@jayemm another great review. But you must cut the section out about your history of Porsche and put it up as a separate video on its own. It will go viral amongst the Porsche community I promise you. It was accurate enough, tons of wonderful humor, weaved into it, it’s a classic. !! Maybe call it hint of a new series “JayEmm Shorts,” or “history, by Proff Emm.”
I second this idea 💡
He could upload shorts of his more controversial pieces so his popularity will grow.
Yes, but if he only pronounced the company‘s name correctly…
Wow this was the LONDON UNDERGROUND TUBE MAP OF PORSCHE CARS but not as simple.
Agreed. The intro is unnecessary for the enthusiasts, we know the story. Just get to the review! 😅
A masterpiece of a revue! The way you introduced this car by revisiting the entire history of this particular range of porsche’s line up, but more than that, the way you just sumurised it… « would I be willing to sell my soul for it? No… ». What a great car review!!!
This car can look so good when correctly specced
Was just thinking that myself. Doesn't suit Banana custard yellow.

An excellent history of Porsche from the point of view of us, the customers. Porsche needs to listen.
Well apparently they do .. Look at the current lineup
Too many errors and innacuracies
You should have put that exhaust microphone on top of the intake inside the cabin, that car is all about the intake noise.
A manual 981 GT4 RS would have been absolute perfection.
Apparently it has some kind of electronic exhaust sound he turned off.
I have a feeling this car has a soundaktor in cabin, I know the intake is literally behind the drivers ears, but it still sounds too artificial from the inside
@@antonis5999it’s all genuine noise from the engine and intake. No fake gizmos
I was about to write this. This car is pure intake noise. External exhaust is just accessory to that fact.
I think this maybe the best car youtube review channel, great enthusiasm and character. cl65 video was hilarious when you gave an example of how the turbos sounded. Keep it up . (dont agree with the cls55 opinion though) Lol
I REALLY appreciate your takes on cars Jay, it's truly as easy as breathing watching your videos!
I'm especially proud that you get access to these unicorns and help us take off our rose-tinted glasses for a moment, look a little deeper and see the bigger picture 🧐
I've never met a reviewer that speaks as thoroughly and captivatingly as you and I look very forward to your GT3RS coverage.
Great review and summary of Porsche’s history related to the Cayman. It looks an amazing car but the problem is there’s so few of them. Difficult to get excited about a car you never see, that’s so inaccessible and inevitably the few that are around will be locked away on garages. Do you think there will ever be a turbo one (like the gt2)?
You personify modern youngsters, living to watch others property go by.
@@johnsmith1474 maybe as a car fan he wants to see cars on the road? Just a thought 😂
@@johnsmith1474 I don't think there's nothing wrong with it. Owning special cars does come with its own responsibility. Sharing it with younger enthusiastic audiences. If we want these cars to survive the future, wouldn't it be better to let public see and experience them so they understand why these cars are special, rather than hiding it away?
I know firsthand how these kind of cars can change someone else's day. Back in the olden days I often found myself going home from school wanting to kill myself (bullies and all that shit). But a sight of a Ferrari 360 Spider in Grigio Titanio or even just a yellow 987 Boxster is enough to made my day and forgot what happened back at school. This is why as a content creator (car-related stuffs) today, I want to show to everyone that these cars exists not just as a willy-waving exercise but as an object of desire, something that can make someone else's day brighter. None of that is achievable if the car is just chilling inside a hermetically-sealed garage guarded by 10 SAS members.
Thanks!
Thanks Peter!
I've read in other articles that Porsche said they would build the combustion engine cars for 2-years in parallel with the EV variant coming out. The mid engine internal combustion engine in the Cayman may still have one last gasp of breath. Haven't driven a 911 but once I put some camber into the front end of the 718 with bigger wheels front and rear, the 718 is way more adjustable at the track. Love my 718 S!
A beautiful video for a beautiful car! *Stunning opening shot with the rotating camera on the hood..* looov it! Once again top notch wordsmith narration with that perfect recipe of clever humour mixed with vehicle stats and inside info. Just love these reviews. Best on the planet.
