Dr Feng idiots at VA wanted to give me insulin with my T2. Told them to stuff it.
They think that most veterans are morons. Knew that I already was making insulin and had insulin resistance. The VA uses the ADA diet(keeping Veterans in T2 mode). Assuming they are getting kickbacks from Govt, ADA and drug companies. VA doctor got angry, I was doing fasting, keto/carnivore. However, it lowered my A1C. I did my own personal study, ADA diet raised glucose a lot. Reversed it when I did fasting and keto/carnivore. They hate that I reversed it.

I began volunteering at my local food bank, and this lecture immediately came to mind. Everyone is overweight, and the main foods offered free to our community are starches. Any fresh produce, meat, or eggs is strictly limited to one item, whereas things like baguettes from a local bakery are available in unlimited quantities. It's also a lot of canned foods, dried beans, peanut butter, cold cereal/oatmeal, and sweetened yogurt. Even people who were alone in their household got a huge bag of baker potatoes and huge onions. Other bakery items are plentiful as well. While they wait, snacks are offered, usually mini muffins and cookies. So, I'm here reviewing this information, so I can apply it to what I see at the food bank. Poverty and obesity go hand in hand. That's exactly what I've been seeing.

Nonmi Hiseddeo exactly. A local family ran our food bank. All 4 of them were morbidly obese. Some people commented that they must be eating all the food at the food bank. I explained that no, they were probably subsisting on potatoes and bread😞

wow 10.5, glad it's come down!
Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers over time with extended fasting and rise from dieting
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS.
It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue ruclips.net/video/giEDadzoErs/видео.html
Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! ruclips.net/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/видео.html
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
Is fasting just the same as caloric restriction? No! Dieting increases the hunger hormone ghrelin while fasting decreases it and has many other health benefits! ruclips.net/video/sVl-nilhWLc/видео.html
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! ruclips.net/video/teQIaU6wp2o/видео.html
Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: ruclips.net/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/видео.html
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! ruclips.net/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/видео.html
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
      What breaks a fast? ruclips.net/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/видео.html
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle!
      ruclips.net/video/fJUDucBWv4s/видео.html
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

*pinesiskin59* : Fasting can be tough when you're not used to it. Instead of doing a 36-hour fast, try cutting out one meal a day, so that you have at least 12 hours between two meals. Your body gets used to this new eating pattern without too much trouble after which you can reduce your eating window to 10, 8 or less hours. This measure alone is going to dramatically improve your metabolism. Nevertheless, you need to keep in mind that any kind of a fast remains very challenging as long as you don't cut down on the carbs in your food. If you combine fasting with LCHF, it becomes "a piece of cake": no cravings, no hunger ! 😉

Like the other commentator said, start slowly maybe just cut out breakfast, then after a week breakfast and lunch...
Also, I would not go past 24 hour fast, unless you plan to fast longer than 2 days. I only say that because Dr. Fung himself said there is no point of fasting for the 2nd day and stopping because the 2nd day is the hardest and than it gets easier.

But I wonder... what about mineral content of the diet? We know that Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, etc. are very important in liver function, and in many other processes. And we also know that modern farming practices lead to mineral-depleted soils. As the soils are depleted, the crops grown on those soils contain less nutrition.
Most Americans eat a diet far too low in minerals such as magnesium and potassium.
What effect does this have on metabolism?
Diet soft drinks are just as hard on mineral balance in the body as the regular soft drinks.
The chemicals in those drinks leech minerals from the bones.
Which could explain why non-caloric-sweetener sodas don't seem to help weight loss.

You can't really get much minerals from plants anyway, they are bound up in oxylates. They also unbalance your minerals because they have too much copper and too little of other things like zinc. Supplementing also causes problems. If you have some eggs every day your mineral levels will be fine.

    Spot on with insulin resistance.
However....its not simply tolerance to inflated levels of insulin. The introduction of trans fats in huge quantities to society, replaced healthy fats.
Trans fats, very elongated ....utilized in making up cell walls, instead of shorter chained fats...distort insulin receptors and glucose uptake.
Insulin..not able to lock into cells, to facilitate glucose transfer...glucose levels do not decrease and the body spikes more insulin.
Trans fats are a primary cause of type 2 Diabetes

Dear Dr Fung - I understand that obesity DOES drive insulin resistance , and with TOFI persons, a just little fat around the abdomen can do it, with fat in the liver and in the pancreas. This is the work of Prof Roy Taylor,Newcastle.2009 and now 2016 clinical trial DIRECT . HIs concept of the personal fat tolerance level. He has shown that reduction of fat can bring back good pancreatic function and lower insulin ' resistance' although there are still plenty of unanswered questions.

We are a little confused as to the meaning of insulin sensitivity. At 33:40-33:54 Dr. Fung begins to say when you are sensitive to insulin you tend to gain more ...; then he quickly changes that to the insulin sensitive ones will gain less weight, but the insulin resistant ones will gain more weight. Shortly after that at 34:09-34:44 he says when you are insulin sensitive you gain more weight. Please clarify.

    • @shieh.4743
      @shieh.4743 6 лет назад

Steve Rush So let’s say two people produce the same high amount of insulin and eat the same amount of sugary food. The resistant one will spike their blood sugar, but the sensitive one will gain weight. The resistant one will not be able to store as much so they won’t necessary gain more - although they may already be obese.

Our goal has to be insulin sensitive because that way we gain less weight, our páncreas produces less insulin because we are very sensitive to the few insulin is up there. if you start to eat refines your body will start to produce more insulin and you become insulin resistant and fat

Hi Jason - I eat LCHF and have plateaued on weight loss. I eat once daily, at 6:30 pm, and fast the entire time in between 5 days out of the week. When I keep my sugar low by eating healthy vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, green beans) I have a hard time keeping the number of calories up!! I add butter or coconut oil, but if I add too much I just can't eat it all (which is a very new problem for me, lol). I think my difficulty is that if I can't eat enough calories, I'm getting into calorie deficit because I'm getting full before I hit my resting metabolic base rate of 1,500 calories a day. Should I increase my sugar those days so I can meet the calorie minimum and just have more 36 hour fasts?

Dr. Fung's recommendation in this video is to eat within an eight to ten hour "eating window" so, perhaps, you should try eating two or three meals - the first at the beginning of the window and the last by the end. For instance, have the first meal at 10:00AM or 12:00PM and finish the last meal by 8:00PM. Personally, the last thing in the world I would do would be to eat a bunch of sugar just to get my calorie count up. Just adding 200 calories to your daily intake using sugar alone will require you to eat slightly more than four tablespoons of sugar. Yuck!

Scroll way down near the bottom to the link, "Download The Lower Your Blood Sugar Flyer". The flyer is a one-page instruction on how to determine which foods cause you to have elevated blood sugar. I am confused between what do I do if my blood sugar will not stay down. I have lost 40 lbs but I worry when the blood sugar goes over 140. I have had diabetes for 40 years and I think the desire to stay between 90 and 140 is foremost in my mind. When I am unable to take insulin my blood sugar goes up. Just don't eat oil or anything cooked in oil. Oil is 4000 calories a pound, the most calorie dense food on the planet!
