Brian one thing you're forgetting is losing top talent because of free agency is something the Astros fan base is used to. At least this time they got a return before he walked. I still think they should've went for it this season with Tucker and figured out the rest later but the trade definitely does help the future. Oh and another reason the fan base isn't that pissed is because it's the off-season and we're not seeing it on the field yet
I love Tucker, but teams not named the Dodgers that sign mega-deals don't stay competitive. That's it. The Astros have been competitive because they build talent, not buy it.
They built talent by trading away all of their veterans, had 3 or 4 - 100 loss seasons, picked first in the draft all of those seasons and built prospects that were can’t miss minor leaguers. I was here during those 100 loss seasons.
I think Arenado can be a good bat in Houston. Look at the line up. We got pretty much no offense from LF, CF, RF when Tucker was injured, 1B. Arenado can hit better than half of the Astros bats in 2024. Arenado may not be a super star anymore, but if he comes cheap...he will be an addition.
As a lifelong Astros fan, I'll explain why most fans are happy about this trade. 1. Jim Crane have been very vocal about not passing out long-term contracts (over 6 years of guaranteed money) so we were not going to extend him no matter how many wanted ownership to. We saw way to many of our best players over that last few years walk for free and this was a change from that. 2. Tucker is a great player but last year he was injured for big chunk last year and we were still able to compete. I know that most sleep on our farm system but we have a bunch of outfield bats in AAA that are waiting for a chance as well as our top OF prospect (Jacob Melton). Pedro Leon is someone the Astros signed a few years ago out of Cuba that is going to be looked at during spring training. Everyone is focused on the Isaac Paredes part of this trade but the real jewel is Cam Smith. He is a Top 100 prospect that can hold down 3rd base for a long time in the future. Paredes is the short-term and Smith is the long-term answer at 3rd base. Wesneski is just cream on the top, a local product that will help with fan engagement just like Arrighetti. 3. There is only 1 player that the Astros view as "untouchable" and that is Jose Altuve. As he gets older, we have to also get younger around him so that we can still compete each year. Astros fans are not like Yankees or Dodgers fans, we do not expect success by buying or overpaying for talent, we cultivate and grow talent and that is why we are successful year after year. We already have seen what aging players on long-term contracts look like (i.e. Albert Pujols, Angels contract) and that is not something that we want. Good teams trade to get better, Great teams trade to get better with a plan
As a fellow life long Astros fan I agree. I think Yordan is nearing the untouchable point, and will become the untouchable one once Altuve retires. IMO. The Tucker loss stings, but we were gonna lose him anyways, so getting something back is a good eal. Also, great job bringing up Leon! The 'Stros have been good at getting international talents that other teams have slept on. I expect that to continue.
They are getting over $70 million in bad contracts off the books after this season. The smart play is to stay under the salary tax cap, avoid the repeater penalty, and have lots of money to spend in 2026 when Tucker, and Vlad Jr. are on the market. Sometimes you have to take a step back before you can move forward.
I think it's funny how many people seem to have a crystal ball telling them what a player will do in 2025. Paredes is 25 years old. He's played 3 full major league seasons. He hit 20hr with 70rbi his rookie year in Tampa. That's not a hitters park at all. He hit 31hr with 98 RBI his second year. Last season he was part of a trade to the Cubs. He hit 19hr with 71rbi. I think a full season at Minute Made park and he'll hit 30hr with 100 rbi. Just like Tucker. If the Astros get Arenado cheap, he's been slumping a little for the last couple years, but I think he would be a big improvement in the line up over Meyers, McCormick, Dubon, Singleton, and any player we put in when Tucker was injured. Arenado may not be the superstar he used to be, but he's an improvement in the lineup. There's potential for a 270, 20hr season. The Astros still need an impact bat in the OF to be contenders again. I think Paredes replaces Tucker's bat, Arenado replaces Bregmans bat, and then one addition would be an improvement for the Astros offense.
If they keep Bregman and let Tucker go then I just don't see how they are serious about anything. Bregman has been declining and Tucker is still in the heart of his prime...I just wish they held out on the Tucker trade longer to see a real bid war going on. Cam Smith is the #7 ranked prospect in the Cubs organization.
@DMTree4me He knows Crane doesn't offer long term contracts and was seeking a 10 year extention. Just like Bregman sold his house in Houston in the summer of 2024.
Not Nolan Arenado, he has Abreu extra base hits numbers. His .OPS has declined since leaving the Rockies. Plus we would eat almost half his salary on another 34 year old player. Nope nope lol
You have to get to the playoffs first. Tucker hit 30HR, close to 30SB, and 100rbi three of the last four years. That's a big part of getting to the playoffs.
I don’t care who you are Tucker Bregman are not worth that look at springer and Correa duds after they left chase money leave Houston history speaks for itself
Astros are keeping Altuve and thought Bregman too. But when Soto got that big contract Bregman who is just as good and probably thinks he should get just as much. He knows Astros won't go that high. The longer he holds out the better the chance of staying with the Astros. Teams are signing other players while Bregman holds out.
@ so he would reconsider the choices he made? Sure hope they’re not gonna get another older player on the decline. He had less extra base hits last year than Jose Abreu in 2023.
He was hurt this season. Every other season, he has contributed. Compare him to Aaron Judge in 2022 post-season ... Judge: 5 Runs 5 Hits 2 HR 3 RBIs 2 Walks .490 OPS Tucker 4 Runs 10 Hits 3 HRs 6 RBIs 7 walks .706 OPS
@@jrgvsqz The last 3 post seasons Tucker at the plate 10-49, 6-40 and 0-7. And in 2022 your comparison year he had like 2 games where he got most of his hits.

Be frugal when it truly benefits the team. Get out of your damn comfort zone and step up to the plate and spend on those rare moments like a Tucker coming up. Arenado is not an impact bat
Forget him , try for Walker, and a decent outfielder. Their outfield is pitiful.
Stock up on pitching and reload the offense at the deadline. That's the plan.

@TexanUSMC8089
He's not cheap. He's owed $74million over 3 years with Colorado paying $10million of that. Basically, $21.3million a year.
@@JustLikeHeaven77 exactly. And he had fewer extra base hits than Jose Abreu in 2023. That’s very anemic at best.

well they did overpay Abreu and Montero and that handcuffed us a bit in salary. Should have never let Click go.

He will be high dollar if he has a good year.

He'll no. Only a dumb team will pay him 400 to 500 million dollar contract. That will just mess everything up for the Astros.
it was better to trade him than letting him walk next year

He doesnt produce in the playoffs. And houston was still able to win games and win the division with him being hurt most of the year
yes he was god awful in the postseason. I hated seeing his little trots off infield outs.
So they're supposed to let him walk for nothing next season? Just like Othani walked away for nothing?
Just like Correa, Springer, Cole etc.. The new GM just thinks differently
Astros can not afford him. They might as well get something rather than nothing for him.
Last year the made the playoffs without Kyle Tucker 😂 off the backs off pitching and Alvarez
True but the pitching was really good with Kikuchi who left this offseason.
@ our pitching staff is also young and a lot of pitchers are coming off the IL
And Arenado? Please no. Reminds all too much of Jose Abreu with where he's at in his career.
So funny he said Bregman will prob never be as good as the 2017 season. LOL yeah we all know why!
Bad news losing Tucker!