It's a simply majestic car! I've had the pleasure. No video or audio clip does the sound justice. So visceral; so close to your ears. This is going to go down in history as one of THE GREATEST GT cars and one of the greatest sports cars the world has seen. Period
Despite what everyone says, the 718 is a GREAT car. And the GT4RS, an instant classic. But yes, I'm not paying that money for any car, no matter the badge. Great film!👍
My God what a sound! Nothing beats Petrol coursing through the multiple cylinders in a big engine with a seriously growly exhaust…
Very good review. I have this car as of two weeks ago. I paid list and I have 4 track days booked. The fact that I was someone who was going to drive it as such was one of the reasons I got an allocation. No dodgy deals, have just bought 4 cars from Porsche previously over the last 6 years, so a reasonable customer. I dare say were I in the market for a "special" Ferrari I would have had to jump through many, many more hoops and spent many, many more pounds. For me, this is the perfect drive to and then onto the track car, the perfect Sunday morning in the Brecon Beacons car: its combines emotion, engineering precision and in the right conditions, epic high-speed fun from an engine that I genuinely believe is one of the all-time greats. It's not a car for every day and Preuninger did not design it as such. Sell mine? No chance. I'm having far too much fun for that.

What a fantastic and comprehensive review . James is fast becoming my favourite car journalist , the quality of script is of the very highest order. 👏 👏
Always detailed and enjoyable reviews and I always like how we all see the world differently - which is highlighted when I watch many of your Porsche reviews - different perspectives and all that. For example, your comment about the gt4rs interior lacking colour and comparison references to the 430 about how special that looks. To me Ferrari is like that kid at school, perfect teeth, perfect hair, perma tan from winter on the ski slopes and summer in daddy’s place in St Tropez, he’s popular for sure but do you really like him that much? He’s just a bit me me me to ever be a true friend. Ferrari is the ‘fur coat and no knickers’ car - attractive but no class. I see a Ferrari and smile, looks lovely, sounds lovely, but my heart doesn’t ache for one. That’s a car for other people, the Rolex brigade (you know the sorts, some people buy a Rolex because it truly is an amazing watch, many buy it because it’s a Rolex. Rolex screams ‘look at me’ and so does Ferrari - me me me. I look at the gt4rs interior and see beauty, class, form and function. It’s Tudor or Omega to Ferrari’s Rolex. The component parts aren’t just there for aesthetics, there’s a purpose which might even damage the aesthetics, but that is beauty in its own way. It’s not me me me, it’s you you you. It stirs my soul like a Ferrari never does. Different opinions are of course a great thing - if we all wanted to marry the same person there’d be one very popular individual and a hell of a lot of very lonely people.
That's a lot of typing to say you like grey carpet.
An outstandingly thoughtful and informative, quintessential automotive review. Thankyou Jay.
I've not driven an Emira, I'm sure it's wonderful, but there is no way on God's earth I'd have one over a GT4RS, should the opportunity present. And change gear yourself man! Loved the 911 history lesson. The Intercooler podcast has done something on that in recent weeks and is also worth checking out. And I'm sure for 200K you could get an Aventador, which would be a great idea, until it needs something doing to it. Can we have some more 430 content please.
About six weeks into ownership of my 4RS so far... I agree with many of your points, but on the PDK aggressiveness, etc, I think the car just begs to be driven in manual mode, motorway or not. Especially with the shift lever and/or the paddles. You don't stop shifting a manual Porsche just because you are on a mellow road? Same is true for the 4RS, it's how it works best.
Can i ask, did you order new from Porsche? And what did you pay ? Do you plan on selling it at some point
Thanks JayEmm! A very fair review - I think you nailed it with your comments regarding the excitement factor of cars as well developed as this - they are so quick and have such reserves of road-holding that getting anywhere near their limits on the road is an exercise in frustration and antisocial to boot. The tradeoffs in civility probably aren't worth it unless you regularly do track days where I imagine the GT4RS would turn out to really come alive and be truly exciting.
"Escaped at the end of the Mulsane Straight" is terrific description/bit of writing!
£200,000 is a bonkers price for this. Loved the history and the conclusion.
