Dude, I always enjoy watching the stuff you do. You know what the hell you are doing for sure! I like watching because it helps me learn the right way to do things. I really have respect for your talents. I wish I could do what you do. The more videos you post, the more I learn. You are awesome and I thank you just for being here.
I've done a lot of fiberglass repair work but have never gotten into making molds or casting parts. Just recently I started a new project build that will require me to make a battery box for an eBike project and decided it was time I learned. Watching your videos, they have helped quite a bit. The way you lay your glass is exactly how I've been doing it for over 30 years, by tearing out sections of mat not cutting it. Agree on resin as well, the stuff at Home Depot is junk. Wish I had some pictures of repair work I used to do on NASCAR southwest tour car bodies. Just as strong, flexable and difficult to tell where the repair was made, without adding any additional weight. I'll make sure to do a video of my project.
Glad you took something away from my videos, thats why I posted them, for beginners and for old dawgs like you & me.... I'M still learning more as I go, not often but every now and then I find something new that makes me a lil better.....Be sure to video your work, you may want to post it or look back at them in your golden years?...... Be sure to subscribe to my videos, I hope to have a lot of new videos on up-coming projects..... Thank you once again and best of luck to you and with your projects!
Biggest thing I took away from this was the importance of high quality resin... Man the difference between the two was like night and day... Great taste in music too...
Fantastic video for Thom Very well narrated and great examples of the products. Hope you are having some quality time with your grandson and the quad copters...lol Stay warm brother !
I had to use some cheap resin in a pinch yesterday . The stuff ordered was damaged in shipping and what a difference , You are so right the stuff was thick as molasses and just would not soak into the cloth. It is definitely worth spending a little extra money .
Actully, the QUALITY RESIN is Cheaper or the same price as the garbage stuff....you just have to order the good stuff while junk stuff is sitting on the shelf .
A couple of stupid questions- Did the PVA come off with it or is the PVA still on the board? If it is, could a second application be done and come off as easily? Finally, will epoxy stick to PVA? The demonstration of wetting out of the different resins was very convincing as to brand difference. Thanks.
Thanks for the video GasserGlass ! I'm new in fiberglass, a friend "teach" me how to fiberglass but all i've learned was wrong ! Thanks to you, now i know how to use pva, gelcoat and where to find good stuff and not the ebay crap stuff.. Just a question, how many time do you wait between each PVA layer ? They need to be dry before I put a new layer ? Thanks a lot from a French fan !
Timothé Stehlin ....YES..... let each coat of PVA dry before adding the next layer....... the first 4 layers should be MIST coats...... after that, get a littler heavier with each coat....WHEN you get good at it, your PVA will come out looking like a sheet of glass...... Ive been PVA-ing for 39 years now and still cant PVA perfect every time...... Go to this web site for fiberglass supplies ----> FiberglassSite.com
great film love it and detailed. i need to make a latex mold from casting plaster mold can you show me how and what to use then i will make my own fiberglass from the latex mold with many thanks
I wonder if the booth coating or liquid mask is a similar product. Isn't PVA water soluble as well? Either way, peel it or wash it off and you have a solution to the problem of paint sticking to the booth walls. Home run!
I've done a little bit of gel coat repair on boats and used it for sealing off the repair so it can cure.. At least that's how I learned to do them. Then just wet sand and buff and the orange peel and PVA are gone.
Thanks Ed, I hope the information in the video works or helps out anyone who can use it?.... PVA is also used to cover cars, cycles or anything that is shipped from over seas in storage containers, stuff that can be contaminated by the Sea Air ..... Another type of PVA is used to protect new Wide White Wall tires, it keeps them from getting dirty!
