Yes, everybody, in my neighborhood, was home watching" Black Belt Theatre" every Saturday when I was growing up in the 70's...Nobody was outside when "Black Belt Theatre" was on...

Love ‘8 DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER’.This sadly, was Fu Shengs final movie, and he didn’t complete it.The staff fight between Gordon Liu & Philip Kao Fei is an absolute classic. The final battle with the heroes DEFANGING the villains is also an eye opener.
Left out 3 ovelooked classics: 1) Mad Monkey Kung Fu 2) Shaolin Mantis 3) Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu This defined my childhood and taught me the value of training to become stronger and better in life. This (and Dragon Ball Z) made my youth the best...💪💪💪
Legendary Weapons is (imo) Lau Kar Leung's finest movie, followed by Dirty Ho and Eight Diagram Pole Fighter. I have to add that I feel this video sadly underrepresented other directors besides Lau and Chang Cheh. One of the best and overlooked Shaw Brothers movies is Sun Chung's masterpiece Avenging Eagle. The story and action are both among the best from not just the studio, but all of martial arts films of the old school variety. It features superb performances (both acting and fighting) from stars Ti Lung and Fu Sheng (maybe his finest dramatic role), as well as maybe the best and most evil kung fu villain portrayed by Shaw's most talented actor, Kung Feng.
I agree but Gordon liu can’t take up every spot on the Shaw top ten. Too many influential films…. No Jimmy wang yu? One armed boxer? Master of the flying guillotine ? Gtfoh!!!! No David chiang and ti lung? The duel, blood brothers, vengeance? Gtfoh!!! At least one of those movies needs to make it, otherwise you don’t tell the whole story of Shaw brothers

@@GangstaMojo the magic kick?? I can't think of the guys name right now...it's been decades - I'm sooo glad to see other people here in comments that love kung fu movies too :-D
Also recommend: The One Armed Swordsman trilogy, Come Drink With Me, The Boxer From Shantung , Death Duel, The Brave Archer trilogy, Heavenly Sword And Dragon Sabre, The Heroic One , Bastard Swordsman Also recommend another non Shaw Brothers movie: Dragon Inn
The Shaw Bros catalogue of films is so extensive, it's impossible to narrow down to just 10... No matter what you choose, you will be omitting some excellent martial arts kick-flicks.
Avenging Eagle is one of my top five martial arts films, if not my favorite (that or Legendary Weapons), as I just commented on another post. It is sorely underappreciated.
Good selection! My list (original titles) Shaolin Temple, Water Margin, Shaolin Martial Arts, Deadly Breaking Sword, Boxer Rebellion & the Duel! To many to list!
Yeah I haven’t seen all of those, have to check them out. Another thing to remember is when the film is based upon a historical event. It makes it more interesting because we get a lesson not just blood and violence.
As a martial artist I first traveled to China in the year 2000 and I grew up watching The Shaw brother movies I lived in train in China many years and in my book, the best Shaw brother movies of all time is Shaolin executioners 2 Master killer 3.5 deadly venoms 4. Eight diagram pole fighters but that's a good list you got there thank you
Invincible Shaolin is one of my fav movies of all time!! As a kid, I would rent the tape from Superstar Video (showing my age here) almost every weekend! The guy training by doing push ups with the eggs under his hands, and being forced to eat the eggs he broke every night always stick with me and made me binge all the Shaw Bros flicks as an adult until I found it (forgot the title over 10-15yrs)! As a kid, I laughed so hard when homeboi finally got sick of eating eggs, reached for dumplings, and his sensei was like "what happened?? I thought you LOVED fried eggs??"
How Five Shaolin Master didn't make a lot of people's lists is beyond me. I mean sure there are ones I liked more, but if we're talking classics & not personal favorites, 5SM should be one of the top movies.
The one with the flying bladed cage was always my favorite...Dont watch it unedited...the heads just exploded in the cage. What a treat to see such art!!
