Rather interesting watching this interview *after* the announcement of Okami's sequel at TGA. I wonder how much of a reality it seemed back at the time of the recording of this interview!
Japanese studios set up by industry veterans, making youtube channels where they invite and talk to their old coleuges from the past is my new favourite genre. Thanks to Bokeh Studio's Golden Hour series and UNSEEN I have lived long enough to see the day where devs I admire just sit down and have fun while talking about games.
Thank you so much. We hope to produce more content like this in the future. Of course we are followers of Bokeh Game Studio and their amazing works. I spoke to Toyama-san recently in Tokyo and told him how much I love their RUclips channel.
Masahiro Sakurai's RUclips channel is also an absolute banger it's like the same team that did the smash character move set reveals which were always edited perfectly and so fun to watch
@@Spoooooked I know about them. There's of course more journalistic channels like Archipel and Cutscenes that have also given a huge look into Japanese creators. I just didn't want to list off every single channel :D
Even though I live in a completely different culture (I'm Brazilian), Okami managed to resonate with me in such a way that it changed my edgy 14-year-old self into a better person. My grandma passed away knowing that I learned about faith, kindness and healing from "the puppy who draws" and I'm really grateful for that. Much love!
I was close to 10yrs late playing Okami but was going through a very rough time in life as well. It was such an uplifting game and just what I needed at the time. In a way; although I regret not being part of the initial sales; I'm glad I saved my first playthrough. I can't even recall what was negative in my life as it's been replaced with how adorable and fun Okami is to play.
Okami is the game that convinced my parents to get me my first game console (ps2) because I showed them you were healing the world and not just fighting like they thought video games were. I made them a Powerpoint to show them slides from the trailer (it wasn't even out yet) and cried when I opened the Ps2 on Christmas day (I was in 8th grade). I've continued to play games and its a huge part of my life but Okami will always be my favorite game. I buy every port it gets (Ps2/3/4, switch, and PC)
That's pretty crazy!!! In a good way I mean. Actually just bought it for ps5 because it was $5 and I just saw the sequel announcement. I've never played it but am a fan of Kamiya's work so I wanted to have it.
When I played okami for the first time in 2006, I completely fell in love with the game. At that time I worked in a game store in Brazil, I always recommended Okami to customers but unfortunately it sold very little, to this day it saddens me how such a wonderful game didn't sell as well as it should have. Thanks Kamiya and and beatiful Nakamura for such great games over the years!
“Okami was supposed to have a bigger story” Thats crazy to think about because when I played it, it already felt like it had 3 substantial stories contained within it.
True, when you beat Orochi you think the game is going to end then it's like the second half of the game it's actually "Okami 2" but it's still just Okami and to think that he wanted to make it even bigger it's truly insane.
The honesty about the poor team synergy behind Okami only makes me appreciate how well it came out in the end. I don't think its a bad thing to know that great art can come from undesirable situations, especially if you can look back and laugh at it all.
Okami is so beautiful, one of my favorite games ever. The visuals, music, script, the characters... just an unique masterpiece. Thanks both for heal my heart with that amazing and beautiful game.
I was absolutely absorbed by this conversation as much as I was absorbed by Okami, Bayonnetta, and all the projects Kamiya and Nakamura. I love both the humility and confidence expressed throughout this video. Looking forward to Kemuri!
In other words, people shouldnt take social media too seriously and being blocked isnt really a big deal at all. Decreasing my time on social media sure let me get in touch with reality even more and Im glad that I chose to do so.
That's a nice sentiment but it doesn't work very well when you're blocking and antagonizing your own customers. Hideki Kamiya is very talented. He's also very arrogant. He quit Capcom, did things his way at Platinum, and now he's asking Capcom to take him back and let him direct a new game while showing no humility.
I cant believe Clover is back!!!! That original team made some of my favorite games of all time. 😎🤘 Also very much looking forward to seeing what UNSEEN can do!
Hideki Kamiya, in the first 2 minutes of this interview, uncovered the biggest flaw in Social Media. The Social Media systems only show you the bits and pieces of a conversation that will make you question and engage, but the systems do not show you the bits and pieces that would calm you down by providing the full answer. Because Social Media is built on engagement having users see the answer immediately would make them not interact any further, but interaction is what Social Media systems want the most. And that is why Hideki Kamiya receives the same question countless times - the system is built to not provide the answer he gave to it's users, just so they keep engaging with the system.
