very nice. I love how they we're out of key in the beginning, but caught up. the sax player is very good. his voice sounds like a rocky Bruce Springsteen. the band kinda sounds like a punk rock version of bruce. amazing. amazing.
I much prefer the covers by bands who like what they are covering. There is something wonderful about when a band on this says, "We love this artist and song." rather than, "We are being Ironic by covering this beloved song by a beloved song that we are going to call crap... What do you mean who are we?"
This is superb! I wonder what the rights negotiation is like, because I'd love to see some of these artists release their Undercover tracks on album like They Might Be Giants did. I really think this interpretation is single-worthy.
As much as I LOVE Bowie and Lucero, I don't think this combo works any better than a couple of other things I love...say, greek olives and chocolate ice cream.
Granted Ben can't really sing very well, he does have talent, a raw talent, before you really go hating on Ben Nichols and his band Lucero, go and dig into some of their own works like Old Death, or Can't Stand to Leave You. I really and neither does anybody else on this page have any idea what songs were left to choose from, I agree it doesn't suit his voice (very little does) but musically it was decent especially for pretty much a live performance.
I can assure you that none of these guys are hipsters. Not even close. They are an amazing band with a badass horn section. Ben Nichols does wonders with his voice, Brian Venable is an awesome guitarist, and the rest of the band own their instruments and put their hearts and souls into it. However....they are not hipsters.
glad i ran into these A.V. club covers. Fuuuuuccckkkiiinngggg sick! the people that think they are trash probably havent even heard of the to the bands that are covering them, no surprise there lol. keep listening to your latest chart toppers or whatever the fuck mainstream cancerous garbage you fill that void between your ears with. these are real passionate musicians with raw talent and that isn't hard to see...... well i guess for the less unfortunate robots it is :/
wow, you all missing the point. creativity is a gift and haters arent welcome. but i guess in this day and age of photoshop and autotune you expect perfection. tastes will change but creativity will be a constant, like it or not. go back to taylor swift and fucking the beyonce machine. and dont miss the latest episode of the kardashians!
love the singer's voice. all in all a perfect cover.
sgt n Agreed. I'd heard OF Lucero but never HEARD them before this. Now I have to hear more.
+aeonautic They are addictive!
Adding the Memphis Sound always works. These guys know music and performance.
These guys sounded great doing a great song....I've never heard of them but glad I have today....
I LOVE IT , IT'S THE PERFECT COVER IN A INPERFECT WORLD.
Seen these guys live 7 times over 10 years of being a fan. They never disappoint
.
this is my favorite cover of this song on youtube
unlitdarkness6 this is my favorite cover period
About the only one of these A.V. things worth listening to all the way through. Well done.
One of my favorite covers! These guy's nail it!!!
I cruised youtube for a decent cover of this Bowie classic, this is the best by far, well done fella's. Loved it.
that was impressive , wow!
This is really good. Best cover I've seen in this AV Club experiment.
I actually listened to this one all the way through. Wonderfu!!
Compared to a lot of these I've seen on Undercover these guys did a great job on a really great up tempo song.
Dosen't get any better than that, great job, you guys rocked it
very nice. I love how they we're out of key in the beginning, but caught up. the sax player is very good. his voice sounds like a rocky Bruce Springsteen. the band kinda sounds like a punk rock version of bruce. amazing. amazing.
P.S.
I used to love his skateboard graphics.
god i love lucero was really excited when I saw them on here!
One of the best ones yet!
still listening to this
Outstanding! Five frickin' stars!!!
Fantastic cover, gentlemen! Great sound.
I love this soooo much!
This is fantastic, not an easy song to cover, and they did a fine job!
This is really good!
There's a reason the folks complaining about his voice are all sitting in front of a keyboard while Ben's out touring the world.
+Chisum Burnett i mean, they also just played a square cover of the song and had a different vocalist.....they might as well have been a back up band
exactly, that's what makes it a *cover* by a band that does their own damn thing 95% of the time and not a *cover band cover*
What a great cover!
this is the best cover of the collection
Awesome cover, great musicians, enough said.
PERFECT.
great song
Was a good cover.. These guys had some respect for the source material and it came out in their playing. Nice job.
Freaking awesome! Bold move taking on a Bowie song. Screw it up and you risk getting drawn and quartered.
Excellent cover! Nice horns too!
Today, cooler than ever.
I've been very resistant ever since Lucero introduced the brass section, but this is great.
Boston. I wonder what the bassist's BAC was. I was pumped I finally got to hear massive nights live.
I much prefer the covers by bands who like what they are covering. There is something wonderful about when a band on this says, "We love this artist and song." rather than, "We are being Ironic by covering this beloved song by a beloved song that we are going to call crap... Awesome cover by Ben and the boys. R.I.P. David Bowie.
Love this
Im really liking this!!
can it get better than this? Humor, mutton chops and a kick ass bass player who never looks down! Amazing
I hope I get a chance to see these guys. If they play nashville
This band is awesome, it's like watching your cool uncle who played with Lou Reed that one time and his friends jam.
This is the only David Bowie song I can say i really like, I remember seeing the video as a kid.
Great job
Bowie was a rock n roller. I think he'd dig this. It takes a song from his disco pop period and injects it some Queen Bitch rawness.
if you listen a little closer to those "disco pop" bowie albums there's a lot of jazz going on in the undertow.
I enjoyed it and their horn section did fit the song quite well.
Good stuff!
Do what you like, try your best, good things will come of it.
That's what I got from this video.
This is superb! I wonder what the rights negotiation is like, because I'd love to see some of these artists release their Undercover tracks on album like They Might Be Giants did. I really think this interpretation is single-worthy.
Damn makes me miss home (Memphis)
YES!
nice cover nailed it
yeah!!!
Chops man on key board & Elvis on bass I can't help but like this cover!
That was a pleasant surprise.
Cool. I'm going to see these guys open for the Hold Steady. Sounds like the opener won't be half bad if this is any indication.
Incredible sideburns/beard thing you got goin on there Rick
I would totally cover RICKY DON'T LOSE THAT NUMBER if had the chance.. love that song.
As much as I LOVE Bowie and Lucero, I don't think this combo works any better than a couple of other things I love...say, greek olives and chocolate ice cream.
It has the drive baby yeah!
Boston, or Jersey?
I was at the Boston show, pretty cool.
its odd that they didn't give any credit to SRV and Double Trouble...since they played on the Bowie version
it's good
This actually works very well.
Awesome, awesome stuff...it makes Lucero look like a bunch of professionals lol...Where was Brian Though???
Would give anything to download this...
+ernurs2 www.youtube-mp3.org/
+Thrifty032781 THANK YOU!!!!!! AWESOME!!!
Is the intro music from an actual song from a band?
definitely
Anyone know the theme at the start of the video?
this kicks serious ass
This is so sick.
They fit the Polyphonic Spree in there.
Granted Ben can't really sing very well, he does have talent, a raw talent, before you really go hating on Ben Nichols and his band Lucero, go and dig into some of their own works like Old Death, or Can't Stand to Leave You.