Fist of the White Lotus is a remake of Executioners from Shaolin and the commentator script has it wrong. His name IS Pei Mei as it is in Kill Bill. Gordon Lui brought his career full circle by playing him because he went from fighting Pei Mei to playing him. 👍🏿🔥🔥🔥🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💪🏾
@@somedude7184 The character in White Lotus is NOT Pai Mei. Pai Mei was killed in Executioners from Shaolin. You have to pay attention to the dialogue during the 1st fight scene with the priest. He kills one of the Executioners and maimed the other (the protagonist), so they couldn't team up and kill him like they did to Pai Mei. And then he says that Pai Mei and him were students together at the same school. And the unnamed priest was there to exact revenge on those who killed his classmate. That scene makes the story even deeper than just a retread of Executioners. It's a much better movie as well.
Shaw brothers' film portfolio is so extensive, it's impossible to narrow one's choices down to ten, and with lists like this, I'm sure everyone has their own ideas and choices. For my tastes, I would swap out DIRTY HO and HOUSE OF TRAPS and replace them with HEROES OF THE EAST (aka Challenge of the Ninja, aka Shaolin vs. Ninja) and KID WITH THE GOLDEN ARM (aka Golden Arm).
I would swap out golden arms And house of traps no problem…. But a list with no ti lung and David chiang is blasphemy The duel? Blood brothers? Vengeance? Gtfoh !!! I will say Chinese super ninjas didn’t do it for me as much as it did for some ppl. Jimmy wang yu deserves to be on this list
@@thereisnosuchthingasanativ904 - I do agree w/ you about Ti Lung. I was just looking at films from an overall story & action perspective. But no doubt, Ti Lung is a bad MF.
Bruce Lee want to star in Shaw Brothers movies but Shaw Brothers didn't accept him because he want to do own style work in the movies, later Bruce Lee got famous he made Big Boss movie, Shaw Brothers called him to join, but Bruce Lee declined Shaw Brothers company, he was joined with Golden Harvest movie company.
I was kind of wondering not long ago about why he never appeared in any Shaw Brothers movie, which should have been a logical thing. Bruce Lee apparently also got declined for the main role in the series "kung-fu", which leaves one wondering what movies of his might not have been there if he would have got the job.
@@simonperez5374 Bruce got declined for the series, Kung Fu because the studio heads wanted a white actor for the role, ( more acceptable to white audiences ) lot of controversy for this at the time. And his role as Kato in the Green Hornet, too.
It was “the Warrior” and “the Big Boss” were written by Bruce Lee. That the Shaw Brothers Studio rejected. “The Warrior” became “Kung Fu” like many things in Hollywood then and now to a degree. Typically, the original writer’s concept is taken and developed under a studio writer or writers. With claims the ideas or concepts are from author(s) book, or former “expert(s)” in a field of that movie depicted genre. This is what happened with “Kung Fu” David Carradine was not fooling anyone with his “Shaolin based martial art “skills.” And everything then and now is aimed at white audiences.
Thank you very much. You have the slightest idea on how you helped me out. You just helped me solved an lifetime puzzle for finding 8 pole diagram fighter. Out of all the movies I remembered and the names as well, I was bursting my brain trying to remember the name and I didn't, until now. Gonna find a way to watch this and God bless you. This, was in fact the movie that got away for me and you just solved this 12 year puzzle for finding this movie. Thank you. By the gods, thank you very much and I wish you great success on your channel. Hope you get to read this.
I'm gonna name some classic & not necessarily shaw brothers. Shaolin vs llama Super ninjas Invincible super chan The one armed boxer One armed swordsman Iron monkey (the original one) Strive for mastery The fatal flying guillotines 2 crippled heroes Shaolin vs ninja Just to name a few. & you was always in for a classic when you see right at the very beginning of the film a character practicing a technique & the narrator giving some backstory to said technique or a rivalry/beef. Any film where the villain is the white haired, white bearded, white eyebrowed G who's always smartly dressed & hardly gets touched throughout the film, until the end. Fights in a restaurant. Training montages Flashbacking to training montages when delivering the killer move to the bad guy at the end of the film. Yuen siu tien (sam seed) if you know you know.😁
@@terrywright8289wasn't it " I will now demonstrate the skill of Shaolin, the special technique of shadowboxing" or something like that? Either way freaking awesome movie, you can check it out on Wutang Collection here on RUclips, I also recommend The Leg Fighters and Invincible Armour
Snake in the Monkey's Shadow was one of my favourites. I just watched it here on RUclips for the 1st time since it 1st came out. Didn't know you could watch free movies on RUclips. I don't remember any of these.
