Congrats man! I passed my IFR checkride on March 8th, 2021. I had an unpublished hold, then an ILS approach Then unusual attitude recovery I had a partial panel approach on an RNAV GPS approach where my DPE took my attitude and heading indicator. Then I finished with VOR Circling approach. I agree that the flight was easier than the oral portion.
My checkride upcoming. I've been advised that DPEs may no longer have test candidates fly unpublished anything! Anyone care to confirm? Anyway, Pilotmicah's checkride hold is published on the ILS or LOC RWY 25R to DAB approach plate.
Micah, great feedback and glad I watched this video a week before my test. My oral was (also) more scenario based. I just passed and got my ticket the other day. Woo-hooo! I’m so psyched. Damn, that WAS hard!
Congratulations man, I really appreciate your insight on IFR checkride, I’m taking my checkride very soon, right now every information is vital for me, so your video gave me a big confidence! Keep up the good work!
Fantastic information! Just took the Written today, I only need .2 more hours instruction, and we are starting the annual on our Cherokee tomorrow so I will hopefully be scheduling the checkride in 1-2 weeks 🤞
*thank you so much for making this!! I’m getting ready for my IR checkride in about a month, (and plan on making a video as well) and your video helps relieve some of the stress because it gives me reassurance in what to expect.* congrats on your pass!!
So I'm thinking about joining ATP fresh, going to the intro flight soon to verify I want to be a pilot. So of course everything in this video is over my head. This is so much information, I'm hoping that I can keep up with it being such a short amount of time. It's a bit overwhelming but my hope is that with studying and application it's not that big of a deal lol
Hey man, I really appreciate the video. Helps me feel calmer about my upcoming instrument checkride. Did your DPE not have you do any compass turns? Also, could you clarify what you mean by 1.3 for the circle to land? Is that a reference to distance from the runway before starting the circle?
Not really sure what you mean by compass turns, but never had to use my compass just the heading indicator. Yes, since my approach category speed is in Category A, my circling minimum are 1.3 nm to the runway.
@@pilot_micah thanks for that response! Yea, my flight school has us do a lot of compass turns to simulate AHRS failure. Making sure we can turn via the compass and demonstrate the ability to undershoot north and overshoot south.
Timothy interesting, can’t say that I’ve ever actually done that, but couldn’t hurt just Incase. Only thing my DPE failed was the airspeed indicator on the ILS approach. Good luck on the checkride tho!

Great video, really appreciate you sharing your experience!
Thanks for the tip on the Pirep form. Found that on the FAA site and added it to my checkride binder.
Excellent video. Taking my IFR Airplane checkride in a few weeks. Thank you and congratulations.
Congratulations on your check ride, thanx for sharing it.
Your DPE sounds pretty laid back if you ask me. Pro tip: take your CFII written test asap while everything is still fresh.
Joe Smith he was a good dude for sure, challenging but definitely fair. And yea that’s what I did, took it the same day and got a 90+ on both
Thank you so much for the really really helpful video

@@pilot_micah thanks! Gratz on your newish rating and good luck on the comm and multi comm!
Timothy actually have both of those already, working on CFI ratings now!
Amazing thanks! Got mine coming up in a week or so!
Dev patel good luck!
Good luck! Did you pass?(:
Who was your dpe in Daytona?
yewww! thank you!
Just curious- I have a Daytona area instrument checkride tomorrow, which dpe did you go with?
Was your LOC approach your partial panel? Also did he dim your pfd or just cover the glideslope?
If I remember right I’m pretty sure it was the ILS that was partial panel. He just covered it with a sticky note
🤙