Grant Sturdivant i bet you can't sing like that
I never claimed ti
Does anyone know how to sing like that? without damaging the throat.
+My Autobiography A Fanfic Don't think you can without damage tbh
+My Autobiography A Fanfic
Gargle gravel all day, be Batman all night
+My Autobiography A Fanfic i think its similer to a grunge singing voice but more screech
Jaime Trujillo I can't do grunge singing either haha
+My Autobiography A Fanfic chain smoke and jamesons
Who else is looking forward to Texas & Tennessee?
atomic cover from David Bowie full of tequila!!!! great job guys!!!!!!!
its weird how this raspy voiced guy can't sing like David Bowie
I JUST DONT GET IT
you guys need to calm down
Thank the gods for people like you.
Says the guy who can't spell and responds to six month old comments from people he doesn't know?
The Patriarchy I appreciate your use of ad hominem, but I don't feel like the absence of ad hominem would be entirely appropriate here.
Another good reason he can't sing like David Bowie...he's NOT DAVID BOWIE!
+cstinne5 lol shut up you pretentious autist
more Memphis band please!
This is what i sing like in the shower after a bender with a blinding hangover
I can assure you that none of these guys are hipsters. Not even close. They are an amazing band with a badass horn section. Ben Nichols does wonders with his voice, Brian Venable is an awesome guitarist, and the rest of the band own their instruments and put their hearts and souls into it. However....they are not hipsters.
His voice is absolutely intolerable.
I can't hit like enough times!!
it says the name at the very end
Nice stuff fer sure
The bassist reminds me of Corey from Pawn Stars. I love this cover though.
Sometimes a band forms purely because your meth dealer said "hey man, I know a guy that plays saxophone!"
Bass player really up for this one
Kinda fantastic.
Kick its ass ROY!!!

This one grew on me. They really got a great groove going with it. Of course, the ending was a bit sloppy ;)
Reminds me of the bloke from Jawbreaker
fucking sweet
Holy Shit! They make this song sound like it was written by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!
Maritime - It's Casual

i agree. i like the rawness of Ben's voice. Dylan can't sing but that doesn't take away his greatness.
lucerogal lol, Dylan....wow, he's only "great" because somehow, hes still alive.
ok willie nelson then. i thought u were pro lucero. maybe i misread your comment.
lucerogal yes you did. I can't be pro feces, er Lucero when its not even music.
are u 12? you can dislike whatever music want but don't be rude about it.
there's nothing wrong with bens voice its like Lemmy tom waits and mike ness
What happened to Brian?!
This was really good, other than the keyboard player messing up a bit.
Great cover! Almost as good as the original!
