Dylan Talks Tone Recieves Commision From Some Of These Links
Enjoyed this video. I am lucky to have few friends who appreciate guitars and their enthusiasm is infectious. Seeing them react to a new guitar or piece of gear makes me happy. I have many more guitars than my guitar skills would warrant, but i enjoy the whole process of finding interesting guitars.
I have a buddy who was a gigging and recording musician years ago. Mostly a singer but he also played guitar and keyboard. He truly, honestly didn't care about what the guitar was. He played absolute junk with old strings and no setup whatsoever. He knew what a Les Paul was, only cause his name is Paul. Other than that he didn't know anything about guitars and never cared to. He just needed something with strings to sing with. There are people out there who are extremely skilled guitarists that don't care about guitar the way we do in our guitar enthusiast echo chamber. Me, I love guitar. I like to play, collect, modify. There's a guitar with me everywhere I go. I'll play any guitar, cheap, expensive, don't matter. I'll play any amp be it Tube, Solid State, Modeler. I love to experiment with pedals, I love it all man!
From Leo: I agree with your opinion about liking different things. In the late 1960's there were not many choices, especially in smaller towns. No internet, just guitar magazines. They were also hard to afford. If a guy got a guitar you would be happy for him and he would play something. Maybe he would let you try it. They were all cool. We did not put down what the other guy had.
These days people come into the store and start looking at guitars, you hear "the you tube guy says the neck is too thick" or some other opinion. they parrot hundreds of opinions and talk down about every guitar. They never celebrate that their buddy really likes it and can play it really well.
I do both... collect and play. LOVE MY GIBSON'S!! 😊
I’m more of a player (not a good one) and enthusiast. The only things I’m interested in collecting are friends, knowledge, and experiences. But I love, love, LOVE seeing other people’s guitar collections. I simply cannot get enough of seeing all the beautiful guitars that are out there, and learning about their characteristics. And don’t even get me started about the weird and unique ones! Guitars… what a cool thing to be interested in.
The cool thing about guitars is that you can make them what you would like. I have a Fender strat that I love, whereas I totally dig my Squier Tele that I paid $150.00 for. You can turn a guitar into anything. If I had the money, I would have no problem dumping 15 grand. I also think spending $200 on a Slick off guitar fetish is great. I set up a Squier Strat for my friend and gave it to him. I spent $80 on the guitar, but took the time to dial it in for him. The look on his face was as much of a gift for me as the guitar was for him. To me, that means more than if I spent a couple grand and shipped it to him. I painted the guitar, re-wired it, dropped new pick-ups in it, new tuning machines. I got rid of the fret sprout, cut a new nut. Cost me nothing but time and that's a gift. In my mind, there's a story behind the guitar and when my friend plays it he caqn feel that there was love that went into it and it was for him. He watched me work on it in my studio. The night I finished it, I handed it to him and said, "There you go, bro. Beat the hell out of it." Heasked if I wanted to play it first and it hadn't sunk in. I'm not trying to talk myself up at all. I'm older than this kid and I hope he plays it when I go. He will never sell it and it will have meaning. Hopefully one day he wills it to somebody else. It comes down to love. I'm a collector, an enthusiast, and not a very good player, but I play every day. I dig your videos. I've learned a lot from you, not only the technical side of things, but the way you feel about the instrument is contagious.
Dylan: *hands me a pink guitar*
Me: *has something to say about it.*
Me: F*** yes.
Absolutely loved this podcast! This relates to everything, not just guitars.
And watching some of your old ones after finding your channel recently, definitely connected on the dirtbike side. Just getting into guitar after getting hurt too many times and switching my main hobby up to playing not racing….. hard-core KTM fan, but I still love all motorcycles. Saving up and can’t wait to get your telecaster pick ups and wiring kit.
Some excellent (imho) philosophy being expressed here. Kudos!! I wish more people thought like this. "I applaud people that understand that other people like stuff that I don't like"
I think you give the Epiphone guys too much credit as enthusiasts with simple firm opinions, I bet 90% want or at least would like to have the Gibson and for some reason they need to settle for the Epiphone and just can't make it happen currently. Sad part of people is and I quote an old friend. Too many people think they can make their candle look to burn brighter by blowing out the candles of those around them. I am twice your age and have just seen it so much, in some cases it has made me sinical but also a realist. I know I am an enthusiast, I just love guitars. it is the beauty combined with craftsmanship. I can barely play but continue to try all the time. I am not sure playing is in me ?? I have many guitars and have been collecting for 20 years. $200 up to $1200 over over the years but some of my strats just turned 20 the day I turned 60 last weekend and have never been played and only seen daylight 3-4 times. Dumb I know. but it feeds my soul for some reason. I practice on a $100 parts tele and use it to try and bring my ability to a level I feel like deserves to play the nicer stuff. I am even building myself another tele currently with a sub 5 lb target weight cause "I" like that for me. Maybe we can hook up on some pickups... I like low thumpy bridge slapback sound of rockabilly. I am rambling but you inspired me to do it I suppose :)
I am an enthusiastic collector, lol and proud.
I do everything I can daily to make a visit to our Vet clinic and experience, Engage the pet, engage the owner, engage their family and give them and their pet a positive experience.
I'll buy whatever I want, everyone else can buy what they want. I don't care what they spend, and they shouldn't care what I spend.
Yes the guitar is a tool, but you can get excited and interested in learning more about your tools.
I know people like that. They talk about new tools being made and what they have and what they want- They get excited about it, just like guitar players do, so even if they are tools, we can get excited about them.
I am more a player and enthusiast mix, not really a collector in the sense that I don’t care about resale or collectors’ value. (If you do, hey that’s cool, just not my thing.) I own the guitars I do because they do different things.
People need to just learn not to be a jerk. I deal with them every day. It's no fun. Fortunately few and far between, except for one of my bosses...
You are 100 percent on point Dead on
I know electric guitars very well and keep up with them, but I’m definitely more of a bass player and enthusiast, but too poor to be a collector lmao I’ve owned a number of em, gave a couple away. Atm I have a low end Rogue 5 string, mid range Ibanez 6 string, and a Premium Ibanez 5 string so I have one at at least each price point. Guns and knives are my second passion. But I dont go crazy with them because I dont have disposable income like that. I typically save for a long time and buy the one that I’m really into most at the time, then just keep up with the news, innovations, etc., and enjoy what I do have .
Many guitar players may qualify for the moniker "tool", but all instruments designed for artistic expression (even the very cheapest available new) are more than that.
I think of an instrument as an elevated version of a tool. tape measure = tool, vernier calipers = instrument. Both have their place, do you need inches or thou?
I don't mind if I am remembered for not liking Brussels sprouts, I'm sure my family and friends will get a good laugh out of that when I'm gone......... I certainly don't want to remembered as the grumpy guy who didn't like anything.
Killer hat, Dylan

I decided a 5K Gibson wasn't what I needed. I bought a heap of gear, guitars and a drum set instead. 😎
yeah, I paid thousands less than 5 k for my new Gibson too
@@DylanTalksTone Yes. I don't mean they're all that price. It was a 2015 R40 Lifeson Crimson. 😅
Dylan, what's the story behind that artwork behind you? Looks very interesting 😎
I know, i know...I said behind twice in the same sentence..
😀😀😀
