  • Hi Guys and welcome back to the channel.
    I've bought a Honda XL 250 1982. This bike hasn't seen the light of day in the last 15 years, it now comes under a classic classification, over 40 years old. My plan is to take it apart, refresh all the components and make it look like new again. This is my first ever project and I'm no mechanic, so I might need all the help you guys can offer.
    So sit back, relax and enjoy part one of this rebuild!

      Thanks. I’m not expert on doing restoration but really enjoyed the learning the bike. I’ve still got it and I’m hoping to do some videos when the weathers better. I don’t think I could ever get tired of this bike. A timeless classic for sure 👍

    When rebuilding a motorcycle, a very important point is that the chassis is healthy and not bent. Because sometimes it has been observed that the wheels are not in line with each other and the front wheel and rear wheel should be in the same line.

      When I bought the bike, this particular one was a eBay auction where the guy had owned three of them for very long time and the communication was very good but yes you are right. This is something that could be quite easily overlooked.

      That’s great news, this is a first for me for doing a restoration, so I’m not sure how much I can do myself but I hope you enjoy the videos. I’m looking forward to the ride when it’s finished. I’ve bought a few parts from the US it’s getting hard to find stuff here. Many thanks for the comment 👍

    own the same bike - 1982 xlr 250 since one year. Great fun bike. milage 40K. some minor repairs in need for some fresh seals fe on the gear change pedal to engine. RPM meter needle broke off. dont know how to open that instrument…

    • @thatbikersimon
      @thatbikersimon  10 месяцев назад

      It sounds like you have a classic 1982 XL 250 motorcycle that's been a lot of fun to ride. With 40,000 miles on it, it's natural that it needs some minor repairs. Replacing seals, especially around the gear change pedal, is a common maintenance task. As for the broken RPM meter needle, fixing it typically involves carefully opening the instrument cluster.
      If you're not comfortable doing these repairs yourself, taking it to a professional mechanic who specializes in vintage motorcycles. They would have the right tools and expertise to handle these tasks. I don’t think I would attempt this but let me know how you get on. It’s a great bike and I’m looking forward to doing some future rides and videos on this. 👍

    Can a gauge cluster ie the Speedo and neutral/high beam/indicator be refurbished? That plastic and lens crack over time. Don’t want to replace with a different for fear of losing the mileage

      Honestly I don’t know the answer, I’m guessing in the right hands probably I can be. Where you based? In the uk the have some classic dirt bike shows with real experts that would know the answer.

    I have the same bike. The chain drags along the frame just after the sprocket. Should there be a roller or guide to stop this? Too tight and when I sit on the bike the chain is too tight. Too loose and it drags on the lower frame when I'm not on the bike.

      @@martynjames5963 I had to get a mate to make me the guide because I couldn’t get one. He 3D printed it and then made it out of nylon which it was originally. I can’t remember how the chain sits now without looking at it.

    Very silly to have an exemption for the MOT for older vehicles. It means in order to operate on the roads your vehicle needs to be certified safe, unless it is older.

    • @thatbikersimon
      @thatbikersimon  Год назад

      I don’t make the rules but I guess there is true in that statement. I personally will make sure it is safe as would most guys riding on the road.
