Bought a Hzrdous Black Xshiff 65 gram shaft. Added 20 yards to my drives with the Kirkland head. Got it used with a Mizuno tip and a Lamkin grip for 70 bucks. The ball just explodes off the head now. Love it.
I know it's trendy to love everything Costco, but you mentioned getting fitted etc. Why does nobody talk about Benross anymore? It's readily available in UK. You can try before you buy. You can even get fitted to a limited extent. And it's cheaper than Kirkland but with a better heritage. 🤔
It would be interesting to see just how much Costco would charge for a driver with a better shaft. People could use an old driver with a Mizuno adapter on..
Hi James, when you hold up the driver just before setup, it looks as though you are shutting the clubface at slightly at address. Is this the case? If so, what is the benefit of doing this? Thanks
I wonder what I'd pick if I had to choose between a Costco driver with say a Tour AD or Fujikura Velocore shaft or a top end $600 driver with the Evenflow Riptide shaft that comes stock with the Costco driver. I know it should come down to which one I hit better but I'm talking about my ego.
Hmm. I have a the driver and use it as a backup. I just dropped a Tensei White 65g in my Stealth 2 Plus and improved by almost 10 yards on my drives. I have a blue version and might get it retipped and drop it in my Costco.
The Evenflow Riptide (assuming it's the real shaft, not a "made for" shaft) is a great shaft for slower swingers, and those with a smooth tempo. That doesn't mean it fits everyone, and your testing proves that certain shafts fit certain swings better than others. What you experienced has nothing to do with the quality of the shaft, but the fact you used a shaft that fits you better.
The project x riptide black is great in my 3wood , but driver not so.. blue was better in pxg0211. My new 0311 ventus red tr is best , the black was to soft , tensi blue suited me better in the cold , but ventus when swinging well. So shaft is prob 70% of overall feel
I just learned the lesson of the shaft. I bought a budget shaft and was horrible. Upgraded to Hzdus Cyphr and dispersion halved. I am now a true believer
Everyone keeps asking what is the total price of the driver with the new shaft. Listen, you can get a Miz ST with a much better shaft used for $150. Kirkland Driver for $199. Then you swap shafts, sell the Mizuno back for $100. It cost you $50. No adapters needed. Not expensive.
Now that the way to think through the whole process. That is exactly what I was thinking. Buy a cheap used Mizuno drive and switch shafts , Bingo you have a winner !
I just spent a shit load of money on set of Ping G425's Got the driver, 3hybrid and the iron set , with 3 wedges. Also grabbed the Calloway Odyssey 7 putter. Cant wait to go hit some golf balls.
Great idea ...people will do this and hope it works ..I've always thought most new drivers now perform similar anyway it's what suits you at the end of the day ...let bobby hit it
You buy the kirkland. You buy a used mizuno st with a better shaft. You swap, you sell the Mizuno with the other shaft. It's cheap overall when you play it right.
James is a pro, with a much higher swing speed than Joe Average shopping at Costco and matching a stiffer/lower spin shaft produced results. But for slower swing speeds resulting in 220 yard drives the Project X Evenflow Riptide lineup might actually be the better option.
There's likely nothing wrong with the stock shaft. It's produced by True Temper and part of the Project X graphite series, though it's probably a "made for" version with cheaper materials than the top tier models. Based on the numbers, it looks like it was simply a bad fit for you as you benefited from the lower spin and launch provided by the UST shaft.
It depends on what fits you best and willing to buy new or used for a shaft. A similar uncut UST Lin-q shaft on 2nd swing is $195, so it'd be around $230 to $240 after installing shaft adapter and grip. The $430-440 total cost would still be cheaper than the new Callaway or Taylormade with the same upgrade shaft that is $750.
When you do a driver review, how about including a table of all releases you’ve tested this year with some more stats (swing speed, ball speed, dispersion, etc) to give a good feel for which driver seems to be ‘best’??
I genuinely don't think anyone would buy a costco driver then going to buy a premium shaft to put in it. Maybe if they could buy a cheap used shaft from mizuno that had the same sleeve but even then i dont think they would.
Bottom line - exposing the fact that the margins between premium and value options simply aren’t as wide as they used to be and likely never will be again. Trickle down is good for golf.
@@garydavis8213 Ok thanks I had no idea. I just picked up a set of Ping G425's, its the last set I will ever own....I am an old fart, with around 10yrs left.
I don't think it's fair to make the blanket statement that the stock shaft is bad and the new shaft is better. More context is needed for it not to be misleading. The new shaft is clearly better for you but it is highly likely there are golfers out there who would hit it better with the stock shaft. It all comes down to fitting the individual golfer's swing which is why fitting would help but unfortunately is not available for Costco clubs as you said.
And why would anyone but a scratch golfer or better want anything different than this. The pros aren't going to like it or all the advertisers and marketers, but sure is great for the consumer. Keep sticking it to the overpriced, over marketed companies ripping the cosumers off. Good on you Costco.
Truegolffit free online questionnaire suggested this driver as best fit, and I have a Mizuno St-x driver laying around. It's should be a great experiment, Dr. Frankenstein
I hit this with same shaft against a 910d2 and 913d3 and it outperformed both. Yes, they are older drivers, but used they can be $140. Why not get a $199 brand new one.
@jamesrobinsongolf James you really need to test Lombardi golf putter pc308 it’s the best putter ever you need to be first in uk to test these tell Paul from Lombardi Tommy sent you mate

