I think those are called Sticklebacks south of the border. The pike family has three breeds really, Muskellunge, Northern Pike and Pickerel. You can t ell them apart by the scaling on their gills and faces, and some times the markings. Interestingly enough a "Walleyed Pike" is not a pike, but a perch!
There is every fish that Upstate NY has in that Canal !! Some of the best small mouth fishing I have ever done there, The walleye is very good also, There is Pike and Muskie and they are BIG ! Its very deceiving, most people have no idea of the how good the fishing can be there.

@@143Chippy143 around Utica all I ever saw in there were big Carp and Creek Suckers. Need to get up there and fish with you some day
