Thank you! I've wanted to be a drummer since I was a child. I'm 57 now and had given up on the dream. I don't have a kit, but have used wooden dowel and different things from around the house for different parts of a set. I've watched lots of vids, but had to figure out the charts on my own. It was difficult. Your presentation was so helpful! A friend of mine has an extra kit. I might just borrow it. Thank you again!
I am a frustrated drummer & always intimidated by the music notes but you explained this very well...not scaring beginners such I. :) Thank You So Much! :)
Softly softly... patience and practice are the keys, as you said by sticking to your script it works so much better. Respect earned, and for those who feel sitting with a tutor is either too expensive or too square THIS is another way.
I remember beginning to learn from this video years ago, which led me to your other videos. You played a big part in shaping my music career, I'm working on a record with my band now. Thanks so much for helping all drummers!
Dude.. Hey.. I am a 54 year old, really good drummer. I was in a couple of bands up until 25 years ago. We went our separate ways as we got older. I lost touch with the skins. However, during the pandemic, I began to rebuild a Ludwig kit that is now a double-bass, amazing set.... However, I'm a player that never knew how to read or write music, much less drum music... However after watching your introductory video... I completely understand the basics after watching repeatedly, 3 times thus far😉...I get it now!!!! And this is AFTER receiving formal instruction the other day ... I just couldn't understand, until your video instruction. Sooooo, THANK YOU!!!! I may watch pt.1 another few times until it is cemented in and move on to pt.2...and so on. So thank you again from California in the states! Here in the SF bay area...✌🎼🎵
I waited till my 40 s to learn how to read music .what a difference in the what you can play and the advantages it gives you when you want to learn a new song Great video
I don't see who would dislike this ....as a professional drummer i love the fact that he teaches on a level where everyone can understand whether beginner professional or legend ..... thanks man...now no realize several things my teacher didn't teach me
Dude; you're an AWESOME teacher .thanks . I've been playing by ear since age 4 ...1974.....my peers say i "rock" ; however after pursuing an ACTUAL music career in competitive towns such as NASHVILLE ; I've been told that since I can't sight read , I ONLY have "chops" . I hate being limited . And not being able to learn pieces like : TOOL ,DREAM THEATER , SYMPHONY X, or RUSH on paper and EMULATING them. I can ONLY play by ear ; and that just SUCKS !!!! ....... EVEN WORSE. when I'm in the studio with a band ; I play from the heart but am unable to REPLICATE what I've played . I REALLY REALLY MUST learn to read and even write . Desperately your student. Daniel
Bro, at least you read it like a person actually speaks. Well done! What I can't tolerate (listen to) is someone reading a script and they read it LIKE THEY'RE READING IT! All the difference in the world. Great video!
dude, i slammed something out the other day but always been told i have no rythm and cant read music or follow a beat. but all your tutorial taught me a lot and a little about reading music. you not only taught me to read some music but how to follow a beat. as far as im concerned, best music teacher ive ever met and mission accomplished. A+ bro.
I literally cannot thank you enough, i have played drums since the age of fourteen but never took the time to learn the basics and it caught up with me. (time never allowed me the opportunity). Now that im done with university and have my degree as a dentist, I can knuckle down on the basics and you make this possible. Thank you. I am so grateful for this Regards MG
That was the best 22minutes and 23 seconds of my drumming career so far, only been playing three months but I'm loving it, this is a great video, I totally absorbed everything, you have a great way of teaching, I'm sticking with you.
Dude, you have no idea how frustrating it's been trying to understand beats and bars and measures and music theory in general. Finding your video was a godsend. Exactly what I was looking for: answers to nearly all the questions I had. So many people tried to explain it to me but they were coming from a place where the nuances were second nature; therefore, they couldn't anticipate my inaccurate assumptions. Thanks a million! You're a great teacher!
I've told my high-schools band teacher that I know how to read sheet music - I meant drums and really didn't actually know them very well, let me just say, this video helped a lot, and I can't wait to see if this was useful tomorrow when talking to him again!
I learned reading Drum Music in the early 90s when having lessons, surprised how much I had forgotten, but watching this, was bringing back a lot, thanks, I should have kept up my lessons
Hi Rob, who knew 11 years ago you would be reminding this middle age science teacher how to read drum sheet music so she could play in a high school band! Thank you from Texas!
I have been playing drums since I was 3 years old (I'm 38 now), and this is the absolute best tutorial I have ever heard on reading notation! Very clear and concise--easy to follow! Great job!!
This is fantastic and cleared up some things that had me confused for years - I didn't realise that there were several ways to join the notes and tails. None of my music teachers ever explained that! This clear explanation would benefit people learning to read music for any instrument. Thank you so much!