Nice review, but…. James, you have to understand, none of the cars that you mentioned in the same price range are able to be pounded on a track day in and day out and survive. I see them all the time, pretty much every weekend I’m at a track day, The Ferraris and Lambos are over-heating their brakes or ending up in a cloud of steam. Taking it relatively easy on a British B-road is a really, really, really bad way to review the GT4RS. The lads at EVO and Harry did the same mistake. Of all the cars you mentioned as an alternative, they will be more charismatic on a B-road, but when you’re barreling down into Turn 17 at Sebring, charisma ain’t on your mind, a lightweight, precise, technical machine with plenty of power is what you need. The issue with some reviews of the GT4RS is akin to saying a Lotus just isn’t that thrilling because its not a good off-roader because you like off-roading and you have a lot of dirt roads near you. You’re using the wrong environment to test a track car. The GT4RS is a track car that you can drive on smooth public roads, rather than a road car that you can take to the track. It’s character comes out on a track. I think the GT4RS is for a specific sub-set of enthusiasts, those that are on a track regularly. It’s a cold, harsh, technical, precise thing. You know, a race car. You’re expecting it to be a charismatic road car, which it’s not intended to be. Exchange your string-back, 1960’s leather driving gloves for a pair of Nomex OMP gloves, a helmet instead of a flat cap, and you’ve got it. From that standpoint, the cars you mentioned are overly dramatic, overly unreliable for the job at hand. That job is to get around the track, as quickly as possible, consistently lap after lap, without a mechanical setback, for an entire day. It’s a racing athlete’s car, not a punters (well, unless you’re a punter who’s play-acting at being a track star). It’s the STIG’s car, not Jeremy’s.
Superb review. I think you summed up what I feel looking at a car like this (reversing your 430 analogy), better in all the ways you can measure but worse in all the ways you can’t, in short it talks more to the head than to the heart.
😂 😂 omg that's rich, drive one and you wont say that.

Haggis and mushy peas for you Sir! Two people buy this car: the cars and coffee crowd, and someone who uses it as it was designed for: a track beast! Thanks for the review.
You sir are the most quintessential motor journalist bar none.
You're too kind
Well, I'm relieved that I don't have to cancel my order, given it's already built and scheduled to arrive in the first part of June! So, thanks for that! Even though the Ferrari and Lamborghini posters were all over the wall when I was a kid, the reality is that they are too shouty for me as well as not delivering the reliability and daily usability of the Cayman/Boxster platform. Perhaps my GT4 RS will be an exception but it WILL be driven on a near daily basis, mostly on roads and occasionally on the track. As for Lotus, the Emira definitely looks the part of a supercar (which to me is a bit of a disadvantage albeit one that I might be able to overlook) but I live in fear of the reliability of it, particularly in light of the weak dealer network in the US. I wish it were different. I hope it will be different this time...but hope isn't much of a strategy.
It's got a Toyota V6, what more do you want?!
I can only imagine how much over list you've had to pay to secure a slot. It's just not worth it at that price.
@@hdmk213 Didn't pay a dime over list. It pays to have a relationship with a quality dealership that's all. I don't flip cars and they know it. I drive them and when it's time to part with them, they get sold through the same dealership again.
As to the Toyota V-6, it's probably going to be reliable but engines are far from the only things that break. It's also still a pretty vanilla engine for such a special car.
As a 928GTS owner this is the only current model that really interests me.

I actually met an engineer who developed a 981 prototype with the GT3 engine and manual transmission... called it a 981 touring. Tested it in Europe and Los Angeles for over 100K miles and raced it the VLN as well
That would have been very cool
Great review as always, but let’s be honest, this car should be tested on race track where you could use its potential. Also, this is a car, where due to sound regulations you should focus on cabin sound, as it sounds much better from the inside due to intake location. Many owners, who track their GT Porsches, opt for steel brakes - they are good enough even for race application with proper pads and cheaper to service. For street use CF disks would be preferred. If we talk about new cars, then there is no real alternative mid engine sportscars with such engine and aero package. As Porsche sportscar owner and PC long time member I can assure you, that most of the GT4RS target customer base (at least in Europe, where I come from) will not consider any of those cars as realistic alternative, even if on paper those are supercars and this is just a sportscar.

I enjoyed watching your videos so far and I love the effort you put in your videos
I like the difference your commentary brings. You spend a lot of time actually driving the car on backroads which relates to more of how I drove. I say how I drove as I have since moved out of Connecticut where I drove my Porsche 993 Cab rarely getting above 4th gear over great backroads for 10 years, roads probably similar to yours. I'm not interested in racing a car, just a great backroads car. I especially like your comparison of the GT4RS to the new Lotus Emira. Those who only read and comment without ever owning a great road car will most likely have no idea how you can say that, but I do.
