This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). First of all, Amy Lee wishes! You haven't heard of them because the American music industry doesn't make any money from them, hence the entire machine grinds to a halt on European bands. You just found the greatest composer of my lifetime, with a virtuoso band who can deliver his music properly. Nightwish is the greatest band on the planet, and being American, I had to work to find them. I found them back in their early days, loved what I heard, but didn't like the original singer, so I drifted away from them. The studio version is that original singer, so the style is not quite the same. This is the definitive version of this song. Every song is unique, no derivative repetition, and each is a masterpiece in it's own right. Floor can sing any and every style, so the catalog is quite varied. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal and Nightwish. Formed in 1996, they are from Finland, 3rd and current lead singer, Floor Jansen (Yan-sen) is Dutch(today is her birthday). She had only been with the band about 10 months at this concert in front of 82k, having taken over mid tour. If you check out the studio version (from the 2004 Once album), you will hear original lead singer Tarja Turunen. Song #13 of 15 here, all songs were recorded with one of the first 2 singers, Floor added her touches, including the ending on this, and made them her own. GLS is one of their 3 longest songs. 9 albums to date, # 10 to be released later this year. The band mastermind is the keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen. He writes 90-95% of the songs. The "pipes" are a facade in front of 3 Korg keyboards (and a wine bottle holder lol). They are a tribute to Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, and made to resemble the Sibelius monument in Helsinki. Wacken is in Germany, so it is pronounced (Vah-ken). See the comment from Gabriel Bardac for more info, and links to a lot of their songs. One of their heavier songs at this show was "Romanticide".

Agreed. Amy is a great singer with a very strong voice, but she does not sing in an operatic, or even a classical, style, so I'm not sure where the endless YT Evanescence comparisons come from. I'm an American and an Evanescence fan, but it never occurred to me to equate the two. Then again, I was a Nightwish fan before Evanescence ever released an album.
@@Zozo-K- Every mention of Evanescence is from an American listener. We are not exposed to European bands, hence they're the only female fronted hard rock most American's have ever heard. I scream everytime I hear them mentioned in relation to Nightwish, and I love Evanescence. There is no comparison. And no, Amy can't even hold Floor's beer. Both bands were established in the same year, and Nightwish still pulls over 50K fans to festivals and I haven't even heard of a Evanescence tour. They are basically an American pop band by comparison, and a rather good one, but there is no true comparison.

I've listened to maybe over 200 GLS reactions. Many reactors first comments are "She sounds like Amy Lee" When the song is finished AMy Lee disappears from the comparison stakes. Yeah Floor is one of a kind
Great reaction!! Nightwish is a very deep rabbit hole, where every song is different with unexpected twists and turns. Virtuoso musicians, a genius songwriter (Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player whom many call the "metal Mozart" is a master of emotion and melody), and the best lead singer alive today (Floor Jansen can sing anything, from operatic highs to full metal growls) - and bassist Marco Hietala is a metal legend and also has an incredible voice (and when he sings harmony with Floor - it is pure gold). Their studio tracks are great, but their live performances are phenomenal, Nightwish is one of the best live bands of all time. I've never heard a bad song from them (at least not live with Floor). To get a sample of their diversity I highly recommend any of these live performances, which are some of my personal favorites: (From Wacken 2013): Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Amaranth, Song Of Myself, Last Ride Of The Day, Ever Dream; (From Wembley 2015): 7 Days To The Wolves, Yours Is An Empty Hope, Nemo, Elan, My Walden, While Your Lips Are Still Red, Shudder Before The Beautiful, The Poet And The Pendulum; (From Tampere 2015): Sleeping Sun, The Islander; (From Buenos Aires 2018): I Want My Tears Back, Dead Boys Poem, Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean; (From Tampa): Sahara; (From Hellfest 2022): How's The Heart, and their new official concert video (released at Christmas for the fans) of the song Tribal.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 7 years next march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Yep never gets old. I've watched 30+ reactions of this song, and it never gets old. Most of Nightwish's songs are not "epic long _scores"_ like this one, but this is still a great slap-your-face introduction to the band.

The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen. In May 2007, Nightwish announced Anette Olzon as Turunen's replacement. That September, the band released their sixth album, Dark Passion Play, which has sold almost 2 million copies. On October 1, 2012, Nightwish announced that they had parted ways with Olzon and would be finishing the tour with at that time ReVamp vocalist (ex-After Forever) Floor Jansen.

