Yes I remember her speaking this years ago. I also believe that since Hollywood is dominated by whites are imitated by blacks not just men but women too because we are just as talented as them. They don't like us but they sure want to go out on the beach or the tone places to get their skin tone darker and that's 💯🤷🏽
Oh, I'm not sure if Ms Avery realizes that we looked for her after the Oscars too! She wasn't getting the roles and we missed out on her contribution! She was so wonderful in The Color Purple and we didn't see her again. not in the significant way that her talent deserved. She is a national treasure and that's not based on this one role, but her talent. I was only able to sample her talent here and there, but I missed her. Her contribution was missed as an example for my daughter, my granddaughter and my great-granddaughter!!! My granddaughter majored in drama and planned to act until she changed the direction of her career because she didn't want to be a "sidekick" actor after training so long. She pivoted to behind the camera. (and right now to new "mom") Oh, and I have to comment on her outfit, her hair, her jewelry , her mudcloth oh it just made my heart sing!!!!
Like most of the main cast, she was outstanding in original Color Purple movie. I've seen her in a couple of movies and she never disappoints. It's sad that despite Her obvious talent she never clinched a major role.
Thank you so much for this and for using Ms. Avery. I feel like with all that happened lately, people needed to hear from the original. I hope the film does better. I think "bad" press may be hurting it.
This was an eye-opener to learn that even with an Ocaser nomination she hadn't worked for two years when the Color Purple wrapped. We need to keep advocating for our Black Actors to be treated equally. It's 2024 and this racism needs to stop.
It’s not racism. Its popularity. The Color Purple isn’t a film that a large amount of non-black audiences are going to see/watch. So these actors are only known to a small category of people percentage wise who go to the movies.
@Portia....I had to look twice and look hard when I first clicked on your video here because you look to much like Susan Taylor of Essence Magazine it's remarkable the resemblence....even your demeanor and voice. You are absolutely gorgeous sis! And great interview of the Ms. Avery as well. 👍🥰
The grey hair on this beautiful woman got my attention. Dont think I know her. But she is beautiful. The host can get it too. Fine age wine looking women.
@@Marie24-q2t I see where they mentioned that. But I would have to re-watch to jog my mind. Maybe if that old Hollywood system didn't shut her out, this classy fine azz woman would be remembered like Angela Bassette.
Suppression, suppression, just keep it in, go along with the flow, no matter how lack of recognition it should have rolled. This is why , today, this still an troublesome issue. It was always kept, within bottled up.. Validation didn't matter.SUPRESSED!
We are all so privileged and glad to see an elder in the world of acting, passionately speak of her experience of limited work in Hollywood. Sadly, what she may or may not know, is that her fellow actors have all done despicable things to gain success in Hollywood. That cat has been let out of the bag. Many have sold their souls for Hollywood roles. Cutthroats included. Margaret Avery escaped because of her integrity and respect for herself. I'm sure she was offered to play roles of degradation for demotion...as whores etc.) But she turned them down as few honorable others did. God bless her for that.
This is why the great Marla Gibbs held on to her job at United Airlines during the early half of her acting career. Marla saw how hollyweird worked and she had to eat and keep living.
Listen, I'm a huge, HUGE fan of Taraji (and Ms Avery), and Taraji is 100% correct regarding pay, BUT as someone who worked in that industry, their lifestyles are NOT what the regular 9-5 folks is. You don't/can't live in a middle middle to lower middle class neighborhood for a number of reasons, your mortgage is not $800-$2000, it's $10,000- $50,000, hell I had a friend who wear paying $74,000 JUST FOR THE MORTGAGE, (not sure why this person just didn't pay cash for the house), anyway, you're not driving a Toyota Corolla, you're not (some do), but you're not getting your clothes at Target, your blouses for meetings aren't costing $28 from (insert store), they cost $300-$500 and up. Your purses, shoes, etc it all adds up. THEN you have to pay your agent, manager, publicist, you're probably helping a few friends and family out so the money can go really fast if you don't watch it.And as I said, Taraji right 1000%, the pay is not equal and that needs to change but I don't see it happening anytime soon and that makes me sad.
You can tell she does not interview often, she’s wearing the wrong earrings that are interfering with the microphone (noise). It’s unfortunate because there are few interviews with her.
I love Margaret Avery! Have been a fan for a very long time. But I am also disheartened by certain things when it comes to this narrative. For as long as Hollywood has been Hollywood the dollars have always been what matters and what has also been true is that it will roll you up and spit out if you are not shown to be profitable. We’re in an era now more than ever that it’s not enough to be only popular and profitable with black audiences. You have to with white audiences also. Otherwise you’re NOT getting big dollars. In 2021 it was found that 54% of moviegoers in the US were white, with Latino/Hispanic making up 24%. Most of Hollywood isn’t making huge bucks off of film alone. That’s why you’ll see those that can get into the production side as Executive Producers and Producers so that they can get their money long term and on the back end regardless of how a film performs in the box office. Taraji wants $500k per film but let’s look at the one film she helmed solo and without a built in audience like the TP project she did. Proud Mary had a budget of 30 million and only made 10 million total. Why would any studio bank on her to not even break even? She’s right, the math ain’t mathing. Taraji isn’t a bad actress but majority of her roles are give stereotypical black woman who is angry, loud, bossy and kinda mean or bitter from hurt. Even when she’s in Boss mode that’s the underlying element and portrayal of her character. She needs to pick films with more range. Also I’m not mad at her expressing that certain things should’ve been in place for the cast. The issue is then why is that a discussion with the public when trying to promote your current project? That has become the primary narrative/headline for the film and not the performances and growth and bonding with fellow actors or how it enhances the original film and the play. Which means why would another studio want to take a chance on her (especially since Warner Brothers didn’t want to) if all she’s gonna do is air private business grievances in public and it hurt their bottom line. Regardless of race if you’re going to be in this game it’s about knowing how to play this game smartly and to your advantage. So it’s taking what you get and maximizing it. Part of her problem is she didn’t and that falls squarely on her and the people whose hands she chose to leave her career in. At this point it’s not really a race issue and more of a worldwide popularity issue and who’s on your team.
This was a long post but not nuanced at all. A company doesn't market the actors/movies and then uses the lack of profit as the actors' fault? Nah. They don't pay black women or black artists because they continue to get away with it.
“SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A OSCAR” SHE IS STILL BEAUTIFUL “ PUT THIS TALENT TO WORK”
Ms. Avery is a beautiful woman.
Wow she was told at 26 she was over the hill ! That's crazy ! Our sisters deserve better

