  • This video dives into the topic of online identity and explains an identity system which puts the user in control without relying on a proprietary framework.

We use the terminology of SSI, as the concept of individuals or organizations having sole ownership of their digital and analogue identities, and control over how their personal data is shared and used. The user is central to the administration of one’s own identity. This adds a layer of security and flexibility allowing the identity holder to only reveal the necessary data for any given transaction or interaction. It gives individuals or organizations agency to control their identity information and therefore acknowledges that identity is about much more than logging in.

One of the keys that prevents companies from requiring certain details about us as a condition of transacting with them is the difficulty involved in gathering and organizing such data. e.g., medical records. WE LIKE THAT. We don't want that info organized and stored centrally even if we have "control" over it because that would just empower companies and governments to ask us to "voluntarily" provide the information or be denied the good or service we seek.

I'm just getting into researching about SSI, and it seems great! Are you saying that a consideration to have is a corporation or government withholding their services because you're refusing to provide all the details regarding your identity? Or rather, that since the individual is the central holder of ALL their identity, it could be used against them. It sounds like a valid concern that a company may say 'No thanks, we're not going to service you until your provide ALL or more than what you may feel comfortable offering.' It sounds coercive, but is that the point your trying to make? Like I said, I'm just now learning about SSI, and I'm trying to understand what negatives there could be from employing it.

@@Ryzeke Many of us consider this to be feeding into a much broader policy program of censorship and control. In a world where the leaders are trusted by the people, SSI would probably be a great thing. We live in a different world, one in which our leaders are (or are at least perceived to be) owned by malevolent oligarchic interests.

The difficulty you talk about gathering and organizing such data, e.g. medical records, can have seriously bad consequences. It is common in healthcare for a patient to be incorrectly diagnosed or treated due to lack of access to the patient history.
I don't think we should be protected by the defects and inefficiencies of the systems in place. Someone committed to turn them around will always have the upper hand on you. I think efficient and transparent systems should prevail and their good usage should be enforced by active citizenship, free press and education.
IMO, that pattern of thinking is like saying NO to technological progress because it is harder to hack a damn slow computer....

Hi I am a cryptographer-researcher. I would like to discuss about some ideas. First, what if the policy of confirmation is private, meaning that, you don't know what is the conditions that your identity should satisfy? Do you know some application for that? Second Question: what if the condition is complicated and involved with many attributes. This means the user have to generate a large proof.

You don't spend enough time fleshing out the the problems that you're saying SSI is meant to solve. Consequently, those problems do not seem very problematic. As a result, viewers may wonder whether those supposed problems are the real reason for the identity management revolution for which you advocate. If you want to fuck with people's identities, you need to say something much much more compelling (e.g., "our identity system would prevent the Government from tracking you and regulating your transactions", or something like that). Else, one wonders whose team you're on. It is now us or them. Choose a side.

Your response lacks critical thinking. SSI is ownership of your own identity, with bulletproof security and yes, independence from central authorities who misuse and game your data for financial benefit. Not just that, physical ids are inherently flawed, can be faked, and are not cost effective for millions and billions of people. Also, on a global scale, they are tied to the issuing agencies, and in nations with unstable governments and war, when the government falls, you lose your identity. The Syrian refugee problem is a clear indicator of this. Please do your own research, a video shouldn't be the entirety of your knowledge on a subject.
