I just started this video but I just want to say that as someone with a degree in Social and Cultural Analysis from New York University (which included a class entirely on Black feminism), I can't believe this is the first time in my life I'm hearing this woman's name. YOU'RE DOING SUCH IMPORTANT WORK, BAILEY! And I'm not even paying you a quarter milli in tuition 🤯
Interesting, 10 years prior to the Civil War it was fomenting. In the North East now, the saying, “John Brown’s dead” is a battle cry for the Union. I saw it on internet posts during the time when people were threatening civil unrest in the US today.
Bailey... I freaking love you! You have (pretty much) single handedly made me distrust my government and every history book I've ever read. You really should compile a dark history book with all the episodes you've done. You could release one every season! I would proudly display my Encyclopedia de Bailey on my bookshelf!
Thanks for sharing Mary Ellen Pleasant's story Bailey. Her story made me think of Maggie Lena Walker, who was the first Black woman to charter a bank. She also was a business woman who gave fellow Black women opportunities to work outside of the traditional housekeeping jobs and encouraged young and old to save their money. Her story is interesting if you have a chance to look into it.
😂 I am laying in bed watching you and then you had an ad brake. you mentioned pickles. That's my cats name and she got excited. Pickles went up to the TV. She thought you had something for her. 😅 My furry little hippo thought you had treats. 😂🤣🤣
You gave Mama Plesant the ending she deserved. I love history and have heard the story of John Brown and Harper's Ferry. This is the first ever heard of Ms. Pleasant. ✌️
I'm so thankful that you're out here telling the truth in your Dark history podcasts. This kind of story makes my blood boil so, it needs to be said loud and clear! When I think of the sheer lack of power afforded to them, the complete lack of empathy for another human, it eats away at me. We have come a long way but not nearly far enough.
Thank you so much for sharing her story! In school we were always told the first black female millionaire was Madame CJ Walker. Although she also did amazing things, I’m so glad I learned something new today! ❤️❤️
She did preface it with first black female in California. I thought of Madame CJ Walker as well so I’m thinking that she was just referring to California. 41:39
Everyday im learning something new school never thought me or I haven’t heard of. I’m glad there’s people like you teaching us our own history that we need to know. She sounds like an amazing woman. People should know her story. Now I do, thank you.
we’re 30 minutes into the session and my bf looks up at our group of friends and says “have y’all ever watched bailey sarian?” stone faced, dead serious
Will you do the life history of Sarah Rector. She was an African American girl given 160 at 11 years of age in 1906. It was thought to be not so great land, but she struck oil and became one of the 1st African American millionaires in her era. Please do a video on her. I love your channels. You are such a great story teller.
You should do a dark history on Bonnie and Clyde! I always thought it was wild how the townspeople tore the possessions/clothes off of them when they were brought into town after the shooting!
Normally a MMM viewer because I’m well-versed in a lot of your topics here, but I am ever so excited to dive into this video specifically!! Love the work you do girl, keep it up 🖤
I lived across the street from the site of her home in SF for almost 10 years. I discovered her story through the huge plaque on the ground between the gigantic trees that she planted with her own hands. She was and is and amazing woman! If anyone wants to visit, the original trees and site of her home are across the street from the Queen Anne hotel (and former girls school) in Lower Pacific Heights. 💜💜💜
What an amazing episode. I’m always so blown away by what you cover and how you fit in so much detail. This story is so important, it’s insane but unsurprising that we didn’t learn it in school!! Can’t wait for the dark history of dog breeding. Definitely a story I want to hear!!
maaaaaybe it's because I've watched for so long, but, I can definitely hear the difference as you speak. had you not pointed out your nasal complications prior to surgery, I never would've known. very well done👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿. I'm glad that you were finally able to get that corrected.🎉
This story was informative but so gut wrenching! This women was amazing and I’m so glad you are telling her story like it is so we can know the truth! I am thankful for you because I wouldn’t have ever been aware of this amazing woman! ❤
