  • The Safe Drinking Water Act turns 50 in 2024 - and the American Water Works Association is celebrating!
Our Association’s new President, Cheryl Porter (Chief Operating Officer, Great Lakes Water Authority) is passionate about the leading role SDWA has played in public health advancements.
“The Safe Drinking Water Act was passed to safeguard the public health and safety of all U.S. citizens, by setting high standards for the nation’s drinking water,” says Porter. “A safe, reliable water supply plays a critical role in our day-to-day lives - and it’s significant in the quality of life we enjoy.”
SDWA is one of the top reasons why U.S. consumers can trust that their tap water is safe to drink. This landmark federal legislation is administered via science-based EPA regulations that apply to all water utilities and water systems of all sizes. Since its passage in 1972, SDWA has been updated repeatedly to address emerging threats to our drinking water, and new opportunities to address water quality challenges.

Porter acknowledges that water systems face many challenges. She also emphasizes: “We must remember that safe drinking water is a shared responsibility, and we must all advocate for its protection. AWWA and its members have been at the forefront of this transformative journey. Together, we will continue to make progress, advance innovative solutions, and advocate for the funding and policies necessary to ensure access to safe drinking water for future generations.”
At AWWA, our passion is supporting and equipping water utilities and professionals, so they can excel in reliably providing safe drinking water. Water community gatherings like ACE (AWWA’s Annual Conference and Exposition) and other professional events are important for sharing the latest research, insights, and experiences that help water professionals do their best work.