Awwwww man. Bring back great memories. 5 Masters of Shaolin/Death is one of my top 5 Shaw Bros films. Glad you mentioned "The Chinatown Kid"....its a bit different from all the other SB films. Probably the saddest ending of any SB movie...I nearly cried as a kid lol
I love Hong Kong martial arts movies of this era and I have watched most of these subtitled. but one thing that alway gives me a bit of smile is the habit of just using titles over and over even if there is no connection.
The Kid With The Golden Arms had some excellent martial arts fight scenes and is 1 of my favorite movies of the genre! That should have been included here too! I wished I had it on DVD!
36th chamber return to the 36th chamber 5 deadly venoms 8th diagram pole fighter gordon liu is a boss and should be recognised more with the likes of jackie chan bruce lee and donny yen
Went from Vhs to Dvd because i loaned a box to my cousin....never seen again. Started back collection. Old school is a must for me. 86 random movies strong all martial arts
Five fingers of Death packed the theaters from 72 to its re-releases up to 75. I remembered it co featured with Enter the Dragon in 79. The lines ( in the rain) were around the corner again. One guy in the line said he was amazed how people come from far and wide over and over just to see someone get their ass kicked. Five fingers of Death was no comedy. It was bloody and Shakespeare violent. A well paced and story driven movie which made the choreography forgivable compared to Lee. Duel of the Iron Fist. Seven Blows of the Dragon. Triple Irons. Sacred Knives of Vengeance. Thunder Kick. Blood of the Dragon. The One Armed Boxer. The Chinese Professionals. The Screaming Tiger and Blood on the Sun.
Top 10 Shaw brothers movies 1. The Avenging Eagle ( Ti lung, Fu Sheng). 2. Fight for Glory ( David Chiang, Norman Chu) 3. Shaolin Mantis ( David Chiang, Lilly Lee, Lau Kar Wing) 4. Leg Fighter ( Tan Tao Liang, Hsia Kwong Li) 5. Two Champions of Shaolin ( the five venoms) 6. 8 diagram pole fighter ( Gordon Liu, Kara Hui) 7. Iron monkey strikes back ( Chen Kuan Tai, Chen Sing ) 8. Shaolin invincible sticks ( Don wong Tao, Hsia Kwong li, Kam Kong) 9. Lu Xiao Feng ( Meng Fei, Shi Fong) 10. The lost swordship ( Tien peng, Pi ying, Tong bao yun, Wang Ping) These are top 10 for me. 🙏🙏
How could you not mention Lo Leih, every bit as good a martial arts actor as Gordon Liu? Star of Five Fingers of Death and the actor who played Priest Pai Mei, the White Lotus chief in Fists of the White Lotus, was a major influence on generations of kung Fu film enthusiasts and martial artists!
Shout out to 'Opium and the Kung Fu Master', an unfairly overlooked SB classic. I'd replace 'House of Traps' with 'The One-Armed Swordsman' or 'Come Drink With Me' and the list would be about perfect.
This takes me back to when I was a youngster watching Kung Fu Theater back in the day. Word was Shaw Bros. wanted to sign Lee, but Lee thought Asian films at that time were below standard, Lee knew he could do much better. Through Run Runs disbelief and not offering what Lee wanted, and Lee's determination to do so they split ways. Thus, meeting Raymond Chow, and the rest is history.
'Master of the flying guillotine' A dope shaw brothers classic, this disguised blind budda priest was treacherous!!! But wait a minute I almost forgot ' Born invincible.'
Ahhhh ...Tie in to Star Trek Deep Space 9, Episode "Blood Oath" ... One of THE best episodes of that series, and of ALL Star Trek.... an astute observation. My Complements .
