Wonderful that you found that Alice Coltrane. A truly beautiful album. If I recall I have some kind of odd 200 gram pressing. Would love to find an original.
Thanks for sharing you recent additions. I really love that Pete Townshend album. I remembering buy it when it was released. Every song on it is a gem to me. Have a nice day.
Hi Edward! There were a few albums that I listened to over and over that summer of 1982, and Chinese Eyes was one of them...along with Crimson's Beat, Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom, and Peter Gabriel's Security, although that came out a bit later. (Also my guilty pleasure, the Go-Go's Vacation.)
@@progrocktommyscorner Oh yeah! "Turn to You" is such a killer song. And that bass break in "Head Over Heels." I saw them live at the time of that album, very fun show.
Michael, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! Your brilliant descriptions of the music brought tears of joy to my eyes. Alice's ''musical explorations of the Soul'' is the best possible phrase to define her Gifts. The Egyptians believed that humans have seven souls, Alice may have eight souls, I know that John has at least, nine souls. Gerd Zacher's version of Kagel's ''Improvisation Ajoutee'' on the Wergo label was my gateway into his sound- world. Pete's ''Slit Skirts'' may be his finest tune but ''Who Came First'' is my fave album by him. Your review of ''North Star'', made me re-think my opinion of Philip Glass, he was always my least favorite Minimalist. R.I.P. Roy Haynes, my introduction to his drumming was Andrew Hill's ''Black Fire''.
Hi Michael! In fact, I originally wanted to do a background spread of LPs featuring Roy Haynes, but I couldn't come up with enough. So since I had Back Fire already pulled, I got the idea to do a fire theme instead. Who Came First is a great one. I wish I had snagged those original Meher Baba LPs when they were still around. Maybe someday I can make a video about guru albums, like Who Came First, Journey in Satchidananda, and Love Devotion and Surrender. The thumbnail could be that old Mad magazine cover with Alfred E. Neuman as the Maharishi. Thanks for watching!
Michael, nice scores. I recently got that Gerd Zacher and the one from the previous year where he plays Kagel, Ligeti, and Juan Allende-Blin. Thanks, Chris
Excellent scores Mike. I do have the Curved Air. I think my copy is a reissue from a few years ago. I have been trying to find a close to mint copy of Journey in Satch for a long time now. They are very hard to find. All of them have ringwear. I do like your album fire theme behind you. When I was in my early teens I was in an organized street hockey league. For my coach's birthday. We all chipped in a dollar for an album. We asked him what album he would like to own. Without hesitation he screamed out "Birds Of Fire" by Mahavishnu Orch. He was responsible for getting me into fusion. Far out update Michael. Updates like this one is what the VC was built on~ Rob/Boston
Hey Michael, Sweet scores. That Alice is one of the few jazz albums in my dad's collection. was a great intro to her. Nice, fairly unheralded Philip. Expect to find the unexpected....with John Cage. 🙂Want to hear more of the Pete and Curved Air now. Thanks as always and happy spin-age! -Carm
Hi Carm! The Pete Townshend is in my opinion much better than the Who albums of the same period...Pete was clearly holding back his best material for himself. I spent the summer of 1982 listening to the album repeatedly, along with Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom, King Crimson's Beat, Peter Gabriel's Security...and the Go-Go's Vacation. The Curved Air debut is good, but the next couple of albums are more adventurous and interesting. Always great to hear from you, thanks for watching!
Burn baby burn 😂 I can't believe that Fire On The Bayou by the Meters isn't on the wall !!!. I finally ordered my copy of the new Frank Zappa reissue on yellow snow vinyl. I was impressed when you showed yours. I still remember that Curved Air picture disc. I was very impressed by it but didn't get it. You always provide food for musical thinking. I still like the first Pete Townshend album the best, but I think I will give some of his others a listen today.
I originally wanted to feature the late Roy Haynes in the background, but couldn't come up with enough LPs. But since I already had Andrew Hill's Black Fire out, I decided on the fire theme instead. The first Townshend album is another great one...maybe someday I'll spotlight guru albums like Who Came First, Journey in Satchidananda, Love Devotion & Surrender, etc. Thanks for watching!
Hi Michael So glad you got a copy of the Alice Coltrane..a beguiling and atmospheric listen for sure...I bought a reissue a couple of years ago, but you did well to get that original. North Star is great..I recently streamed it as I always liked Mike Oldfields' version of the excerpt he performed on his Platinum Album. Pete Townshends' songwriting in the 80s tends to get overlooked..he was still hugely talented as a songwriter and just as self deprecating and honest which is a strength of his I think. I struggled with Curved Airs' debut..I probably need to revisit it.. Hope you're keeping well. 🙏
Hi Rob! In my opinion Chinese Eyes is superior to the Who's '80s albums...Pete was clearly holding back his best material for himself. I played that album constantly in the summer of 1982, along with a few others like Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom, King Crimson's Beat, and Peter Gabriel's Security. The first Curved Air definitely has its good points, but they really came into their own on the next couple of albums. Thanks for watching!
The hits single version of Philip Glass. Now I know which Glass album is the must have It sounds like this a proper entry point into his world. I did not know that little weird sticker was for anti counterfeiting. What a marvelous idea. Lot of nice cheap heat Michael. I use to have an OG of that Curved Air album, I honestly just didn’t get it Michael. I have never really listened to the lyrics of Slit Skirts, wow, sexual repression
Hi Steve! Most of the other Philip Glass records I have consist of very long pieces, including a couple of operas which would definitely try your patience. He also did a couple of "symphonies" based on themes from David Bowie's Berlin trilogy, which don't end up sounding very Bowie-ish. Thanks for watching!
Hello Michael! What a varied score😃! Luv'ed C.Air's "Phantasmagoria" (and had a deep crush on Sonja Kristina...☺️) when in school. And must say l Andrew Hill's "Black Fire" is tremendous. Have a nice weekend. 🥳🎸
Hi Michael! I originally planned to put out all LPs that the late Roy Haynes played on, but I couldn't come up with enough...but the Andrew Hill album made me think of the "fire" theme. Thanks for watching!
Interesting & eclectic bunch of records you purchased indeed. I've been getting into girl groups lately Picked up double LP comp by the Shangri-las....Blondie covered a song they recorded"Out in the Streets" And.an album by an obscure 60s black girl group named Honey& The Bees
Very nice! I do dig the girl group scene, though I've never had occasion to show much of that on my channel. I do have some nice compilations. Thanks for watching!
The Alice Coltrane is an excellent album - nice pickup - my copy is a later re-issue. Massive fan of Philip Glass's work - North Star is one I really need to get on vinyl, currently just have aCD version. Only ever known it with the reissue cover though - never seen that original cover. Ashamed to say I've never actually ever heard, never mind owned, a Pete Townsend album, despite being a fan of the Who! While I like Curved Air I've never put them in the premier league of prog bands, perhaps because I'm a little unsure of Sonja Kristina's vocals. Regards... Pete PS can't seem to find your address (which I thought I had) could you email it me please?
Hello Pete! In my opinion that Townshend album (from 1982) is much better than the Who's '80s albums. Pete was clearly holding back his best material for himself. I agree about Curved Air not quite being in the top rank of prog bands, but they did do some brilliant stuff, especially on the second and third albums.
D'oh, my dumb ass didn't put together until right now that you're in the bay area. Some serious cheap heat indeed (too many rhymes). Pete Townshend gets overlooked as a songwriter way too often.
Impressive finds! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rob! Thanks for watching. Birds of Fire, besides being marvelous musically, is one of my all time favorite album covers.