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. Nightwish with Floor is the absolute pinnacle of the symphonic metal genre, a very deep rabbit hole to go down. Found them 2years ago and never get tired of them Recently I found a group called THE WARNING, 3 sisters from Mexico doing hard rock. Since you like female singers, you might wanna check them out. Two years ago my youngest son suggested I try this band, I had been trying out Amy Lee's band at the time, let me tell you this, Nightwish has ruined music for me, there isn't another band out there that can compete with them. The thing that gets me is that every song is unique, and epic in it's own right. Tuomas is a master at writing songs and every band member delivers on every song. And Floor.....she is the Swiss army knife of singers, she can do it all. Check out NIGHTWISH - Yours Is An Empty Hope (LIVE IN MEXICO CITY)..Floor is the one growling at the 1:45 mark.
Floor can sing literally anything... we're not exaggerating when we say that. There's a video of her singing a phone book during a Dutch radio interview. From breathy whispers to full on belts to deep growls... everything!! And does it with such emotion. Nightwish are special. Been following them since the 2003. I've the pleasure to have seen them twice over here in the UK. Sometimes it really is difficult to express just how good they are. Go down the rabbit hole. You will not be disappointed and we will join you in your journey 😊

One of the songs that will no doubt get brought up is Phantom of the Opera. There are 4 versions of it on RUclips. 1 with Floor and Henk porrt, 1 with Tarja and Marco, 1 with Floor and Jaccim at a Christmas metal event ( this is I believe before she joined nightwish also) and 1 that is a fan-made one that mixes the previous 2 I mentioned. My suggestion is that you listen to the fan made one first. Marco is the best phantom for the arrangement that is used by nightwish, some have said even Weber liked Marcos phantom.

There are TONS of bands like this: Epica, Delain, Ad Infinitum, Therion, Sirenia, Exit Eden, Leave's Eyes, Tristania and Xandria to name a few of the most known ones, but here's the catch: All European bands, and that is why you have never heard of them. An entire subgenre of metal is waiting behind the Atlantic Ocean.

Well, now that you've touched Nightwish, you absolutely must do WinterSun - Sons of Winter and Stars (Live Rehearsal at Sonic Pump Studios). It doesn't really get more epic than WinterSun. I don't throw around the word masterpiece like a lot of people like to do now-a-days, but just about everything Jari has written for WinterSun could be considered a masterpiece in my eyes.

@@driftervoyages Truthfully, no other countries can touch the Finnish when it comes to metal. The Germans get close, but they are generally a bit too much on the industrial/power metal side to really hit super hard for me. The Finns just have a certain melancholy to a lot of their music that fits so perfectly in metal.

Theres the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy led by Alissa White Gluz from Montreal Quebec. All insanely talented.

Wacken is THE Metal festival in the world, there is no bigger stage than this one. You just experienced the tip of the iceberg of Nightwish and their current (and final) singer Floor Jansen, together they are a powerhouse that blows everyone away. Some of us do not like to compare her to Amy Lee, Amy is an outstanding singer but Floor can sing circles around Amy, she's at a whole other level, with all respect to Amy because i do think she is an outstanding singer as well, thing is... Floor just operates at a whole different level of perfection. Quite literally, you've not seen or heard anything yet of what this band brings to the table, obviously this is one of their biggest songs, but i would dare to say, it is not even remotely to being their best song. (tbh, it kind of is impossible to pick a best song, they are so incredibly diverse that picking just the one, is impossible for me) Gabriel Bardac will provide you a LOT of information, i already saw him in the comments, his list of songs will show you every aspect of the band and of Floor, a perfect list to get to know the band inside out, and you'll still have countless of songs to discover after that. Back on Amy Lee, in this song.. everyone can hear there are similarities to her stylings, but once you have more songs under your belt, you'll see that Floor has a much wider range, going from angelic, operatic, to pop, rock, distortion and even death-growls (and anything in between), she's the gift that keeps on giving, a true vocal Cornucopia of endless abilities. For that reason we've given her the honorary title of "The Valkyrie", a vocal warrior who reaches inside your soul to find the emotions you've forgotten you had. The band leader is Tuomas, also known as "The Metal Mozart" because he composes all the music they create, he goes beyond "simple" song writing, he creates compositions. Funny enough, you'd think that Floor is the only singer they have, but technically they have two lead singers, Floor and the bass player Marko, and when they sing together... omg the contrast is so powerful and it works so incredibly well, their voices compliment each other so well, which should tell you that his abilities are on par with hers. To check him out as the lead, i strongly suggest their tribute to Pink Floyd's "High Hopes", and tribute is the correct term here, it goes beyond being a cover, it truly is a tribute. So... that all being said, welcome to the Nightwish army, because sooner rather than later, you will become a true fan like all of us, one song to get a taste, a second song to get the flavor, and a 3rd song for the final dish.. and you will be sold for life, and from then on you're going to do what we all do, show this music to everyone you know because ... everyone needs to know this band. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