Too bad they stopped printing them. I bought them when they were coming out and I recently tried to go back to fill out the collection, but some are getting pretty expensive.
I wanna thank you so much for making/posting this video. 5 Deadly Venoms, 5 Element Ninja, 8th diagram pole fighter and Shaolin Master Killer were my all time favorite Shaw Bros classics.😁

@@GangstaMojo the magic kick?? I can't think of the guys name right now...it's been decades - I'm sooo glad to see other people here in comments that love kung fu movies too :-D
You forgot about The Kid With The Golden Arm.
My favorite!
Thats my absolute favorite!
Man they can Burn this list if Golden Arms aint on here!
@@smashface31 yep! They forgot it!
SHAW BROTHERS THE UNTOUCHABLE CINEMATIC KINGS. THE GREATEST THERE EVER WAS AND WILL EVER BE
Also recommend:
The One Armed Swordsman trilogy,
Come Drink With Me,
The Boxer From Shantung ,
Death Duel,
The Brave Archer trilogy,
Heavenly Sword And Dragon Sabre,
The Heroic One ,
Bastard Swordsman
Also recommend another non Shaw Brothers movie:
Dragon Inn
I agree with the One Armed Swordsman series with Jimmy Wang Yu. A classic indeed
@@Bbturtle35 As well as the sequel "The Return Of One Armed Swordsman "
Dragon Inn is excellent.
The New One Armed Swordsman with David Chiang made cry as a kid when Ti Lung got cut in half by Chen Sing😁, thus my favorite of all time SB movies😂
Wang Yu was great but i prefered David Chiang, Ti Lung n most all the duels between Chen Sing n David Kurata (china vs japan)😁
No Golden Arms??? This whole list is disqualified with that omission alone but no Iron Flag Brothers, no 10 Tigers?? Boooo! Boo I say.
The Shaw Bros catalogue of films is so extensive, it's impossible to narrow down to just 10... No matter what you choose, you will be omitting some excellent martial arts kick-flicks.
Great list with Shaw Brothers too many good movies, legendary weapons of china, my young auntie, etc... Great studio
Also "Sword Stained with Royal Blood" & Masked Avengers"
I was thinking the same thing! Next to the Deadly Venoms The Kid with the Golden Arms are the tops!
I Agree !!!!
You are talking to nobody but Generation X!
No other generation will truly understand the nostalgia of these movies!
Masked Avengers (1981) is also a classic
my number ONE, man... 😁😁
Shaw brothers made some of the best if not the best and baddest Kung Fu movies EVER!!
The drive in Movie in Saturdays was a highlight of the day as a kid. Classics.
Me 2
Avenging Eagle, the Sentimental Swordsman and Executioners from Shaolin were some great ones also.
36 Chambers is definitely one my favorites.
Shaw Brothers movies are amazing... my favorite is Sword Stained with Royal Blood
As a martial artist I first traveled to China in the year 2000 and I grew up watching The Shaw brother movies I lived in train in China many years and in my book, the best Shaw brother movies of all time is Shaolin executioners 2 Master killer 3.5 deadly venoms 4. Eight diagram pole fighters but that's a good list you got there thank you
They forgot the movie The Heroes of the East.
My number one favorite!
Yes! Great Choice! I love that movie! I've watched it over and over again on DVR! Lol! I love the ending! 👍
Yea I agree that is one of their greatest movies
Yeah that is my favourite SB movie!
Great movie, I came to the comments section looking for this comment lol
this was my childhood wearing cheap chinese slippers and sipping tea from a saucer lmao
Sir Run Run Shaw. Knight of the British Empire. Movie-making extraordinaire. Lived till 106 years old!
What a boss. We will never see his like again.
Legendary Weapons of China, Heroes of the East and My Young Auntie are great too. Nice list. 👍👍
A lot of classic films/actors of Shaw Brothers Studios in this video--but, Fu Sheng is my favorite actor out of all of them!!!!!💥💥💥
Fu Sheng RIP
thanks for bringing back some great memories!