End of the line for the Cayman. Agree Porsche missed a golden opportunity to dump the rear engine layout. Ruf CTR3 and Clubsport showed how easily the Cayman platform could have been adapted for hypercar power. It is more Porsche than any current Porsche will ever be.
Great review, so well balanced and honest. Keep up the great work 👍👍
Porshce actually uses really good quality leather(top grain) in the upper door trim. Get up close and you can see the pores of the leather. Complaining the quality by simply knocking at it... One can say the interior doesn't feel nice enough to match the price tag of the car that sells more than 200k USD.
If Porsche added some padding it would feel a lot better but would add weight.
@@2moke2creen what's, lets say 40kg extra on a 1400kg car? Weight savings on road cars are kinda ridiculous
@@XavierGoncalves89 in that case why not add more sound deadening which would make it more street friendly but loses performance?
Because a dedicated sports car based on a race car series should sacrifice absolute comfort for lightness since it's not meant to be daily driven.

Sheer dumb luck!
A really good review, and brief history lesson :) I particularly like how you're constructively critical about these so called amazing cars, as so many journo's just won't do this, they miss out criticisms. Being a long time Porsche GT owner I see this alot. Just one thing though James, please could you record the noise better INSIDE the cabin. The shots you do to show the noise don't work at all, no one will hear this car with their head stuck to the outside bodywork near the exhaust with all the wind noise too, it's not representative of anything. You need to get set your mic's up inside the cabin to record the ambient noise as that's representative of what the driver will hear. And as you know, GT cars including this one sound incredible as you're driving.
Those men who smoked and had facial hair made the first Porsche, the open 356#1, mid engined, but the requirement for 2+2 seating meant putting the engine behind the rear axle. So the second one, a coupe, was the 356 as we know it.
What eventually became the first GT4 was something I, as exterior designer of the 981 range really wanted to do and persisted in pushing. I kept hanging pictures of it on the wall, but was always told to cover them up before senior engineers walked the studios. There was always the feeling that the 911 should always be unchallenged in performance on track.
One day, the head of the race department, responsible for engineering all the "GT" cars walked in unannounced, saw the renderings and championed it through to production. Thank you Herr Christensen! And Herr Piech, who said to let the mid engine car fight it out with the 911. Of course, we then only had 6 months to do all the special exterior parts so that it could be introduced before the 981s were facelifted into 718s.
We did it though and the GT4 (and related Boxster Spyder) established itself as part of the range....
The 718 facelift of the 981 was initially disappointing, but the GT4 did finally get the GT3 motor it always deserved.
This car is why I like the Emira so much more…
more worrying to own 😅
Personally I would get the Emira only if I could find a good dealer.
It's cheap for a one reason or another.
Emira is what the mid 2010's NSX should have been; not the fastest thing (NSX never was), but in terms of feel there's little else that compares.

I own a GT4 RS and have already driven it far more miles than most other owners or auto journalists will. It’s my daily driver. The car definitely is NOT too harsh / stiff. In fact, when just cruising, it’s unbelievably calm and compliant, even when in sport mode. This car is incredibly ‘daily-able’ (if that’s a word). That said, I sold a 718 GT4 6-spd manual when I acquired the GT4 RS, and that GT4 was a better overall car for the money and more fun to drive due to the manual nature of it.
Awesome to have owned both. The manual does it for me.
Don’t know how it’s done, but the camerawork is just fabulous. 👏
Do you mean the opening shot?
@@sportzntouring Yes, the opening shot was particularly good, but overall the camerawork is excellent 👍

And no manual means I'll keep my 981 GT4. They can keep the incoming counter top appliance as well.
Having owned a 981 GT4 previously, as well as several other GT and turbo Porsches, I was hooked on this car and had a deposit in 2-3 years before release with my dealer. Once it was time to order, though, the markup from mine as well as other US Porsche dealers was ridiculous. Paying the same price as a pre owned 720S? Seriously? I instead bought a beautiful GT silver one owner 991.2 GT3 with 2K miles with buckets, PCCB’s etc for a very fair price due to the collector car price correction in effect now. Love it. The overcharging of cars to faithful enthusiasts by Porsche and others is a shame
Wait, you were asked to pay a premium on a car you were ordering NEW?
