I agree with you on brussel sprouts, less the bacon grease. Instead I use a vinegar or maybe soy sauce! Season with some onion and garlic powder and YUM!!

Place them in a single layer and vacuum seal them. Fried green tomatoes are awesome for Christmas dinner, they are a little softer, but still awesome in the dead of winter.

I wouldn't say that I'm well versed on cabbage. However I have grown at least 6 varieties. My favorite for flavor, texture, and quick to harvest is STONEHEAD CABBAGE from seeds-n-such. It's so good I eat it raw.

I grew spinach and red mustard all last Winter in zone 6. They both self seeded in August. Also the flowers sweet peas and bachelor's buttons do that for me too. We are usually very dry in the Winter, so that might make a difference.
You must be north of me. My first frost date is October 10. I just planted a " hail Mary" sweet corn crop. Good information keep it coming. We can all learn from other people. I am ready for turnips, kale, cabbage...yada, yada!!! You have the gift of teaching. Use it brother.

How about onions? I'm just now harvesting from smaller left overs of last year's planting. I love the green scallions and chives during winter cooking. I do have hoops over that bed for cover when super freezes come or temps stay below 32 for extended periods.
Any onions planted this time of year would only really be good for green onions. I doubt they would bulb up. Onions are normally planted about 6 weeks before your last frost in the spring if you want full sized onions. But if you are only interested in the green onions then you could try some bunching onions this time of year.
I wish I had known that before I bought some onion sets today. I have the white and red kind. How long can I keep these before they go bad? Will they last until spring? I'm in 8a Va.
@@StoneyAcresGardening that's true but they can be started now, planted and winter over till next year. Green onions all winter and spring and pull in summer for large onions all other needs. I live in southern Missouri and this is how I do it. Only use covers on really bad winter weather.
@@littlebrownP - normally you plant sets in fall to overwinter or plant in early early spring. If you have them now, I’d plant them for green onions now and then see if they overwinter. It’s a good experiment. Doesn’t hurt to try. Plus since you’re zone 8, you can easily overwinter because how mild your winters are.

Carrots are best started directly in the garden. You should target starting them roughly 6 to 8 weeks before your first frost date in the fall. So you will still have a month or more before you put them in.
Will the brassica withstand all winter out in the frost and freeze? Should I plant them in the unheated greenhouse? Or in a cold frame? Should I pull them out before it freezes and store them? Thank you for the video
The goal is to get them harvested before the cold weather settles in. That's why we are starting them early. I have had broccoli survive under row cover over winter in Zone 6b, but the spring harvest was small and it bolted really early.
I noticed that you didn't mention beets. Is this because of difficulty in starting them indoors and transplanting outside? I am still fairly new at this, but I have had decent success with beets and have killed fewer of them than other plants ;)
Yes, I'm not a big fan of transplanting root crops. I know it is possible, but they do so well directly planted that I don't waste my precious indoor space with them. Also maturity dates are much shorter with beets so there is less to worry about. You can just direct seed them into the garden 6 -8 weeks before you first frost for a nice fall crop!

Could you give me some ideas on the best thing to do for broccoli rabe? I just can't seem to get it right as far as temperature is concerned. I did my seeds in Spring and then we had two hot days in a row here in Connecticut and it bolted. It's fine with me because there's a lot of seed pods now so I'm letting them continue to grow. But what months if I'm in zone 7 and I believe our first frost date is November 1st this year, when do you suggest I start my new seeds? There isn't anything on the internet about broccoli rabe and it's one of our favorites so I want to grow lots of it but every year I go through the same problems
You would probably put broccoli rabe in the same time as broccoli. I read a comment that a fellow TN here (zone 7) starts the seeds in like Jan/early Feb to put their brassicas out in March and harvests in May. For the fall, they put the seedling out by end of Aug/early Sep to harvest in late Oct/early Nov. They didn’t say when their first frost date was but I thought their comment about early spring was really interesting since what they said makes sense but isn’t noted on any planting calendars anywhere. Hope that helps. The same thing happened to me where I started my seeds in early Mar to put out in April and my brassicas bolted right away. It got hot so fast. It was already getting too hot by the mid/end of April. So now I’ll shift everything a month for the brassicas on my calendar to see if that helps. I think I got to a late start this year anyway so that might be why it didn’t work. Good luck!

