  • This one is just going to be epic, I can feel it in my bones. The tech behind this game is just one in a million and I can't wait to see Squadron 42 when it comes out in full swing. When that might be I'm not sure, but do hope that they take their time with it and make it a great one for all to remember for years to come.

Ma'am is not a title , she's a Captain, Sir is her Title, its Navy, Army you don't though, think its originally a British thing that just has never changed. these Titles go back to Medieval times, both Sir and Lady are titles and come with responsibility's,
same thing for the Salute, with Medieval Helmets, you didn't know who you were addressing, so the hand would lift the visor to show the face. and we still salute officers in this way.
that motion blur you see when under fire is to simulate suppression effects.
its 1200 people for 2 games, not one. and 4-5 different Studios across the world

I appreciate you taking the time to explain the history behind the salute. Honestly very interesting, I didn't know the reason why we saluted in the first place. Totally makes sense now 👍
Cool way to use the motion blur effect, I gotta say. Not sure if I've seen it used quite like that before. Maybe in Battlefield, but that was more of a vignette effect I suppose.
I think I was just speaking in general terms of how many people worked at CIG, but if I mentioned that it was just for this one game, apologies, I misspoke.

@@FullSpecStudios 🤗 to be fair the suppression effect i would rather have the background blur like a depth of field effect. similar to "Squad's" system.
but yes CIG has a massive amount of Employees not sure you can call them an indy studio now :P but they still have to push out a finished product.
i've been here since 2013 December, play about 3 hours a dayish, still not board but i do i have taken a month off here and there over the years so i don't get burnt out before we get a more complete version,

@36:12 game glass has us covered, you can use any tablet to link up to in-game MFD display info and manipulate and interact with the menus this way.
@37:31 Most people miss this, notice that the gun doesn't just suddenly appear in his hands or teleports to his hands, he actually grabs and pulls it towards him off the table.
They designed that system specifically for immersion purposes.
@39:00 Guns are us, there are some insane weapons in this game, but they're all designed in a way that you'd think they're real world weapons.
@46:39 Notice how the NPC is actually interacting with the screen properly no faking it, attention to detail in this game is insane.
@49:21 Correction, two massive games being developed at the same time, and they also had to build the 5 studios around the world to do it.
The first 5 years were taken by studio and tools development. in reality the two games have been in full development for only 5 years.
When you consider this fact, it is amazing how fast they've been able to achieve all of this progress.
By comparison, Bethesda, an established studio with a fully working engine, took 8 years to deliver a pure archaic garbage called starfield.

    • @FullSpecStudios

I have heard of the game glass software, some of the people I saw with Flight Simulator said they used it. I thought it had to have compatibility with the game that it's being used on, but you're telling me that you can take most any game and make it work. That's pretty sick 👍.
I love the fact that the guns look like guns and not something that just kind of makes bullets appear lol. I have a soft spot for weapons 😋
I actually missed the fact that he was actually interacting with that screen, see this is what I'm talking about. When the woman in the med bay was actually interacting with the things on the shelf, that honestly was the first thing I noticed. You don't see stuff like that EVER. It's so awesome to see them taking the time to make sure their level of detail is extremely high.

In the Military, you generally would say Ma'am.
But this is the Navy, so it's Sir. (Which is used Neutrally) and mostly used this way in the Marines.
This is because they are taught to see rank above all else, gender doesn't come into it at all, it's just standardization.
    HOTAS
    Double Stick
    Stick and mouse
    Keyboard and stick
    Keyboard and mouse
    Eye Tracking
    Head Tracking
(Voice Control was a thing through a third party service but I don't think it's supported any more due to the anti-cheat)
are all methods of control currently in Star Citizen and therefor can be assumed they will also be in Squadron 42.
I have seen people using third party scripts in the past to use tablets for their ship displays. Not sure if it still works.
There is a video of someone who has styled their room aesthetically to fit the theme of his favourite ship.
There's possibilities to do that stuff, but you can also use head/eye tracking to move your head to look down and easily interact with the buttons on the ship.

Yeah it's really impressive what people have come up with over the years for their setups. I've seen some videos where I'm just thinking "Man if only I had the cash to do that myself". Flight sims would be a regular on my channel even more if I had setups like other people. But no worries, this game will definitely be getting it's own playthrough once it comes out.

