One thing about the restaurants I've noticed. While they don't generally have AC, they tend to be open in the front and most have fans they'll aim at you. I find that's enough to be comfortable.
Thanks Jon for the video & thoughts. Have to admit Chiang Mai does have everything & as we get older initially we want quiet but at the same time the "convenience" you mention becomes very attractive too. We often consider moving back to CM. One more thing is CM has some really good deals on condos & homes due to the large amount of developers. The home selection is greater with nicer designs than further out in other provinces.
Great video again Jon! Always good to hear about the good and not so good sides. Chiang Mai has been on my list for a long time and I hope to visit it soon.
my wife and I just spent a little over two weeks in Chiang Mai--unfortunately during the burning season so air quality as pretty bad.. Regardless, I had gone there to do cooking and wife to visit with her printaking friend who as a studio there. We each spent our days as we liked. I'd enjoy being in Chiang Mai for a few months if I could.
@@jondcantonCM is literally the number one polluted city on the planet at the height of burning season. The average “year round” pollution in Bangkok is not in any way comparable to that.
Yeah, I get it. But I can't live without the sea. I'm from a seaside city, and it is hard for me not to have the sea nearby. I walk near it almost every day. I'm looking for minor ( not really ) cities, like beach cities in Thailand, like Rayong, Phetchaburi, or even Krabi.
@@user-kt9zs I lived in China .. and I heard and experienced some heavy shit .. so I'm aware of that. Vietnam, I can't consider it a communist country, and I know it is a light version, but still ... but I know, and I hear a lot of good things about Vietnam. Thanks
yes you are right...CM is a good average of all aspects. I am not sure wether Pattaya could be an other option at least for size, convenience. Just the kind of tourist (activities) there is a big nogo, but may be it could change in the future?
I'm a new subscriber to you channel and am enjoying the content and pros and cons are always a good thing to know. My friend moved there last year and I am hoping to visit this year. Oh and you can ask for the spring rolls to be delivered at the same time as the meal. 😁 Thanks for the vids
Chiang Mai is nice, but you got me all interested in Chiang Rai and the last two small towns you visited. They seemed quieter and less congested than Chiang Mai. I am also betting that the condos in those smaller towns are cheaper too. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I am from India, I want to visit Chiang Mai, but I never did international trips, if anyone from India is going Chiang mai, please connect 😀, we will go together.
Can never get my head around the food all appearing at different times. Really frustrating when your dish arrives after everyone else has finished eating theirs and their other habit of delivering starters and main courses at the same time (or even in reverse order). It ain't rocket science. LOL
You should a copy of the vid - perhaps fudge the views a bit, to the Chiang mai tourist beuro (can’t spell) I’m sure they’d sponsor you anyway?!? But yea I reckon you’re right about Chiang mai… tbf
There are better dreams than chiang mai , nowhere the best in all of thailand. so many beautiful seaside resorts in Asia with better and breathable air, more fun in beautiful vietnam, Cambodia and Philippines.
@@jondcanton haha yup I live next to the rocky mountains I guess I prefer mountains also but thinking more vacation a beach is exotic since I'm used to mountains the temperatures is nice being high elevation it's cool evening and mornings temperatures fluctuates a lot here
The best part of CM is the burning season forces you to go on a 2-month road trip to explore the rest of southeast Asia.
Exactly this, a lot of people look at it as a negative but a 2-month break in BK is perfect for me & am ready to go back to CM
Yeah true, or you can stay at home with the air purifier on :)

Yep that's true :)
Thumbs up 👍 Jon…..Just the opposite for me….I love living by the ocean (Phuket) and vacationing in the mountains
Thanks mate :)

Thanks mate! Yeah agree on the choice of properties here :)
Been multiple times to CM and love it. On my shortlist to semi retire, Bangkok and KL right up there too
👍
Again a great video!
Thanks mate, appreciate the comment :)

Love Bangkok but Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai would be places I would want to live long term.
Yes, the two most boring places in Thailand. 😴😴
Yep, same here :)
Agree with you about MHS. Enjoying your vloggs👍
Thanks mate!
I will be coming out to Chiang Mai on 17th July for 1 year Ed Visa. Looking forward to returning to live there after 5 years.
Nice!

Yep lots to do here :)
I really loved Chang Mai and Pai, but I couldn't live there due to the major air pollution...
Yeah I find it's not ideal but manageable, Bangkok has pollution as well year round

Yeah if you like the sea then Chiang Mai maybe is not the best :)
Lots of nice golf courses around Chiang Mai
That only means it attracts alot of Tossas. 😄😄
Yep, have them everywhere :)
food not all coming at the same time is indeed a very thai thing, 18 years and still not used to it :D
Haha yeah, one if those things :)
I love CM, it’s got a kinda Magic to it, that can’t be explained.
Yep 100% :)
I know what you mean!! i wish i can put my finger on it~ 🤔💕

Yep Pattaya is changing, maybe in another 10 years what's there now will be pushed more out of the main areas but we never know :)
I was there 30 years ago. I wonder how much it has changed?

Yeah, you get get condos in Chiang Rai but in the other places they don't really have condos, you'd need a house :)
I prefer Hatyai. 365days of good air. Driving distance to Ko Lipe and Ko Samui. Visa run is 57 km.
I've only ever been once, need to check it out again sometime :)
@@jondcanton come come to Hatyai. Let me know in advance, I will try to host you.
Mae Hongson is indeed amazing. A good escape from CM
Yep love that town! :)
You don't mention the problems with pollution in the area.
Yes he does
The biggest negative of living in a tourism area is that as a long term resident you will always pay tourist prices and your not a tourist 😂😂😂
Yep true

Should visit if you can :)
How bad is the smoking season when everything is being burned in the mountains? Even Thailand themselves says it is very bad for your health.
It's not great during burning season but now the air is perfect :)
everything you have said is true in this video, BUT the burning season is such a big negative
Yep, that is the negative, can't have it all :)

Yeah, a few months out of the year is not great :)
Because it's close to Pai!
Pai is great yes!
I will never retire in C.M. or live here only enjoy my vacation condo home with love and make me richer from BKK Kap!🙏
Gets upset becaue they didnt bring his Spring Roll a the same time as his Green Curry, Deary Me. 🤣🤣

Personally I prefer Hua Hin as a prospective retirement location. Not far from Bangkok, beaches, mountains, modern shops and facilities.
Yeah I can see the appeal of Hua Hin :)
Getting food at the same time in Southeast Asia???? 😂😂😂😂 Good Luck with that !!!!
😁