First of all, Amy Lee wishes! You haven't heard of them because the American music industry doesn't make any money from them, hence the entire machine grinds to a halt on European bands. You just found the greatest composer of my lifetime, with a virtuoso band who can deliver his music properly. Nightwish is the greatest band on the planet, and being American, I had to work to find them. I found them back in their early days, loved what I heard, but didn't like the original singer, so I drifted away from them. The studio version is that original singer, so the style is not quite the same. This is the definitive version of this song. Every song is unique, no derivative repetition, and each is a masterpiece in it's own right. Floor can sing any and every style, so the catalog is quite varied. Enjoy your journey, it was the greatest of my life.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal and Nightwish. Formed in 1996, they are from Finland, 3rd and current lead singer, Floor Jansen (Yan-sen) is Dutch(today is her birthday). She had only been with the band about 10 months at this concert in front of 82k, having taken over mid tour. If you check out the studio version (from the 2004 Once album), you will hear original lead singer Tarja Turunen. Song #13 of 15 here, all songs were recorded with one of the first 2 singers, Floor added her touches, including the ending on this, and made them her own. GLS is one of their 3 longest songs. 9 albums to date, # 10 to be released later this year.
The band mastermind is the keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen. He writes 90-95% of the songs. The "pipes" are a facade in front of 3 Korg keyboards (and a wine bottle holder lol). They are a tribute to Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, and made to resemble the Sibelius monument in Helsinki. Wacken is in Germany, so it is pronounced (Vah-ken).

Agreed. Amy is a great singer with a very strong voice, but she does not sing in an operatic, or even a classical, style, so I'm not sure where the endless YT Evanescence comparisons come from. I'm an American and an Evanescence fan, but it never occurred to me to equate the two. Then again, I was a Nightwish fan before Evanescence ever released an album.

I scream everytime I hear them mentioned in relation to Nightwish, and I love Evanescence. There is no comparison. And no, Amy can't even hold Floor's beer. Both bands were established in the same year, and Nightwish still pulls over 50K fans to festivals and I haven't even heard of a Evanescence tour. They are basically an American pop band by comparison, and a rather good one, but there is no true comparison.

Great reaction!! Nightwish is a very deep rabbit hole, where every song is different with unexpected twists and turns. Virtuoso musicians, a genius songwriter (Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player whom many call the "metal Mozart" is a master of emotion and melody), and the best lead singer alive today (Floor Jansen can sing anything, from operatic highs to full metal growls) - and bassist Marco Hietala is a metal legend and also has an incredible voice (and when he sings harmony with Floor - it is pure gold). Their studio tracks are great, but their live performances are phenomenal, Nightwish is one of the best live bands of all time. I've never heard a bad song from them (at least not live with Floor). To get a sample of their diversity I highly recommend any of these live performances, which are some of my personal favorites: (From Wacken 2013): Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Amaranth, Song Of Myself, Last Ride Of The Day, Ever Dream; (From Wembley 2015): 7 Days To The Wolves, Yours Is An Empty Hope, Nemo, Elan, My Walden, While Your Lips Are Still Red, Shudder Before The Beautiful, The Poet And The Pendulum; (From Tampere 2015): Sleeping Sun, The Islander; (From Buenos Aires 2018): I Want My Tears Back, Dead Boys Poem, Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean; (From Tampa): Sahara; (From Hellfest 2022): How's The Heart, and their new official concert video (released at Christmas for the fans) of the song Tribal.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 7 years next march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band from Kitee. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen.
In May 2007, Nightwish announced Anette Olzon as Turunen's replacement. That September, the band released their sixth album, Dark Passion Play, which has sold almost 2 million copies.

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
You are Correct, This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany).

Two years ago my youngest son suggested I try this band, I had been trying out Amy Lee's band at the time, let me tell you this, Nightwish has ruined music for me, there isn't another band out there that can compete with them. The thing that gets me is that every song is unique, and epic in it's own right. Tuomas is a master at writing songs and every band member delivers on every song. And Floor.....she is the Swiss army knife of singers, she can do it all. Check out NIGHTWISH - Yours Is An Empty Hope (LIVE IN MEXICO CITY)..Floor is the one growling at the 1:45 mark.