Hi, I've always wanted to play the drums for around the age of six. I would always tap the table with the 'roots' of my fingers and made noise, I've finally plucked up the sense and bravery to make a commitment to play the drums. I was always scared of the notes and can I just say, you have explained it in a very very easy way my friend...THANK YOU
Brother, you have a gift for teaching. You're easy to listen to, you organize your content very logically, and you just seem like a really cool person. You also taught me exactly what I was hoping to learn. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill!
When I heard from my teacher that notes were also important in drumming, my first thought was: Oh, my god! In my old days as pianist I couldnt understand any keys or syncopes and so on. Now, however, with you as a teacher, I feel much safer. And I do belive it wont be so complicated after all!
I usually don't comment on videos but I just watched all 3 parts of "How to read drum music" and I would like to say that those videos are of great quality (contents/sound/clarity). Great work!
I know just about NOTHING about playing music especially reading it but this was super helpful! I've been wanting to learn to play drums and this was a really great place to start to really understand what I was looking at during my self practice. Thanks so much for your clarity. I've watched this video 2 times through already. Joining the notes was a little confusing but on the second watch through it made more sense. Thanks again! I'll be checking out ur other vids
Fantastic. Decided after all these years I should finally bite the bullet and learn to read. Very clear and at a great slow pace! Well done for taking the time to share.
This video is so awesome, I was able to learn at a good pace watching this, pausing, taking some notes, and even playing along. And to test myself on what u just taught I would pause the vid, read and play the beat a few times by myself then play along with u to see if I was right. I'm in my school's marching band with no experience at all, I felt real behind. Thanks to ur careful explanation, I am very close to knowing how to read drum music!!! This is so great, thank you for making this video!!
Thank you very much for this. I am a drummer for 9 years in our church and i did not know about this notes and 2021 is coming and i find it out just now?. I wish i had already know this since then. You are a great teacher i hope i learn more in here. God bless 😇
Hi man, thanks a lot, you're very good teaching, I play drums pretty well, since 40 years and never could start reading or writing my parts. This video is very clear to me and encourage me to keep on learning!!! thanks a lot, I will see part 2 and 3, and hope you keep on teaching us!!!! thanks from BsAs, Argentina. Carlos
Learning theory came MUCH later. At first, all I wanted to do was play songs in my bedroom. I couldn't care less about written music...and you know what? This did me good and was a lot of fun! BUT, I would have got better quicker if I'd learnt how to read from the beginning. Still, it has to be fun. If it gets in the way of your enjoyment of playing then it's a bad thing. I had to learn that reading, theory, practice pads, rudiments...these things ARE fun too! Thanks for your question! Rob
Thank you so much for your explanations. I will challenge myself to learn reading notes (than playing only by ear or by sight). I do believe in what you said that there will be more playing opportunities to enjoy because there is no fear or intimidation when handed a music sheet.
It's been 8years n now I'm watching this video I'm going to learn how to play a drum I'm very interested to play a drumn I'm going to learn from your video thankyou sir, stay safe ❣️.
thankyou so much!, i am a 12 year old drummer still learning to play and i saw a sheet like this and didn't know what the hell it was, now i watched this video it has helped me so much; THANKYOU!!!!
Your video tutorial is so perfect. I'm a beginner at the kit, and I really want to learn how to read the charts. Thank you for your hard work and effort.
REALLY your teaching techniques is too good.and you know every 1st learners is very easily captured your lesson completely he/she. Thanks a lot.God bless you.Bye
I’ve not played drums for years and was looking for a refresher video. Your videos are brilliant, everything is explained and demonstrated really well - looking forward to watching the rest
I got band 1 in highschool and its my first time playing the snare drum. This has definitely helped me and now i get to play at the meet the rams game thursday. I really appreciate it ^_^
I always wondered how to read sheet music for drums. This video has helped me quite a lot. I will have to go back over it once or twice more to fully understand just a couple of things but it has been very helpful indeed. Thankyou so much.
Respected Sir, I have tried to learn notation from so many books , but found it a bit difficult. But the way you have explained in this video its simply too good. You have step by step explained the process which starts with simple examples and then goes in to little complex ones. I really appreciate your work in this video. Thanks a lot. Good luck.
Your video was extremely helpful!!! Really, I appreciate that you took the time to do this. I had paid for a base boot camp and found that I didn't understand the note groupings, stem direction, why some notes were tied together at the top and how that affected playing them or when to count and when to play. I was a bit overwhelmed. Your video came to the rescue and I'll be watching your part 2 and 3. Cool!!!