This is such a beautiful video. I don't think I've ever seen Japanese developers speak so candidly and honestly about their career, their own shortcomings and having genuine banter and laughs along the way. I think Kamiya and Nakamura are both in an interesting position right now: being either unemployed or independent, unshackled from the cold corporate structure of big game corporations in Japan, they can speak freely without worry of getting in trouble. When every interview with a JP developer feels as formal as a Nintendo Direct, this is totally cathartic and refreshing.
Game developers and the efforts they make on a project are often unseen, so we hope to shine a light on that. The response to this video has been great, so we will continue to showcase game development as we go through our own development process.
Haha, I liked how Kamiya and Nakamura san had an opportunity to catch up and reminisce about the good times they've had developing games and I really hope that they'll collab together again on a future project or more. Also, I'm looking forward to the follow-up and thanks for the upload of this video, too! 😎👍
"perhaps Kamiya is a scary person, the way he sometimes responds on Twitter" I thought, watching this video and the ones on his channel where the truth is actually discovered.....he is a big nerd. I love nerd Kamiya, I see the passion that makes such a personality come to life.

Kamiya in the early days of Twitter was a completely different guy. He responded to everyone and was enthusiastic and helpful. Then some weirdos kept asking him incredibly obscure questions about DMC and it broke him. From that point on his Twitter persona became a critique of Twitter itself, exclusive to Twitter. The real Kamiya always stayed the same though.
Thank you for the opportunity to watch such an incredible discussion between two legends!! I absolutely cannot wait for part 2! ❤ If I may, I would also like to kindly point out an English subtitle error at 40:44 -- Kamiya says "Biohazard 1.5" (バイオ1.5), but this is translated in the English subtitles as "Bayonetta 1.5" (ベヨ1.5).

Love the candid conversation on game development. It's nice to know that every creator struggles with confidence, no matter how much success they've had in the past.
I used to follow Hideki as I follow all the game directors I can. I never even wrote or reply to him anything (that I can recall) but I remember something happened that he got a lot of bad rap on twitter and out of the blue blocked almost every non speaking Japanese on his page. I think it presents a great educational opportunity for those of us who want to become BETTER FANS, because the more we understand how this all works, the more we can offer more valid and effective feedback. Thank you!
Thank you for the interview. We finally got the chance onow what goes in Kamiya's mind. The games he directed were amazing, and the pacing was always top-notch. I would love to hear more about his future plans and projects.
This was an incredible conversation to be able to listen to. Thank you for sharing these insights into Okami/Clover and just the human side of all things creative.
It took me a few days to catch up and see this. Watching this did made me think of the old Iwata Asks. I hope you can share more interviews with other people in the industry too
One of the best videos I have ever seen, thank you Unseen. Kamiya is a legend and I'm really glad that he is not retiring, would love to see him finishing Scalebound, because it was like a dream game for me, but I'm just excited to see him continuing his legacy and being happy. Nakamura is such an amazing person, would love to know more about her. Okami and Bayonetta are two of my favourite games, greetings from Brazil.
Okami has been my favourite game ever since released. It made a huge impact on my life, and I do feel the word "healing" does describe Okami very well. Thank you for this video. I enjoyed it.
Oh, hey, a video about Kamiya. He made my favorite game, Okami! Oh, this interviewer worked with him? On Okami? And she had a hand in the moon cave, Ponc'tan, AND the sunken ship, aka the best areas in the best game? And the fun brush interactions I used to spend hours playing around with? Can't wait for the next video. And whatever project she was talking about working on.
I hope in next interviews you show cast achievements and successes before discussing the bad times in game development 👍awaiting more interviews with Japanese game industry legends 💪
Okami is such a beautiful game❤❤❤❤ And even though there were big differences in the team, you put so much effort into it and gave us players such a great game, thank you for that!
This video was so sweet, seeing both of you remembering things and being really kind while, at the same time, poking fun at the past problems (And I'm really surprised that we got so much stuff and there still a 2nd part!) I do hope your company and game development is doing great and that Kamiya-san can do what he loves now and the future
It has been truly interesting to discover the details behind the development of Ōkami. Now I wonder what the "hexes" you both mentioned were all about.
From the games Hideki Kamiya created, all of then had a gameplay focused in combat, and combos. I honestly think its really cool how he always tried to come up with a new combat gameplay every game he created.
I finished Okami HD last year and I really liked its style and world. I even teared up at the final scene with everyone giving their hope to Amaterasu. But hearing how Kamiya-san wanting a photo-realistic game out of Okami makes me realize how Capcom's upcoming Kunitsu-Gami is pretty much that sort of idea. Though I think if Okami was not in the art style that it is in now, it would've been a different game entirely.