Floor can sing literally anything... we're not exaggerating when we say that. There's a video of her singing a phone book during a Dutch radio interview. From breathy whispers to full on belts to deep growls... everything!! And does it with such emotion. Nightwish are special. Been following them since the 2003. I've the pleasure to have seen them twice over here in the UK. Sometimes it really is difficult to express just how good they are. Go down the rabbit hole. You will not be disappointed and we will join you in your journey 😊

One of the songs that will no doubt get brought up is Phantom of the Opera. There are 4 versions of it on RUclips. 1 with Floor and Henk porrt, 1 with Tarja and Marco, 1 with Floor and Jaccim at a Christmas metal event ( this is I believe before she joined nightwish also) and 1 that is a fan-made one that mixes the previous 2 I mentioned. My suggestion is that you listen to the fan made one first. Marco is the best phantom for the arrangement that is used by nightwish, some have said even Weber liked Marcos phantom.

There are TONS of bands like this: Epica, Delain, Ad Infinitum, Therion, Sirenia, Exit Eden, Leave's Eyes, Tristania and Xandria to name a few of the most known ones, but here's the catch: All European bands, and that is why you have never heard of them. An entire subgenre of metal is waiting behind the Atlantic Ocean.

Well, now that you've touched Nightwish, you absolutely must do WinterSun - Sons of Winter and Stars (Live Rehearsal at Sonic Pump Studios).
It doesn't really get more epic than WinterSun. I don't throw around the word masterpiece like a lot of people like to do now-a-days, but just about everything Jari has written for WinterSun could be considered a masterpiece in my eyes.

@@driftervoyages Truthfully, no other countries can touch the Finnish when it comes to metal. The Germans get close, but they are generally a bit too much on the industrial/power metal side to really hit super hard for me.
The Finns just have a certain melancholy to a lot of their music that fits so perfectly in metal.
More insane woman who front metal bands are Nightwish's heavier sibling known as Epica. They are fronted by the gorgeous vocals of Simone Simons. Nightwishes lighter sibling is Within Temptation led by Sharon Del Adel. Both bands are Dutch. You mentioned Jinjer so you know know Tatiana Shmayluk of Jinjer. Theres the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy led by Alissa White Gluz from Montreal Quebec. All insanely talented.

Wacken is THE Metal festival in the world, there is no bigger stage than this one.
You just experienced the tip of the iceberg of Nightwish and their current (and final) singer Floor Jansen, together they are a powerhouse that blows everyone away.
Some of us do not like to compare her to Amy Lee, Amy is an outstanding singer but Floor can sing circles around Amy, she's at a whole other level, with all respect to Amy because i do think she is an outstanding singer as well, thing is... Floor just operates at a whole different level of perfection.
Quite literally, you've not seen or heard anything yet of what this band brings to the table, obviously this is one of their biggest songs, but i would dare to say, it is not even remotely to being their best song. (tbh, it kind of is impossible to pick a best song, they are so incredibly diverse that picking just the one, is impossible for me)
Gabriel Bardac will provide you a LOT of information, i already saw him in the comments, his list of songs will show you every aspect of the band and of Floor, a perfect list to get to know the band inside out, and you'll still have countless of songs to discover after that.
Back on Amy Lee, in this song.. everyone can hear there are similarities to her stylings, but once you have more songs under your belt, you'll see that Floor has a much wider range, going from angelic, operatic, to pop, rock, distortion and even death-growls (and anything in between), she's the gift that keeps on giving, a true vocal Cornucopia of endless abilities.
For that reason we've given her the honorary title of "The Valkyrie", a vocal warrior who reaches inside your soul to find the emotions you've forgotten you had.
The band leader is Tuomas, also known as "The Metal Mozart" because he composes all the music they create, he goes beyond "simple" song writing, he creates compositions.
Funny enough, you'd think that Floor is the only singer they have, but technically they have two lead singers, Floor and the bass player Marko, and when they sing together... omg the contrast is so powerful and it works so incredibly well, their voices compliment each other so well, which should tell you that his abilities are on par with hers.
To check him out as the lead, i strongly suggest their tribute to Pink Floyd's "High Hopes", and tribute is the correct term here, it goes beyond being a cover, it truly is a tribute.
So... that all being said, welcome to the Nightwish army, because sooner rather than later, you will become a true fan like all of us, one song to get a taste, a second song to get the flavor, and a 3rd song for the final dish.. and you will be sold for life, and from then on you're going to do what we all do, show this music to everyone you know because ... everyone needs to know this band.