This video was meant specifically for indoor seeds. I have a video coming out today with more about planting outdoors in July. Most fall planting doesn't start until August outdoors.
No, winter squash are warm season crops that need to be planted as soon as your last spring frost is done in zones 4-7. You need all that time to get them to maturity, time is getting really short for winter squash in the colder zones.
Boy, I'm sorry that's not something I have any experience in. As long as they are not poisonous I'm happy having snakes in my garden as they help keep pests down. But I will be honest, I haven't seen a snake in my garden for years. We just don't have many snakes in our area. Sorry I can't really help. Anyone else have some suggestions for Chinh V?

Besides, cats let loose outside have been tracked to kill up to 20 song birds, mice, rabbits, frogs, a day or night causing ecological problems for the area. They have been breed for domestic playfulness and softer less protective fur to be in house pets and not wild animals with the instincts for long term survival which is why many areas now require cats to be let out only on a halter leash with a person on the other end. I live in a suburbs of a big city but near a woodland. I have to hear the shrieks of cats being killed by racoons and coyotes too often and have a neighbor who has seen it. It is horrible and makes me angry for pet owner’s irresponsibility. I have also been told by several different friends that they each had a neighbor in their area that would poison or set traps not only for squirrels but for cats that would dig in their gardens. Cats will not stay in their own yard so please do not get one and let it loose outside.
Simple florescent or LED shop lights are all your really need. You don't need to get too fancy with the expensive grow lights when you are just raising seedlings.
Ellen, last yr I started experimenting with growing seeds in different environs. Indoor grow lights are great but if u have a sunny south facing windowsill that might suffice for some of them...albeit with this method you'll need to rotate the seedlings frequently so they grow uniformly straight/tall. (The germinated sprouts will angle their growth in direction of light source)....
I don’t think 9b gets frost. I lived in LA and it never drops below 36 even in the winters. I was able to “overwinter” parsley and cilantro that I bought in Sep which flourished like crazy starting early spring. I didn’t have a south facing area that got enough sun because of a building in the way of my patio. I could have had the growth even in the winter in LA if I had that sun throughout the day. The issue that you likely face is figuring out when it stops getting so hot. For us it was always around October. It would always get cold around Halloween. You probably want to aim for planting the brassicas out after it’s no longer too hot. I recommend following Epic Gardening who is in San Diego and David the Good who is in Florida. You could probably follow them to see when they seed/transplant their brassicas. They probably have some videos in prior years about it too. Good luck! Edit: You can also follow San Diego Seed Company who specializes in growing in zones 9-10. They will likely go through when to plant brassicas as well. They also have seeds that do well in those zones.

LOL! Sounds delicious, but I will still have to take your word for it. We don't eat bacon at all so I never have bacon grease around.
I rarely eat bacon but I make an exception when it comes to shredded fried cabbage and onions cooked in a skillet with alittle bacon grease lol

No they won't last till next year. They will dry up long before then. If you have room just put them in and you can enjoy the green onions.

I have brassicas fruiting into November, i just do row covers after the snow flies. Zone 6 here.

for a fall crop you will want to direct seed both of those in the garden about 8 week before your first frost.
What if you don't have AC, and it's not really any cooler indoors than outdoors?
You will still have them out of the direct sun when they are indoors so that will help.

yay or nay on lettuce?
I am in Utah Zone 6b. It's too early for lettuce. You plant that about 6 weeks before your last frost. (indoors or out)
I guess this will not work for me.. 3 AC and my house still 80 when outside its 86 :(
Well that isn't ideal, but it will still work and the plants would be much better off than if they were out in the scorching sun.

It's too early for spinach. Spinach is either directly planted by seed in the garden or started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your first frost.

Yes, you need to look it if for your zone. I live in 6b so I don't have a lot of experience in your zone cany anyone else help Adela out?

I don’t think 9b gets frost. I lived in LA and it never drops below 36 even in the winters. I was able to “overwinter” parsley and cilantro that I bought in Sep which flourished like crazy starting early spring. I didn’t have a south facing area that got enough sun because of a building in the way of my patio. I could have had the growth even in the winter in LA if I had that sun throughout the day.
The issue that you likely face is figuring out when it stops getting so hot. For us it was always around October. It would always get cold around Halloween. You probably want to aim for planting the brassicas out after it’s no longer too hot.
I recommend following Epic Gardening who is in San Diego and David the Good who is in Florida. You could probably follow them to see when they seed/transplant their brassicas. They probably have some videos in prior years about it too.

Edit: You can also follow San Diego Seed Company who specializes in growing in zones 9-10. They will likely go through when to plant brassicas as well. They also have seeds that do well in those zones.