Nice test, but, can ya get a smoother finish on the Partall, The orange peel finish is gonna transfer to the Gel coat, 100%.. Where do you buy the good resin ??
thanks very much i learned something and that looks like a great product does tommy have to scuff the walls first or just spray it on and where do you buy that PVA at thanks
It's me again ! I have an other question, when you spray PVA, what pressure do you use ? 60psi like with the gelcoat cupgun or higher pressure ? Thanks a lot ;)
+Timothé Stehlin With the little touch up gun , Spraying PVA...Im between 75 and 85 psi...depends on humidity and temp.....low temp & high humidity, Higher psi ........ Warm temp, lower humidity, lower psi....everthing else is in the middle
I recently started making moulds and tried PVA. Based on your experience vertical surfaces would only take light most coats or it will run? I can never get to the wet coats even after 7+ light mist coats. Trying to learn this crazy stuff.
whatever factory tip came with the paint gun...60psi at the compressor in colder weather, 40 psi in warmer weather...25psi at the gun, youre basically spraying water.
FiberglassSite.Com ........ Is where I get the products used in my videos..... FiberglassSite.Com ........ Their email address is.... FiberglassSite@comcast.net FiberglassSite.Com ........ Mike Will Be The Man You Talk To On The Phone... Be Sure To Tell Him That I Told You To Call Him ........ He has everything you need to make molds, parts from cars to polls to roof's to decks and more..... He sells only the good stuff and does not even carry the cheap stuff.
. you have helped me in the past with a few questions .I make concrete statuary molds and last night i was doing some fiberglass . the glass has to be done with the part standing upright .I did one side of the part ,Turned it around and did the other side ,when i was done i turned the part back around to look at the completed piece and while i was working on other side all the resin ran down and out of the cloth. I got the resin from fiberglass site.com as you suggest . am i maybe putting to much resin in the cloth ? Thanks for any help you can give.
Im thinking you made it to thick or to many coats at one time...... You should to one light coat and let it cure....dont be heavy on the resin.....and dont use to heavy of fiberglass....Id keep working the first time till it starts to cure and THEN turn to the other side....you can use a heat gun or hair dryer to help it cure when you're making concrete molds .................. OR?................ You didn't shake the can up very well and used the water like part of the resin...... it does have to be shaken before using so the Binders can come up from the bottom of the can....Ive never had FIBERGLASSsite resin delaminate or have run out......
Hey buddy. Thanks for your videos, I have been watching now and then for about a year. I have a question. I have made a male mould out of foam and fiberglass and I wanna spray gellcoat on it. How do you manage the cleanup of the spray gun between each layer? Thanks again from Australia
How many layers of PVA would you need to spray to get the glassy effect on a mould? Say for making a carbon fiber part where the clear epoxy surface will come out of the mould glassy also and not need to be sanded etc ?
WELL....Real carbon fiber parts are not Glassy, they are dull....but SHOW carbon fiber parts like car hoods etc have a clear coat of epoxy resin or clear epoxy gelcoat first.....you let the clear dry before putting the carbon fiber layer in.....when you pull the part, it will look like glass...... you will need 2 or 3 MIST coats first, then you can lay down a heavy very wet coat.....it will dry to a high sheen
GasserGlass Thanks! Putting down the first layer of epoxy thick and letting it dry does give it a nice deep look finish. I will also try using a clear coat paint to give it that deep look and see what happens.
It may stick to the mold or the part....It just peels off regardless of what it sticks to.... its simply a PLASTIC lining between the two parts so the Resin wont stick to the Gelcoat
Its best to clean the gun after each use, the alcohol will slowly eat the inside of the cup and will grow funky stuff inside if not kept clean....However, I dont always clean up my PVA gun and keep PVA in it 24-7....I have to clean it out every few weeks as it glogs and I replace the gun twice a year too!