She's so beautiful. I still get goosebumps listening to Miss Celie's Blues.
Ms. Avery, to me, will always be known as “Annie-Mae” in “Which Way is Up?” She looks great here.
This was an eye-opener to learn that even with an Ocaser nomination she hadn't worked for two years when the Color Purple wrapped. We need to keep advocating for our Black Actors to be treated equally. It's 2024 and this racism needs to stop.

Wow, thank you! Ms. Avery actually also confused me with her. 😂😂 I am honored to be likened to someone I hold in such high esteem. 💗
The grey hair on this beautiful woman got my attention. Dont think I know her. But she is beautiful. The host can get it too. Fine age wine looking women.
This is the original Shug Avery from the original Color Purple movie.
@@Marie24-q2t I see where they mentioned that. But I would have to re-watch to jog my mind. Maybe if that old Hollywood system didn't shut her out, this classy fine azz woman would be remembered like Angela Bassette.
She also played Richard Pryor's wife in which way is up back in 1978

❤She is beautiful and deserves many awards for being a black and very talented woman God bless ❤
2024 and we still dealing with this bull crap it is truly sad

So pretty. Should have been a Bond girl. James Bond that is 💜
such a gorgeous woman --
Why should actors be paid more than auto mechanics?
Quite stunning STILL
We all definitely wish to age as gracefully as her.
