  • Build an inexpensive recumbent trike carrier, fast and easy. Total cost about $130 compared to $300 to $400 for commercial carriers.

I bought the same carrier and i flipped it over, now you have several places to secure a longer piece of channel for the rear tire. Flipping the rack also lowers it making loading easier and it lets your car tail lights show much better. And finally, you can flip the rack back over and use it as normal when needed.
I used 1 1/2'' pvc pipe to make a similar rack for the front tires, cheap and sturdy, works great. Yours looks very nice, great job! I love seeing all the different ideas people come up with. I hope this tip helps,

Great hack. How did you attach the PVC pipe to the rack?

Can you provide the measurements for the length of the aluminum parts?

$300-$400 for commercial unit? Try $750, that was the best I saw.

Where did you get the end caps and led tail lights? Need to carry my wife’s upright also. I guess I could extend the aluminum or add more to accommodate her bike as well. Nice work!! Thanks for posting!

I got them both online. The end caps are form Prescott Plastics 10 Pack: 3/4 Inch Angle Iron Plastic End Caps Chair Glides. The lights are 60" strip tail lights, not sure who I purchased them through but it was online.

What is the measurement of your bike? My bike's front wheels are roughly 33" apart. Front hub to back hub is roughly 47". Does anyone know if this would work for these measurements? Thanks in advance!

If this helps, here's the carrier he's using, I believe. It does give the measurements. www.harborfreight.com/500-lb-capacity-aluminum-cargo-carrier-92655.html

How strong is the bottom platform with-out the sides? (I would like the strike to sit a bit lower. They just bolt in, correct? Is the middle bar that goes into the receiver steal - do you think I could save a few LB's by getting an Aluminum center? The trike is only 30-40 LB's Thanks

It appears very strong and yes they bolt in. The receiver post is strong steal and I would not change that to aluminum, with the bouncing of the vehicle it could bend or break, even with a light load. The 30 or 40 pounds it no problem. I kept the upper rails on in the event I wanted to put some boxes or luggage below the trike.

There’s a comment here from @jimpiccini1036 in which he says that he flips the carrier upside-down and gets a lower platform that way.