Thank you @Bailey for giving us more poc history! Since you've just made my week, hope the rest of yours is super awesome ✨ Edit: Whaling is a freaking great topic for Dark History! Seriously!
This was a great story! I've been on such a Dark History binge lately! Could you research and do an episode on the missing princes in the Tower of London? It's so fascinating to me!
Ohhh The Amish in Indiana/ Ohio/ Michigan are Doing horrible things To Dogs! breeding dogs in puppy mills. Their View On Animals IS VERY DIFFERENT THAN MOST OF OURS.
How about discussing the cruelty of ear cropping, tail docking, and dewclaw removal, along with it? As a prior vet tech, I’m shocked it’s still legal in the USA to surgically alter your dog’s features for looks! Not only is it horribly painful to the puppies, but it can put them at a disadvantage. All because people want a certain look, but don’t want to take the proper care to breed that trait through the selective breeding of generations. 😢
Oh, and most Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are so poorly bred nowadays, that they can no longer birth (whelp) their own offspring without a cesarean section!
Thank you for sharing this, I believe I have heard of her before, but as school brings up the underground railroad, like you said Harriet Tubman is the first you remember. Thank you for sharing, much love to you.
Could you do an episode on the civil war? 😵 thanks to you I’m more interested in American history! Thank you Bailey for saving us time on researching history and making it juicy 😚🤝🏼💖
I look forward to Dark History every week and it gets me through my cardio at the gym. Love listening to you. I’m from East Tennessee and would love for you to cover the history of the Hatfield and McCoys family feud ❤
43:33 Who is going to tell Abbie that neither of Anne Bolelyn's children had any of children of their own? It was kind of a very big deal that neither Mary I nor Elizabeth I bore any children.
Thank you so much for sharing this story!! That comment you read out about Ann Berlin made me think... It would be interesting to learn more about the lives of Henry the 8ths wives
I always love your Podcast. But your commercial for Dispy using A Court Of Thorn and Rose's was hilarious. I love that series so much my cat is named Princess Feyre.
Bailey (and gang) ❤ the only woman to ever make me tear up consistently for non sad reasons ... 😊 BRAVO I SAY! ....bravo ( slow clap that evolves to standing ovation) ✌️😎
Thank you Bailey and team for educating us, because schools aren't! 👏 I feel like there's some really interesting history surrounding the great lakes and what they've been used for... and what is sunk at the bottom of them....
I feel like history text books, skim over women in history but put a spotlight on mean. Thank you so much for covering this amazing women. Can't wait to learn about the other 3 next week!
Belle Star ran around this area a lot . About an hour from here is Robber's Cave State Park - a short hike uphill and you can explore the actual cave. The whole area is breathtaking and worth a visit. You can rent a cabin, ride in a paddle boat, swim, or take a horse on the trails. If you go in the fall, it's spectacular to see the colors of the leaves all over the hills/mountains.
Hey Bailey! It would be great if you could do an episode about the 'Starlight Tours' or Saskatoon freezing deaths caused by the RCMP in Canada. Love your show!!
Thank you! I love little heard history and stories like this I can pass to my kids (who always are more likely to listen to a fantastic RUclips retelling than a history class anyway) to help them grow knowledge they can enjoy and thrive from!
Maybe because Mademe CJ Walker was from both black parents whereas Mary Ellen Pleasant was biracial so technically Madame CJ Walker is still the first 🤷🏾♀️ that’s how I see it I guess
Bailey!! Thank you for another amazing video. Can you please do a Dark History on a makeup brand or something like Sephora? There's a lot of tea to be spilled..
I'm so glad to see you back I was so worried about you and really wanted to reach out and see if you were ok but obviously I can't so that so just know I love you so much and I'm so fair to see your okay❤

honestly me too bailey is really that girl when it comes to revealing the dark horrible past of very important people
Hahaha so true!

"I'd rather be a corpse than a coward" is giving the same energy as my favorite Spanish motto "Antes muerte que sencillo" or death before dull
That was quite a remarkable story. A movie needs to be made.

My grandmother's grandfather and Belle Starr's father were brothers. I'm stoked you're covering her next week!!
Thank you for highlighting Mary’s story. So many can get forgotten about but they are just as important.
I'm angry at Thomas Bell's wife... What she did to Mary Ellen is unacceptable. I'm interested to know what karmic retribution she received.