youre making me blush....heh heh
Man, you know your stuff! Thanks for the video. I'm about to start my first project, this will be a big help. Greetings from Scotland . David

Great taste in music too...
That is some magical stuff!!!!
I bet it would work great in a paint booth.
Yes Indeedy.....cost effective is the question?
Fantastic video for Thom
Very well narrated and great examples of the products.

Stay warm brother !
Dead battery's in the Quad Copters....gotta buy new ones damn it.... Thanks

Great demonstration. Thanks
Great product, used it many many times.
Excellent Video and info! Thanks for posting up
Not done any GRP work per se but I see a need in the near future.
Thanks for the video! I am just starting with fiberglass and this was very helpful!

GasserGlass Thanks a lot ! :) I'll train myself ;)
How long do you wait between coats of PVA? Fully dry, or just tacky?
always wait till it DRYS or DRIES
Perfect video
Amaizing
great film love it and detailed. i need to make a latex mold from casting plaster mold can you show me how and what to use then i will make my own fiberglass from the latex mold with many thanks
I wonder if the booth coating or liquid mask is a similar product. Isn't PVA water soluble as well? Either way, peel it or wash it off and you have a solution to the problem of paint sticking to the booth walls. Home run!
YES INDEED....Glad you brought that up, It dissolves in water too!!! ....smart guy!

Velvethamma
Yup, thats how it used to be done..... with today's designer gelcoats, there's no need to cover it with PVA for it to cure.
I've also sprayed it where you add a liquid wax additive to the final coat for curing
Amazing stuff. Thanks for the video Gasser.
Thanks Ed, I hope the information in the video works or helps out anyone who can use it?.... I'd give it a shot.
its an option for sure
well, i Do appreciate the honesty.. also some great tunes 6:35 :) so yea , im subbed !

Amazing.

great brother .....no words to thank u
That's amazing Man!!
thanks, I hope it helps him.
that is JUST what my boothcoat should do,,,and the way i aways seen it work...i dont understand the stuff i got PEEEACE
Just sprat it on...No Prep needed...just warmed up to dry
It's me again !
I have an other question, when you spray PVA, what pressure do you use ?

Great info, where do you buy your good resin from. How does it comparee to West System, I've used neither just asking. Thanks
Wait So will the PVA come off the fiberglass? I seen it come off the panel. But how about the other surface?
PS, parchment paper is great to have around the shop 'cuz NOTHING sticks to it (and it cheap)
Can I spray the pva to polystyrene or will it attract it ,? thanks , I want to make a big fishing cooler box . Great info mate , cheers
A very merry christmas to you and yours
And the very same Back To You As Well!
Wow
Do you just use it or us a wax release agent first and is that 3m over spray the same stuff
I recently started making moulds and tried PVA. Based on your experience vertical surfaces would only take light most coats or it will run? I can never get to the wet coats even after 7+ light mist coats. Trying to learn this crazy stuff.
I like the juck comments!!
sweet
thanks....it might work out in a pinch?
VERY COOL!
Thanks for a great video. Do you know if PVA will peel off epoxy?
YES INDEED.....and it becomes hard to peel, simple water takes it off, a hose or bucket of water
great! thanks!
Is it safe to apply PVA over a painted fender with gel coat?
Definitely sold me on buying better resin
What size tip did you use for PVA spray gun and what pressure? Thanks Much
whatever factory tip came with the paint gun...60psi at the compressor in colder weather, 40 psi in warmer weather...25psi at the gun, youre basically spraying water.
Mr.Roach could please post a link to distributor of quality fiberglass products .thank you keep posting plz

brother how can mix and spray pva with spray can or spray tin
Almost like mold release.
It is a form of mold release
Hey buddy. Thanks for your videos, I have been watching now and then for about a year. I have a question. I have made a male mould out of foam and fiberglass and I wanna spray gellcoat on it. How do you manage the cleanup of the spray gun between each layer? Thanks again from Australia

This may be a silly question but when I spray a mold with PVA and then glass over it does the PVA stay on the mold or is it going to stay on my part?
It may stick to the mold or the part....It just peels off regardless of what it sticks to.... its simply a PLASTIC lining between the two parts so the Resin wont stick to the Gelcoat
Where can i buy this product? im from Mexico.
Poliformas de México, recomendado y asesoría técnica incomparable
Can you leave the PVA in the spray gun or does it need to be cleaned right away?
Its best to clean the gun after each use, the alcohol will slowly eat the inside of the cup and will grow funky stuff inside if not kept clean....However, I dont always clean up my PVA gun and keep PVA in it 24-7....I have to clean it out every few weeks as it glogs and I replace the gun twice a year too!
that was cool ! that's the mold release agent ?
Thanks....Yes, thats one type of mold release agent... its normally used on new molds along with wax.... Its good stuff.
What do you clean your gun with after this?
i spray 2 or 3 hot cups of water thru the gun, it cleans right up.
well
Can only afford the crap for now.
If you’re gonna make a video, have enough class to shut off the canned music.
Awesome!
Thanks
