Laura love watching your videos! Have you ever tried wintering over geraniums? You wait until the first hard freeze, pull them out of the ground, shake the dirt off and cut them back. I lay mine out to dry a few days. Shake off any extra dirt I missed and put them in a paper sack. They will appear dead in March but if you plant them and fertilize them the grow. They will be bigger every year. Super easy to do. I even had them start blooming in the spring before I get them planted. You should try it

When we lived in Mobile we had a kumquat tree in our backyard. One day when our daughter was a little younger than Samantha Grace I noticed she looked like a chipmunk. She had a mouth full of kumquats and just this little mmmmm sound coming out of her mouth. Sweet like Benjamin’s humming in the background of this video. A fun memory. ❤🐿️🌿🎶

I grew up up in south Florida. Kumquat trees were the perfect climbing tree because the branches were low enough for a 10 year to reach and the added benefit of a fresh fruit snack. We ate until the corners of our mouth burned. lol. This video triggered a wonderful childhood memory for me. The geraniums in your greenhouse are beautiful. Love your videos.

Me too I thought the same. I live in Florida and we would always climb the kumquat trees. I think the varieties we have here get a bit taller than 6 feet though.

Florida girl here. Calamondin is another interesting citrus tree which can be grown in pots. They have small fruit shaped like tangerines with edible rind and are VERY tart. My mother made preserves with them a few times but we didn’t love it. I have a tree in my yard and I use the juice like lemons or limes.
Edit, your Kumquat will probably drop some of those yellow leaves but as long as there was no damage to the wood it will recover.

    Perfection.
A great way to clean dirty - used clay pots ( in a large plastic container) add water, ammonia, splash of dish soap. These agents do not disrupt the plants' growth in any way and the pots come SUPER CLEAN. RINSE.
( can soak any length of time if your interrupted.)

Being from south Louisiana we experienced hurricane Ida. Not only did we loose the roof off our camp ( in a gated community) but we lost all our citrus trees. The cumquat tree is what I miss. We still in recovery two years later but we still feel fortunate! I may replant after we finish recovery! These videos are encouraging! The reason we able to be almost done is because my husband retired after 42 years the day of hurricane!

Regarding saucers for pots… not sure if you would like this idea but I recently saw an idea to repurpose old glass (crystal or the like) plates or dishes like you see at estate sales, flea markets and antiques stores. I thought I’d start keeping an eye out for some that are affordable and good sizes. Maybe give a second life to some things that seem not be as used these days.

Yes, I did that too, they give a pretty touch to the Terra cotta pots, I also found some clear glass fire king and Pyrex, I think they are for pies, or small round baking dish, but they have a pretty floral design etched into the glass and a couple have decretive handles, look pretty too as saucers they are nice for a little bigger pot.

in your recap video sunday you were uncertain how to respond to a texas viewer about petunias. Here in New Orleans, we have the same situation: jealousy of you being able to have big lush fully blooming petunias all summer. For us, they are cool-weather flowers. We plant in October, they develop roots thru our mild winter, then put on a fabulous show in the spring. By may, the heat and humidity blast them to oblivion. This year, for the first time EVER, I kept two troughs of Vista Bubblegum alive until august - but the blooms grew more and more sparse (despite a trim and fertilizer) and even though they are techically perennials (I had hoped they'd recover with the onset of cool weather), they were just twigs, with no hope to regain their glory. so we'll just do 'em our way and continue to admire yours in amazement thru your 100 degree days....

You should try loquat part of the citrus family, it’s sweet and you can eat the skin. It does have a seed but it’s really a amazing fruit! You can even make a tea out of the leaf’s. It’s the first thing ripe in early spring. Very common here in California they even grow on the side of the road.

Laura, you inspired me to purchase all of the Maverick Geranium seeds because yours were gorgeous last year. In past years I purchased seed geranium plants in the spring, but the flowers usually aren't that large. I've also saved seeds from those seedling geraniums and have been able to grow them, but like I mentioned, the blooms aren't terribly impressive. Here's to larger more beautiful flowers in 2024.

My mom would love to have a comquat. I'll suggest it after she gets comfortable with lemons and limes.

Highlights were my favorite magazine growing up.

Oh those wee pots are adorable!
Can one grow geraniums at anytime, or does it have a certain time of year?
You make growing plants so easy, Laura. I know you’ve been doing that for years, but regardless you also make it fun especially when you interact with Benjamin and Samantha and of course Aaron as well. 😊💜

I'm temporarily in an apartment and this video has me wishing we were in our forever home so I can start geraniums from seed again. (The 'we' is me and my 4 cats). Very satisfying video for a winter day.

I can relate so well that tree my grandparents had over the back fence it was always evergreen fruit bearing and because central coast is subtropical there is no protection needed I do believe the tree is still there my grandparents moved from that place four years ago still alive and well but as a kid I remember eating that fruit and having a sour mouth.

My dad loved citrus fruit, so he planted all kinds when I was a child, including kumquats. 🍊

Benjamin is such a joy. What is your sink made of, and are you happy with it? I was considering an enameled cast iron one, but was concerned about it showing scratches.

The Meiwa kumquat is the sweetest of the cultivars. I have one of them and they are delicious. I wouldn’t say that they are very sweet, but are pretty good. I have it in a pot and feed it the espoma citrus as well. It will be fine, it might lose the leaves, but it will bounce right back 😊

I grew Maverick this spring after I saw your beautiful coral colored ones. They grew like beasts! They love our South Carolina heat.
