Thanks for this biopic of the greatest Sun Ra I learnt a lot about him socially, musically and spiritually. He was such a prolific and inspiring artist for many years. May he Rest in Peace.
I too discovered Sun Ra at 17, 18, or 19 years young, in 1966 - '67 near, or in Compton, California. I even had a chance to talk to him by phone, in about 1976. Also heard him & The Arkestra, live on public radio @ The Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival of 1972.
The master bandleader, arranger, pianist, synthesizer player, & bringer of worlds of sonic textures hitherto unheard by human ears. Big thanks from planet earth 🌏
i am a musician and i like simplicity, hooks, repetitions, cliches, sign posts as to what style you are playing i guess, however, i love stuff like this which is just highly original and artistic, i mean if you are gong to go all out and reinvent it, that can be fascinating..
The P Funk Mothership and Dr. Funkenstein are indeed pretty similar on the outside of things, but I belief from the other end of the arms of the artistic galaxy 🌻:). 47:00 see, any place, time, colour - NARROWness - obviously creates the necessary downforce people need to feel comfortable with their thousandfold limitations. And I'm no exception, but I tryyyyyyyyyy :). Thankyou.
There's a part in the space is the place biography. Where he took a Saturn LP over to monk's house. The woman with them says the record is too far out. But monk says. "Yeah but it swings"
He says Sun Ra was able to connect "Africa and Egypt, with Philadelphia and the US." Listen to the rest of the sentence, and you will realise the meaning
"Africa" meaning the great Sub-Saharan cultures, and "Egypt" meaning the classical North African culture, and "Philly" meaning American soul... he connected all of them, and outer space

I believe, your beloved uncle, performed with Count Basie, also. The album, Kilamanjaro, the song, Afrique, if I'm not mistaken.
Hi Laron! Is Your Aunt Rusty still alive? I was friends with Atakatune in the last few years of his life
I love Sun Ra.
So awesome to have that kind of connection and related to that elevation! Beautiful!

Who Is Don Letts ? ? ?
1:42 -1:45 what if it really wasn't "fantastic" or "preposterous" ?
"sun ra was able to connect africa and egypt". Is that the kind of expertise we're expecting in this doc? How does he not know Egypt is in Africa?
😂😂😂 my guess is he’s talking about Bantu culture in Africa, and egypt culture.
He says Sun Ra was able to connect "Africa and Egypt, with Philadelphia and the US." Listen to the rest of the sentence, and you will realise the meaning

@@GizzyDillespeesorry you got that wrong. The EGYPT Sun Ra is about is the ancient one, which is BLACK African.
I think he was "probed" once he went to jail, and was never the same after that.🙄