How Five Shaolin Master didn't make a lot of people's lists is beyond me.
I mean sure there are ones I liked more, but if we're talking classics & not personal favorites, 5SM should be one of the top movies.
I met Angela Mao Ying yesterday. She was very gracious. Very short lady.
The one with the flying bladed cage was always my favorite...Dont watch it unedited...the heads just exploded in the cage. What a treat to see such art!!
White Lotus is obviously Tarantino's inspiration for Pei Mei in Kill Bill.
Fist of the White Lotus is a remake of Executioners from Shaolin and the commentator script has it wrong. His name IS Pei Mei as it is in Kill Bill. Gordon Lui brought his career full circle by playing him because he went from fighting Pei Mei to playing him. 👍🏿🔥🔥🔥🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💪🏾
and Lady Snowblood for whole Kill Bill :-)
@@somedude7184 yes and the original dude to play Pai Mei was Lo Lieh from the Five Fingers of Death movie
@William Leonard Go Chiefs!
I second that cote for kid with the golden arm I remember it well :-D
Heroes was all dat
Heroes of the East is one of my favorites as well.
I would swap out golden arms
And house of traps no problem….
But a list with no ti lung and David chiang is blasphemy
The duel? Blood brothers? Vengeance? Gtfoh !!!
I will say Chinese super ninjas didn’t do it for me as much as it did for some ppl. Jimmy wang yu deserves to be on this list
@@thereisnosuchthingasanativ904 - I do agree w/ you about Ti Lung. I was just looking at films from an overall story & action perspective. But no doubt, Ti Lung is a bad MF.
so many classics
nothing like a Shaw bros. production guarantees visual stimulation
Sammo Hung went to Golden Harvest too. If only.
Art in motion is all I can say. Great cinematography and choreography. Very Fun to watch, Good job !!!
Better than Anime.
This video opened my eyes to a bunch of new shaw bros movies that i never knew about
I'm gonna name some classic & not necessarily shaw brothers.
Shaolin vs llama
Super ninjas
Invincible super chan
The one armed boxer
One armed swordsman
Iron monkey (the original one)
Strive for mastery
The fatal flying guillotines
2 crippled heroes
Shaolin vs ninja
Just to name a few.
Training montages
Flashbacking to training montages when delivering the killer move to the bad guy at the end of the film.
Yuen siu tien (sam seed) if you know you know.😁
Some of these movies are available on youtube, a channel called Wu Tang Collection, which actually owns the rights to many classic Kung Fu films.
Shaolin vs lama( "Let's try my special technique is SHADOWBOXING"!!!)😉
@@terrywright8289wasn't it " I will now demonstrate the skill of Shaolin, the special technique of shadowboxing" or something like that? Either way freaking awesome movie, you can check it out on Wutang Collection here on RUclips, I also recommend The Leg Fighters and Invincible Armour
@@cyborgchicken3502 yeah you got it.lol Invincible Armor I love it😉
"Allow me to demonstrate the special technique of shadowboxing"
Some of my favorite movies
Snake in the Monkey's Shadow was one of my favourites.
I just watched it here on RUclips for the 1st time since it 1st came out.
Didn't know you could watch free movies on RUclips.
I don't remember any of these.
Good but what of 'The Prodigcal son' and then
Invincible armour', last A long came a tiger.'
My favorites.
Heroes 2
Five Shaolin Masters
Boxer from Shantung
Delightful Forest
Chinatown Kid
The fight in the alley at the end of the Martial Club is an 11 for badassery...
I LOVE SHAW BROTHERS KUNG FU MOVIES
5 deadly venoms and 36 chambers are kung fu classics. All of shaw brothers kung fu movies are pure classics
Thanks to Shaw brothers I learned Kung FU!
I had these on vhs and still have 3 on dvd . Classics
I love the 1,2.1,2 choreography. 36 chambers and flying gulioten are tied for best to me
The Kid With The Golden Arms had some excellent martial arts fight scenes and is 1 of my favorite movies of the genre!