I can’t get enough of these two talking, so looking forward to part two! By the way, at the end of the video Kamiya is talking about Biohazard 1.5 (Resident Evil) but in the subtitles it says Bayonetta 1.5 at 40:46
I LOVE THIS FORMAT and im sad we western devs will rarely have the chance to witness it due to PR-restriictions. Two legendary devs just chilling and talking about their nostlagic experiences, no strings attached.
To be honest, as time goes by Kamiya blocking anyone who he finds even moderately annoying resonates with me more and more. Twitter is a hellish wasteland of morons, if you aren't bringing me anything of value to my feed, you're wasting my time and potentially contributing to a worse mood.

I really appreciate pieces like this, getting to know the people behind the works I love so much. I think it presents a great educational opportunity for those of us who want to become BETTER FANS, because the more we understand how this all works, the more we can offer more valid and effective feedback. Thank you!
I loved this. I don't know who had the idea to have this chat but it was brilliant, these two are really funny. If it ever happens I want Okami 2!
Okami is one of my favorite games ever, and hearing you two talking about it brought so many fond memories back.
What an incredible conversation and I appreciate the work putting it together. I will set my dinner in hex formation in honor and remembrance. 🤩
I really enjoyed watching you two reminisce about some of my favorite games of all time. Arigatto~! 🙇♂️❤️
A master of his craft. Also, a truly obtuse man. He's precious.
Okami, DMC, Bayonetta, GOD HAND, among others. We will not forget about God Hand. All gems of games. ❤
God hand is shinji mikami bro. Another chiller
この動画のお陰で、TGAの大神の発表のシーンは心に染みました。今のいくみさんがお手伝いすることは難しいのかも知れないけど(代表ですしね)、あの時の続きがみれる、と思ったら涙でた。ほんとにうれしい。
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Okami is still my favorite game of all time. ❤
Okami has been my favourite game ever since released. It made a huge impact on my life, and I do feel the word "healing" does describe Okami very well. Thank you for this video. I enjoyed it.
This guy is a legend holy
Oh, hey, a video about Kamiya. He made my favorite game, Okami!
Oh, this interviewer worked with him? On Okami? And she had a hand in the moon cave, Ponc'tan, AND the sunken ship, aka the best areas in the best game? And the fun brush interactions I used to spend hours playing around with?
Can't wait for the next video. And whatever project she was talking about working on.
Such a precious conversation! Thank you for making these videos and sharing the memories with the world. Looking forward to the next one
@@gtortilla Thank you for watching
I still like him he made Devil May Cry one my first games own from him
Really nice editing/production on this vid :)
Thanks for the kind words!
Hideki Kamiya's a very talented person basically pioneered the Hack & Slash genre that we know today
Ikumi continues to be one of my favorite humans. Bless her.
This video was so sweet, seeing both of you remembering things and being really kind while, at the same time, poking fun at the past problems (And I'm really surprised that we got so much stuff and there still a 2nd part!)
I do hope your company and game development is doing great and that Kamiya-san can do what he loves now and the future
Two legends of the videogame world, I will always admire their work.✨
One of my absolute favorite games of all time, Okami is Masterpiece, Thank you for bringing to life such a beautiful game! ❤
I like the ooooooo sound he keeps making
Not a big fan of videogames, but i admire the whole efforts you put in every development. Also, is always interesting hear stories from creators.
Thanks Nakamura-san for sharing this video!
Thank you for watching
I think one of my favorite things about Okami really is just how everything looks and feels like a painting.
This was very enlightening. I loved Okami back in the days. Thank you for the video!
Great video, had fun watching it
Amazing. I love this videos.
It has been truly interesting to discover the details behind the development of Ōkami. Now I wonder what the "hexes" you both mentioned were all about.
The background music really suits the okami talk, so calming
プロジェクトにイクミさんのような理解ある人が居てくれると本当に心強いんだよな
Great content and insight as a big Okami fan. I'm blocked Kamiya-san on Twitter, but I wear it as a badge of pride.
That reminds me I need to play the Kunitsu-Gami demo! The artwork looks beautiful for that game.
ah yesss.. my favorite Spooky Girl and Hideki Block-san.. its rare to see our favorite developer talking about themself , its always gain my attention
Kamiya-san is quite polite if you reply to him respectfully.
I was just wondering about Ikumi and what she was up to, and this video appeared. Very spooooooky!
This is amazing, thank you!