Haha, reasonable price. GT4RS's are going for $280K US to start here in the US. The 992 GT3's are going for $250K with a manual.
Just prepare a huge buffer fund for the multiple front diffusers that youll need to keep replacing every time you go over a hump.
I’ve had my GT4 for 2 weeks now and it is an issue. Not so bad with speed humps, more so with steep hills. Multi-storey car parks are out of the question. I’ve scraped my front splitter a bit but it’s all underneath so you can’t see it.
Replacement cost is £225 which I don’t think is that bad.
The RS comes with a front axle lift option which I wish Porsche offered on the GT4 but they decided not to.
Absolutely love my GT4 though. It’s an incredible car.
I've had mine for over two years and always scrape entering and leaving my condo. Still no issues even appearance-wise
£1033, for a Porsche Cayman GT4, sign me up. Slight slip of the tongue there on the fully loaded price. Good review though.
Love it! Although I’m not sure about it being “shockingly reasonable” in terms of list price. I suppose it’s all about perspective.
Great point about the price. No Porsche limited numbers car is going to sell at list price to the open market so it needs to be compared with stuff far and above. Where you would be hard pressed to choose the Porsche over it's contemporaries. Great video.
Be cool to revisit this car when the weather warms up
935 was a successful racecar in the 1970's with an engine, drive train layout, and passenger cabin that was derived from a 911. That meant instant street cred that no 928 could ever enjoy. Porsche was always going to favor the 911 and the rear engine layout.
What’s the total price at 30:19? 😅
One thousand, three hundred and thirty three, five hundred and forty nine 😂
Surely the GT4RS must surely be a collectors item surely.
There has never been one before and there will never be one after.
At around 5:30 as you are talking about how they wouldn't let the 914 approach the 911, mention should be made of the 914/8. Sure -- only 2 were made but... well... wow!
7:01 The 968 is not the successor to the 924, it's the successor to the 944 (which is the successor to the 924). Porsche was going to call it the 944 S3 but the design had 80% significantly modified or entirely new parts, so they decided to make it an entirely new model...the 968. The 968 was the last front engine Porsche until the introduction of the Cayenne in 2003. I personally own the GT4 RS, 992 GT3, 992 GT3 Cup, and my 992 GT3 RS arrives next month. My Macan S will soon be replaced by the Cayenne Turbo GT...the fastest SUV on the Nürburgring.
And now I own a Spyder RS as well. It's an even more visceral driving experience than my GT4 RS, but my GT4 RS is better on the track.
I own a 2020 718 Spyder and love it. I would prefer the automatic roof I had on my previous Boxster however what can you do?
I have a 718 GT4 and am sort of worried I feel similarly. It's so immensely competent and capable and runs rings around my old 996 Turbo in the twisty stuff yet something is still missing. It just feels like the car has no sense of humor. It's a serious car for serious drivers. Perhaps it just needs an alignment and some hotter exhaust link pipes to wake it up, but as stock it's a gorgeous thing with so many positives yet falls kind of flat in some ways especially at mundane speeds where the older cars still feel an occasion and have steering that gives you a real granular feedback of what is happening in the front tires.
Next time you make it to the U.S., make sure to hit up Rick DeMan and drive one of his 4.5 cars.
12:04 Not quite. The 718 is technically the model name of the 982 generation, a tip of the hat to the light racing cars of the late 50s and early 60s, which were the original 718s.
Interesting piece of history: the 914-6 GT was faster than the highest spec 911 around any circuit.
Le Mans 1970. The Sonauto 914-6 qualified with pro drivers in 4.30, the fastest 911 in 4.22. It won for sure on its first outing, but wasn't faster round one lap.
Hello ! Great and honest video as usual! Thanks you very much for that! Could you tell me what do you think about this gt4rs compare to an exige v6 410/420 ? Thanks for your reply
The judge dredd impression was fenomenal ❤
Great review. Little tech nerd note, I'm getting moire flashing from that jacket in 1080p.