Thanks for the kind compliments, Tom. Glad I could help. Check out my website if you want to test your new knowledge and learn over 300 famous and popular songs on drums! Rob
Thank you so much, I know this is I years later lol but you helped me so much! I learned some of the notes and stuff in hs but I'm 32 now and couldn't tell you at all what a quarter note was! Thanks so much for making it easy to learn and relearn this stuff!
Omg thank you!! I've been a drummer for 15 years and never learnt to read music but am applying for uni drum degree and need a understanding of it! This is perfect. Thanks
Absolutely amazing. I've searched for many different teaching videos and you're by far the most understandable. Thanks for putting so much time and effort to make it absolutely perfect!
Good work Rob. "Joining Various Note Types By Their Tails" - ah, this is where I nearly switched off. I remember when I first took lessons and I thought of this as a mystery wrapped in a puzzle inside an enigma. I'd get to a point to where I thought I "got it", then I'd be shown some examples to try on my own and it would all go out the window again. It was like being back at school doing maths exercises. Anyway, you've done a good job of explaining it.
Thank you so much for this clip i am doing a degree in music and an assignment is to transcribe drum from selected bands, im not a drummer but this has helped me so good, thanks again.
Reading it seems easy. Actually doing it correctly is hard as heck!!!!!
Especially the 16ths.
@@danieljackson4123 That's true. Doing it on bass guitar is tricky too
IKR!!!
Is it really easy to readd? I'm looking forward to that day I can read it fine lol so I could just worry about my drumming at that point haha
I am a frustrated drummer & always intimidated by the music notes but you explained this very well...not scaring beginners such I. :) Thank You So Much! :)
Hope you are still playing Michelle. How are getting on now?
Yes id like to see a video of your progress as i am a fellow drummer
I agree one hundred % I've always been afraid of music notes and with you explaining them in simple form is exactly what I've been looking for.
I've been watching hours of "music timing for drummers" and this was by far the simplest no frills hey lets learn video I've seen.
I learned sheet music early on. cuz I had violin lessons. Drum notation is easier since we deal with rhythm only.
I already knew all this but for some reason I still watched the entire thing, the way he talks is so entertaining
Thanks so much for helping all drummers!
its funny how he can teatch me more in 20 minutes that what a teatcher can do in 45-50 ????????
Liam Smart TRUTH
And for a lot of money too!
Agreed!!
Took me 2 classes(120min) to cover all the things in the video
Liam Smart EXACT
Y
I'm gonna have to watch this every day to remember it. I have the memory of a goldfish
I actually took notes like a nerd...I usually remember things better when I write them down...usually...lol
Dude.. Hey.. I am a 54 year old, really good drummer. I was in a couple of bands up until 25 years ago. We went our separate ways as we got older. I lost touch with the skins. After 10 years still a very good video!
You are the only teacher on RUclips to go into details explaining everything. Thanks a lot.
I love how you answered as many questions you think people might have, you didn't rush it and have perfect detail to not confuse anyone
I don't see who would dislike this ....as a professional drummer i love the fact that he teaches on a level where everyone can understand whether beginner professional or legend ..... thanks man...now no realize several things my teacher didn't teach me

Just experienced my "eurika moment" and suddenly everything just clicked together like that and made sense. Extremely helpful.
I was putting this off for literally years. You are a gifted teacher, and yes I know this lesson is 9 years old, but still.
I literally cannot thank you enough, i have played drums since the age of fourteen but never took the time to learn the basics and it caught up with me. (time never allowed me the opportunity). This is so good! You are great at teaching, extremely good at explaining all the details and your video layout is so nicely executed! :-D
I completely agree. A wonderful lesson! I'd appreciate you checking out my lessons. It's just a start but I'd appreciate your input.
well said!
I’m a guitar player but I’ve still learnt more than I ever knew of the drums.
This guy would totally be on my bucket list for drum teachers
That was the best 22minutes and 23 seconds of my drumming career so far, only been playing three months but I'm loving it, this is a great video, I totally absorbed everything, you have a great way of teaching, I'm sticking with you.
What took 22 minutes my music teacher failed in 16 months
Thanks. Relearning reading music after being away from it for 30 years. You're a great teacher.

You have the right idea and approach. Keep practicing!
OMG!!! Its been like 30 years since learning clarinet... and I just now finally get 16 th notes ..... thank you!!!!!!

it makes you immortal if you share your knowledge, thanks, from Philippines
Thanks for explaining this, I have drumming ears but had no idea how to read sheet music. Very Helpful!
I always wondered how to read sheet music for drums. This video has helped me quite a lot. I will have to go back over it once or twice more to fully understand just a couple of things but it has been very helpful indeed. Thankyou so much.

Rob