7:50 | Using sir instead of ma'am is a scifi trope that dates back to Alien (1979). Since then all space dramas or scifi been using sir as an ubiquitous term for all officers, no matter their sex, race or species.
9:34 | Mark Hamill was in Wing Commander. Chris and Mark go way back.
14:45 | They have extensive support for sticks and pedals and even head tracking. VKBs and Virpil are the big ones for sticks and Tobii eye tracker for head and face. TrackIR mainly for dog fighting.
15:19 | They've stated we will have skills to build up. Can't remember if in both SQ42 and SC or not.
24:45 | SQ42 originally wasn't going to be a 3 part game. But the scope creep was too much and Chris was told to break it up into 3 parts.

    • @FullSpecStudios

Which is something this industry needs more of. No more NDA's, just pure honesty. They don't need to go into GREAT detail about their systems, just keep people apprised of what they're doing and CIG are certainly leading the way in that respect. Hopefully other developers follow suit.

When it comes to setups, you can use HOTAS/HOSAS, streamdecks, gameglass, etc. You can also use TrackIR and Tobii Eye Tracker. The "Sir / Ma'am" thing... its more that your giving respect to the "Rank" rather than the person Wearing it. So "Sir" is sort of the default go-to for the 'rank'.
I think they are both used interchangeably, but its not a "taboo" type thing to just use "Sir" for everyone, as again, its the "rank" your saying Sir and Saluting to. It's more a personal choice to consciously switch between Sir and Ma'am.
As you asked a few times.. the game, both Star Citizen and Squadron 42, are being designed with ALL control styles in mind. Keyboard/Mouse, Controller / Keyboard, Controller only, HOTAS + Keyboard, Dual Sticks +Keyboard.

Regarding the ship at 20:14 that you took a liking to, it's called the Gladius from Aegis Dynamics and is one of the light Fighters in SC/SQ42. It's basically the "Hero ship" for the Singleplayer campain so it is also usually the ship thats the most developed compared to all currently avaliable ships in SC (there are currently over 100 ships and vehicles already implemented into SC). It's also one of the top ships for PvP, closely grouped with other light Fighters in terms of performance, like the Anvil Aerospace Arrow or the Esperia Blade.
I personally prefer the medium and Heavy Fighters though, like the RSI Scorpius (basically a two seater X-Wing looking ship where the second player controls a powerful turret) or the Aegis Dynamics Sabre (medium Fighter that kinda looks like an F-14 had a baby with an F-22).
    Edit:
If you like fast ships then the racing ships might also be something you'd enjoy (yes, there is ship based circuit racing in SC). They are basically the fastest and most agile ships in SC, and they also double as Interceptors because of that but they are rather fragile and don't have much in terms of Firepower but one of their upsides is that due to their agility and rather small profile they are hard to hit if you know what you're doing. Examples for this would be the Origin M-50 or Mirai Razor lineup of ships.

the 'sir' thing came up on a few reddit posts that seemed to agree senior military officers can/are normally called 'Sir' regardless of gender.
Also yes, hotas/hosas and peripherals in general are all supported currently in Star Citizen, so if that isnt in SQ42 I'd be shocked. Highly recommend using a tobii eye tracker as well, really immersive to be able to see your cockpit so naturally