28:49 I own a GT4 RS with the Weissach package and they don't do the titanium cage on the US models. My 992 GT3 RS, with the Weissach package, arrives next month and I don't think they are doing the carbon fiber roll cage in the US with that package...but at least I will get a roll cage (I think).
You overshooted a bit with the full Porsche history.. that was a bit long.. Otherwise, good job as always
The chap who wrote for EVO about owning a fleet for driving days always changed the ceramics for steels when he first bought a car, given the cost of replacements on track - could be why the ceramics are an option if other owners also do this.
That Porsche history was so brilliant, I made my son watch it. 👍🏾👍🏾
hat's possibly the best impression I've ever heard of Judge Fed.
I agree, the RS is a bit too stiff. I wish it would have a soft setting. The car is not a street car, it’s a track tool, and not for all tracks, mostly for even roads. There the car is in its element. Once you know what you are getting into, the car is great. If you are just to life at the track, the GTS is the sweet spot and you should stick to it. Make no mistake, at the right track, this is a weapon that can go toe to toe with any exotic
Great breakdown👌🏽
So, to sum up, it's so exclusive and special that the speculators and museum-piece merchants have grabbed almost every one and the potential price premium of a nearly-unused car is such that almost none will ever get properly used. Just like 95% of the rest of the FerLamboPorkLaren breed. They're all so rare on the roads that I cheer if I see one - there's a probably-base-spec 992 Carrera that I see about once a month (always on a particular road) and what always strikes me is how wiiiiiiide it is and how sci-fi it looks with that light strip across the back...and yes, it has a vanity number plate on it (always deserving of a particular salute), but I still want to shake hands with its owner for actually driving it.
I think at this point they're worse than many a Ferrari or Lambo for the speculation game
I nearly binned it 😂😂😂 thank you so much for your honesty. Was it the cup2's .. or was it the grease out the back of maccas?!
I worked at a chippy as a nipper (fish and chip shop as a young person for Americans) and used to nearly tuck the front end of my moped on all the starch and grease on a weekly basis!
This did make for good wheel spins in my classic 998cc mini 🤘🤘🤘
See, now you've made me want one.
30:20 "One thousand three hundred thirty three five hundred forty nine pounds". Haha! That's not even a number. I think you meant "One hundred thirty three thousand five hundred forty nine".
Great review as always.. I have a 2017 R35 gt-r and a Huracan. For family just a cayenne base.. I love the way the new 911 turbo s looks like, but the engine sound and the overall driving experience is always a letdown.. Crazy fast but not exciting at all. I want to love the Porsche but I simply can't
What a fantastic review
Is hard to believe that Porsche would make a dronie exhaust from factory, but seems a very honest review as always
Pleasing to see traditional dials for speed and revs.
If only it were manual.. Then it would be perfection.
I wonder if Porsche would try a GT4 Touring with that, or better yet a GT4 R 😮
I met an engineer who worked on a 981 prototype with a GT3 engine and manual. Probably held back by corporate.

Anecdotally, according to my instructor at the Porsche Experience place, Preuninger maintains that normal discs/pads are the best track option due to the replacement costs. Not that your average RS owner will really do that many track miles I imagine. They'll probably be polishing it ready for flipping or storage. 😥
The 944 Turbo was de-tuned because it would have been faster than the 911 at the time. And even as quick as the 911 Turbo, if not quicker. A few aftermarket tweeks made the 944 Turbo an absolute monster.
I fucking loved mine.
I had one too. The early 250 bhp with the suspension and other tweaks. Remap to 300 bhp. Fantastic on track and road. And I could get a set of wheels or a bike in the back!
Thank you 4 this review👍 Let' s order the Lotus Emira 🎉
How you can be left cold by any 718 is beyond me. Even the base is sublime to drive. Providing it’s a manual so you can control the revs.
You can totally control the revs in a PDK as well several ways. In fact, the PDK is more controllable due to the high gearing in the manual.
@@drbobs8267 I don’t find my manual too high geared TBH. I know the PDK is incredible but I want to be totally engaged so it’s a manual for me. My comment was just for those that constantly moan about ‘turbo lag’. It’s not turbo lag. It’s boost threshold. And with the manual it’s never an issue as I’m always over 1800/2000 rpm. The car is always in the torque zone and it revs out nicely so the torque smoothly yields to the peak HP.
