space gaze, and gets to caught up in moments which makes him seem like he’s not all there in his head .

It's a work in progress but my character, Taylor, was troubled by his mother's dying wish for him to be special and surrounded by people he loves. At first he wishes to fulfill her wish but doesn't know how to, then he becomes someone who people come to depend on to end a potential war. He wishes to end the war and protect people but selfishly wants to fulfil his mother's wishes.

I’m writing a series of comics/manga where the main character’s motivation is to achieve an ancient prophecy, which may or may not exist, that would make all people see each other as equals, because his late mother hated how cruel and darwinistic the world was, so her dying wish was to see this equality before it was too late. After her death, the main character drives to be the one to achieve, or at least help achieve in some way, this true equality so everyone can live free however they want, kinda like Sano. However in this world where only the strong survive, my main character is actually the weakest person in the story, so there would be this sense of growth as he travels around the world beating villains and overcoming obstacles. Equality is the biggest theme in the story because it’s really important to me. I made sure there was a diverse cast of characters to keep that theme. I was also inspired by different religions and cultural practices, and especially by your series Apple Black, can’t wait for volume 3 man. The other two volumes were awesome and I’m sure the next one will be too.

That's awesome. I wish I could read yours. Hope your execution will be great and subtle as you want it be. I also want to make manga/comic series, where MC gets into a terrible accident, and is scarred ever since. His primary motivation basically is paranoia or just fear, and unwillingness for others to experience what he went through. He puts on a facade, as to not worry others and takes all on himself, but will end in him being broken.

In my story there are two protagonists, the motivation of one is curiosity and the other wants to get back to his wife after she ran away from him. Generally they are both initiated into the supernatural world, one who is a writer and a reporter stumbled upon a witches' sabbat through a fellow poet's artistic experiment, the encounter was fatal but Gofrins, as the first protagonist is called, managed to get away with his life. Because of the encounter he could not find peace as there are many questions in his head. He eventually decides to explore the new world he has discovered in order to understand reality and pass on his knowledge to humanity. The second protagonist was brainwashed by a witch into thinking they were a happy married couple for years, but because of Gofrins the spell stopped working and the witch run away leaving the second protagonist alone. Now they both travel the world to describe and later also neutralise supernatural anomalies, but also to find a witch and for the second protagonist to make himself knowledgeable, strong and therefore worthy of her and capable of bringing her to "the right side"

However, when the worldwide conflict came to a conclusion his body began to yearn for something more, the thing he hated most but could not escape "DEATH". The only thing that stands between him and his goal to cleanse himself of all the weakness his creator embedded into him. Is a simple promise he made to an old friend that to his surprise would last generations on end.

I liked this! I'm slowly getting a better idea for my character...
Open constuctive criticism or ideas wanted!
My character is a 19 year old fire dragon halfing (in a celtic HTTYD type of world) who was left by her adventureous parents (not sure if they are dead or what) with a village of vikings when she was like 2. She grew up not really liking where she was because she didn't really grow well and she didn't have a purpose. When she finds her parents old maps and journals she discovers a sort of treasure map and type of prophecy talking about a team of element holders who are supposed to come together to stop the tyrant ruler who has started a war with multiple areas in this country causing tears and just lost of destruction.
She ends up going on a mission to build this team, unlock their powers and "save the day"
    MY MAIN CONCERN:
She finds a romantic interest but I'm concerned about that their troupe is too much like that crazy magic girl thing where the girl is so bubbly and sweet and is USED to transform the quiet brooding guy to live life.... Because that's incredibly close to what it's become 😅it's not necessarily a BAD thing for all that to happen but I want more depth and more push in it to make it more interesting. Also I don't want my character to get swept away and lose her whole purpose.
Overall the fact that I'm writing this in a group makes things more chaotic but I still have way more fun than I do by myself but i definitely still want to make my character BETTER and grow a lot more and I need help because I'm running out of idea.
    Thanks!

    Meanwhile my original character :
This character was inspired by Kamelot album "The Ghost Opera"
A human given a Godly power by God. God wants to test the human race, because the human race are supposed to be the most perfect creature God had created. At first, the character was consumed by ego, but become more mature and never used his Godly power except when he really must to. God continued to give tests to him. He endured it patiently. He sometimes lamenting the fact that humankind is so overpowered and hypocrite despite being the most perfect creature.
That's the beginning of my main character. What do you guys think?
The life of the main characters is based off the songs from the album
    1. Solitaire + Rule the World : The main character gained Godly power and lost his mind.
    2. Ghost Opera : He's also an aspiring singer.
    3. The Human Stain : How depraved is the human race, despite being the most perfect creature.
    4. Blucher : The main character missed his sister.
    5. Love you to Death : Despite being forbid by God, the main character used his power to heal her sister's terminal illness.
    6. Up Through the Ashes : He has some friends, and they betrayed him and condemned him. Now nobody believes the main character.
    7. Mourning Star : The main character was damned, mourning star can be translated to the opposite of a shooting star. You make wishes from the shooting star, but it's futile to make a wish from a mourning star.
    8. Silence of the Darkness : The main character sinks into despair, even with his Godly power, he left alone where everyone hates him. Even if he make them love him (he can) it's so unjust. Humans must do it on their own.
    9. Anthem : The main character's vow on never giving up.
    10. Eden Echo : He wants to go to heaven to be with the Gods.
    11. Season's End : he promised to meet his sister again.
    12. The Pendulous Fall : Never giving up and take the chance no matter how small it is.

I plan alot of plots, but I always end up coming back to this concept:
The main character would be young, and he would hate being forced to do things because of his age. He questions everything and suffers with depression. I want this concept, because I know how to make a character's depression and anxiety feel REAL because of my own experience. But anyway, the protagonist wouldn't be able to find motivation, and he would be forced to do things that he didn't like. His motivation in life would be to find motivation, in a sense. He wishes death upon himself but can't do it because he thinks about it this way, "I know I will always have the option to give up, so why should I? I should continue with the stress and pain and if I truly never find happiness, I always have a backup plan." He already knows how that road ends, so he has no real need to go down it, and instead forces himself to find motivation to never want to kick the bucket, while ensuring its always an option.
Again, this character "plot" sticks with me alot, and I can't figure out why

My protagonist is just like me, doesn’t completely understand himself, blames himself for everything, and he wants revenge in order to revert the world to its original peaceful state

I love the series overall but the thing about bleach was that ichigo lacked motivation, he had no goals. Just a temporary one for each arc maybe but nothing to look forward to in the end.