--The Vid was meant as a long overdue status report to the backer's vs a trailer or teaser but looks awesome. When trailers start appearing, we will actually be close to a release. I guess at least 12-18 months because according to monthly reports they actually started polish on act 1 in March this year after it passed internal QA and NDA play test. This vid is likely the result of some of that work.
--CR games tend to use the older British Royal Navy honorifics. All officers are Sir's and address subordinates as Mr. or their duty station name regardless of rank and gender. Star Trek 2 dabbled with it when Spock calls a female subordinate Mr. Savik or just her rank. The Wing Commander movie also uses it some.
-- They do support USB controllers and flight sim gear and joystick gremlin. They support IR head tracking and Tobii head/eye tracking. They also have something they call FoIP (Face Over IP). With a compatible webcam it will animate your characters face like Facerig and try to do software head tracking in lieu of TrackIR/Tobii. Those are all in the MMO already. The idea is you can have a facetime call in space like in the single player game seeing each other's character on the MFDs eventually. They also support game glass for tablet/phone input control. Some of us make our own flight sim control panels using Arduino Micro Controllers USB features for the MMO and cheaper than you may think. There are hundreds of controls to bind multiple ways if you want. I play with dual VKB gunfighters with the Omni throttle kit and is the best way to fly IMO.
-- SC is very invested in Diegetic UIs like OG Dead Space and hands on manual interactions with physics like Half Life. MMO players are shocked when they are told to pay attention to all the signs that are not ads because they really mean something. UIs are in world where they make sense as much as possible. They are not just single player viewable, other players can shoulder surf and see what you are doing or back seat drive how fast your ships speed limiter is set to on the HUD. Changing your helmet or glasses sometimes changes the UI features as they are AR projected. ***Note the pretty UIs we see here are not fully in the MMO side yet and still on cobbled mash of Crytek's OG flash UI and new hotness Building Blox UIs. The Gladius is a nice fighter but needs that new UI and HUDs like yesterday.
--- The weapons are pretty detailed and customizable with various scopes and attachments in the MMO. The game producer is not a fan of gore and wants to be able to play with kids/grandkids so expect minimal gore. CR usually aims for PG-13 games. In Australia it's illegal to sell games that let you kill police officers or children. The UK where CR lives is pretty strict on that stuff too. Think back to Wing Commander games and the movie and that is what to expect I would guess.

If you would like to drive deeper in the tech i would recommend watching the full citizencon 2953 presentation where they go in depth on the tech including things like rtx global illumination Gen 12 rendering as well as things on guns ships etc mostly relevant to squadron 42 but everything shown was with the intention of bringing it to star citizen before a year. Third person is purely cinematic for those who love their screenshots but it's not intended as a part of gameplay, though currently it's useful when operating a vehicle as a means of checking your proximity to things. On the subject of controllers in the player run organization I'm a part of Black Star initiative the general consensus on brands is thrustmaster for budget vkb for mid range and virpil for top of the line, at the bottom you'll be well under $500 and at the top you'll be looking at around $1000 or more. I actually bought SQ42 with my package first, for I did not know anything about the multiplayer. I am a big X-Files fan so when I saw GA, I got it, but realized it was not the alpha that was installable as I kept clicking through the website.
The crazy thing about this single-player is that it will be what all other space games should feel like. Unparalleled freedom with only the restriction of your conscience if doing a mission.
I also liked Andromeda for the feeling of colonization it gave. I loved Chorus for the speed and intensity of combat. He was addressing her rank hence sir, for she is the captain of that ship. In informal settings, they can say Maam if allowed by the Captain, but to be safe address the rank until corrected.
SC has great options so we OG players always disable motion blur, they also have support for all manner of flight sticks and eye tracking. There is also gameglass support for the cockpit you can have on your tablet.
I think it will be hard to convey emotion on a thousand different faces, and that is why so many games opt for first-person in cinematic scenes of high emotions.

Women in command positions have always shared the same naming conventions using "Sir". Btw, 1,200 people working TWO games....and they started with 20 with little funding. But as to the title of sir being used to address a woman in the military, that is actually something the military itself in reality has been doing or trying to do. in the branches of the service for a while now. just having one ubiquitous title for all so nobody has to walk on pins and needles around which title to use to an officer of Higher rank. Basically limit the amount of titles limit the amount of confusion especially in a battlefield situation.

I can say with confidence, luckily it has nothing to do with being politically correct, I abhor political correctness.
Many people have said that there are a lot of factors that can come into play, but for the most part, yeah it's basically across the board for the most part for the reasons you stated. Just easier to have one title to address instead of many. Which I approve of 👍

It feels like they are coming out of development hell now & they've achieved a lot. These games have the potential to be a substantial step forward in AAA game quality, maybe more evolution than revolution - but the use of diegetic display everywhere feels great. Reminds me of how I felt when I first played Half Life 2 with the physics engine.

Dual flight sticks are one of the more preferred control set-ups for Star Citizen. It seems to give more options with 6 degree of freedom flight. One of the more popular mid-range setups is a pair of VKB Gladiator sticks. Thrustmaster T16000's are one of the popular "cheaper" options.