Top 10 Shaw brothers movies
1. The Avenging Eagle ( Ti lung, Fu Sheng).
2. Fight for Glory ( David Chiang, Norman Chu)
3. Shaolin Mantis ( David Chiang, Lilly Lee, Lau Kar Wing)
4. Leg Fighter ( Tan Tao Liang, Hsia Kwong Li)
5. Two Champions of Shaolin ( the five venoms)
6. 8 diagram pole fighter ( Gordon Liu, Kara Hui)
7. Iron monkey strikes back ( Chen Kuan Tai, Chen Sing )
8. Shaolin invincible sticks ( Don wong Tao, Hsia Kwong li, Kam Kong)
9. Lu Xiao Feng ( Meng Fei, Shi Fong)
10. The lost swordship ( Tien peng, Pi ying, Tong bao yun, Wang Ping)
These are top 10 for me. 🙏🙏
I like all of the karate movie's. I enjoy them all
One of my favorites is Eagles Claw
Fist of the White Lotus is top shelf when it comes to old school Martial Arts movies.
One Armed Swordsman and Shaolin Mantis and Come Drink With Me were dope as well
How could you not mention Lo Leih, every bit as good a martial arts actor as Gordon Liu? Star of Five Fingers of Death and the actor who played Priest Pai Mei, the White Lotus chief in Fists of the White Lotus, was a major influence on generations of kung Fu film enthusiasts and martial artists!
RIP to Liu Kar Leung the Legendary choreographer.
Shout out to 'Opium and the Kung Fu Master', an unfairly overlooked SB classic.
I'd replace 'House of Traps' with 'The One-Armed Swordsman' or 'Come Drink With Me' and the list would be about perfect.
I agree there’s twenty movies that go before house of traps. That was a dud compared to some of David chiang or Jimmy wang yu movies smh
@@thereisnosuchthingasanativ904 Yeah, I mean HOT is okay, but it's no Legendary Weapons of China, am I right?
Except for 5 Fingers of Death these are 9 of my top 10! Excellent list!
This List & Bruce Lee is really why is the reason why I did, love, and will always do martial arts.
#1 Duel of the Iron Fist.. ..Its got the Rover and more deaths than any other Shaw Bros film
'Master of the flying guillotine'
A dope shaw brothers classic, this disguised blind budda priest was treacherous!!! But wait a minute I almost forgot ' Born invincible.'
Honestly I preferred the redone version Iron Flag. Much better action sequences IMO.
Shaw brothers inesquecível🧡🇧🇷
Sentimental Swordsman will always be my favourite shaw movie and Ti Lung my favourite actor
Ahhhh ...Tie in to Star Trek Deep Space 9, Episode "Blood Oath" ... One of THE best episodes of that series, and of ALL Star Trek.... an astute observation. My Complements .
I remember Five Fingers of Death and The Chinese Professionals kicking off the martial arts movie craze here in Chicago.
Classic shaw Brothers make legendary kung fu epic movies of all time
Way much better than the so called Hollywood imitation and knockoffs
Fantastic !
Five elemental ninjas. My absolute favourite Kung fu flick of all time.
Super ninja 🥷 those tree 🌳 guys!
The fanservice from Quentin Tarantino towards the Lotus movie was incredible
Shaw brothers we need a 4k set
Dragon Dynasty has re-released a few of these with improved dubbing and also offers subtitles with the original mandarin dialogue.
Too bad they stopped printing them. I bought them when they were coming out and I recently tried to go back to fill out the collection, but some are getting pretty expensive.
7 grandmasters was one of the best PLOT: A young guy wants to seek out and revenge his fathers death GOES TO THE BEST TEACHER HE CAN FIND good movie 🤙
I wanna thank you so much for making/posting this video. 5 Deadly Venoms, 5 Element Ninja, 8th diagram pole fighter and Shaolin Master Killer were my all time favorite Shaw Bros classics.😁
You're so right about White Lotus. I saw that when I was a teen and I still remember the fight sequences at 57.
Man, now i got to go blow the dust off my DVD player and have a Kung Fu Fest Binge this weekend!
I love these movies, and they're on Amazon Prime right now.