🤔
Why not explore all avenues especially if you live in the UK? I live in the US and I was interested to try Ben Ross equipment.
Seems worth buying a second hand shaft on the cheap that you like and getting a mizuno adapter on it.
IMHO, Gabe has been on fire with his channel for the past few months. It's so cool your both are aiding in each other's channel.
It would be interesting to see just how much Costco would charge for a driver with a better shaft. People could use an old driver with a Mizuno adapter on..
Granted the included shaft isn't premium and neither is the price but isn't that the whole point of Costco Kirkland products?
Love your videos James!
Good to see how it performs with a better shaft in
James-you mentioned the adapter being hard to get ahold of, I see I can order one online for $15. Is it the ST line adapter?
That's an eye opener seeing the difference because of the shaft. The mainstream brands better watch out.
As the trees begin to bud, it appears that your game is going to come around very soon,

How expensive is the replacement shaft?

Well done James and Rob you never ever know until you try things, Shaftoid, defiantly made your point, upgraded shafts next to the Loo paper🤣

Hey James, we see how the club improved at your golf swings but how does it work for mere mortals with golf swings of 80 and 90 mph?
I think it is a popular knowledge that premium shaft makes a hugh difference on the club’s performance, especially on woods.
What new shift did you use?
I just learned the lesson of the shaft. I bought a budget shaft and was horrible. Upgraded to Hzdus Cyphr and dispersion halved. I am now a true believer

“Picked up next to the ketchup.” Is a premium comment, hahahah 😂👏
So what would be the combined price of the Kirkland head, the Mizuno adapter and the upgraded shaft?
I don't think you need an adapter as well.
You buy the kirkland. You buy a used mizuno st with a better shaft. You swap, you sell the Mizuno with the other shaft. It's cheap overall when you play it right.

James, you should join Costco consulting team and have them add premium upgrade shaft options!
Why don't golf club manufacturers use one standard adjustment head? That way, we could use any shaft on any club?
Money
Makes the most since to buy a used mizuno driver and then sell the head, keep the shaft
Please test the Costco/upgraded shaft against other drivers

Are you gaming the Mizuno now James?
New drinking game: drink a pint everytime James asked Bobby, if he got the zoom on that... 🙃
As it's in a Mizuno shaft, how about testing it against the newest equivalent Mizuno head?!?
I'd do it just for that last reason, James 😁
Guess its something to look at
Shout out Bobby!
I think Cosco is changing the golf pricing landscape
Well would cost of shaft will make Costco driver no longer good value compare to others?
Great point!
Yes if you change shafts in others from the stock one.
All we want to know is the cost of the shaft coz Mizuno drivers are not cheap 😂
It depends on what fits you best and willing to buy new or used for a shaft. why didnt costco put a shaft in most likely to not get sued lol
It's better than the mini driver!
You always say one thing smart and then follow it up with three dumb things 🤣
Nobody’s perfect mate. And remember, ice is lovely at room temp, grass grows quicker than hair and water is bad for you so drink beer instead

If you can use the Mizuno adapter, why not just use the Mizuno head?
Price.

Calm down pal 👍🏼
If you pay $199 and get a Better Shaft for $100 that is still better than buying a $600 New Driver.
James gained 8 yards with his swing speed. What would we gain 3-4 yards?

Wat's the point of reviewing a product that isn't for sale in the UK?
No left handed
Much more moneyfor 8 yards ,I don't think so

it doesn't look anything like a tsr2.