I think it depends on what type of PVP game. In a fast paced shooter like THE FINALS, it's a bit of a hassle and I would rather get the ability to push a single button for quick response. In terms of single player games, I would say the radial menu has been a big game changer in terms of expanding our ability to choose more items beyond, let's say, the 4 buttons on the D-Pad on a controller.
On PC radial menu's don't really add much to that functionality given that the PC has so many options already, but it's a nice visual touch.

Squadron was planned to be PG13. There will be blood and stuff - probaply Vanduul speering people here and there, but no Dead Space like gore.
Quick note an Squadron 42 Planets:
While it might have been possible to go to any location on that planet, it is probaply very empty appart from the story locations, which are the focus of the campaign. So it is very likely if not set in stone that Campaign missions are very restricted in the traversable regions. If you for example tried to quantum leap out of a mission area in the middle of it expect a game over screen and a court martial cinematic.

42:56 It's the moon Gainey in the Odin system... it's not a planet. The planet that Gainey used to orbit was destroyed when the Odin star went supernova, the remnants of that planet are 'The Coil'. Gainey still a whole spherical grid planetary body, you can land anywhere on Gainey. You can go anywhere in the Odin system and other star systems in the game. You are a serving military officer, you will have time on duty and time off duty.
There are no 'magic time jump' transportations / loading screens in Squadron 42, if you are in one star system and you are told to report to another star system you'll have to get yourself there through all the intervening star systems. When the video opens you are in orbit above the planet Vega II in the Vega system, you applied to the flight academy which is in the Kilian system and your first posting as a navy pilot is aboard the UEEN Stanton in the Odin system... all this information has been given to us and it covers roughly 1/3rd of the game's timeline.
What they can't show on these 2D video presentations is that Squadron 42 is a fully fleshed out game universe, it's made with the same game engine that Star Citizen is - it's basically the same free roam game universe. The director for community content described it this way: 'Squadron 42 is basically one huge dynamic mission inside the Star Citizen game universe', except that it is set in the recent past from the point of view of the persistent game universe. You are living the life of a character going through historic events in that game universe, when you retire from the military you 'retire' your Squadron 42 character to the persistent universe that is Star Citizen. NPC's in the PU will know you, they will know about your history during the Vanduul war and your exploits and choices you make while in military service will affect your experience of the PU.
    Welcome to the verse!

Sounds like the Ares Inferno or Ares Ion would be right up your alley, as heavy fighters that pack a massive punch and can take a serious hit, but are still small enough to weave in and out of battle. The F8C Lightning also fits the bill quite well, too.

This includes being affected by infections, nutrition, hygiene, and yes, losing limbs in combat scenarios. In cases where you do lose a limb, you can have them replaced with cybernetic limbs. The guitar noodling got distracting af while you were talking, but good content otherwise.

Yeah there were some other comments about this. While I looked back at it and deemed it not too loud, I do concede that maybe I overdid it in this one just a little. So I'll adjust this from video to video. Appreciate the feedback 👍

@@FullSpecStudios I don't think it was too loud. I just think it's intense, busy, so it takes more bandwidth to process or ignore than, say, lo-fi. Which is not criticism of the music. Just a practical consideration. Your channel, you ambiance. Heh. Cheers.

I like you but ffs stop the video for talking. 😂 And he is talking to the rank and not the person. So Sir is correct.

Oh you mean you want me to stop the video when I talk. I thought you were saying stop, stopping the video for the sake of talking lol. Well sometimes I think I can get in a little tidbit here and there real quick before anything significant happens 😏

reacting != commenting every 2 min ruining your reaction ;) prefer the people who react first and comment later.

My commenting IS me reacting. If you want, you can call it a commentary video instead of a reaction. But my reaction is in what I say, not just what I do.

Because all game development should take exactly the same amount of time no matter what they have to figure out how to make work?

Star Citizen is a playable alpha, SQ42 is feature complete and in the polish phase. Hate all you want! I'll just be glad I don't have to see you or your ilk in the verse. 🎉 The best thing that could have happened from this long development cycle is to have weeded out most of the Kotaku Bambi type toxic minds that run on instant gratification. I can tell you failed the marshmallow test as a child.

Older than 11 years and still no understanding and perception of how this game is beeing developed from starting with only a hand full of people 11 years ago to a full sized company now. Terrible comment.

8 years and Starfield was 'Done'. Sometimes 'done' is over rated
