I would have recommended staying in The Witchery By The Castle....FAR more luxurious than the Balmoral Tim :) I've stayed in both several times....and hands down, the Witchery (for me) is the best in Edinburgh. Has a fab restaurant too....you might want to take Gabby with you though! It's a romantic gothic hideaway....feels very exclusive. They have about a dozen suites (My favourite so far has been the Semple Suite) you choose when you're booking on the website.

This hotel shows how nice a place can be when management and staff care about the hotel and their guests. It's impressive because they get everything people care about right. The touches they focus on to make the room and stay feel welcome and inviting, the care for cleanliness and keeping things well maintained... it's refreshing to see a place that is quality all the way through, and not just if you don't look too closely.
This is a hotel where paying for anything feels justified.

Very luxurious Scottish hospitality. Whilst I have visited Edinburgh a few times I have not unfortunately stayed at The Balmoral! I did note, of which I was not aware, that it is a Rocco Forte hotel. He now has a small number of luxury hotels. The only other one in the UK (having checked!) is Brown's in London. (Somewhere again I have only ever had lunch!) So, The Balmoral (with a pillow menu - a first for me to see one) in Scotland and The Dorchester in London, what more could you ask for?! Great to have been able to see inside another iconic hotel. Room rate based on two persons is, I feel, justified.

A most enjoyable video as always. As a Scottish ex-pat, I’m delighted to see that we can still get some things right in the “Old Country”. FYI, if fish is baked under salt you’re not expected to eat the crust, it’s there for decoration, and what you ate as a side dish was purée, not mashed potatoes which is what we eat with haggis. It’s odd that a former Michelin-starred restaurant got the amount of salt wrong, could there have been cheese mixed in with the potatoes? Here in Italy they add Parmesan along with the milk and cream. Keep up the good work…

Saw Dunrobin Castle and took a tour, also swung by Balmoral Castle where people were still leaving bouquets of flowers at the gate there for the late Princess. I was so impressed by the history saved, stored and on display throughout. Loved our journey through the beautiful countryside. The people of Scottland were warm, friendly and inviting. We did take a tour of Edinburg Castle. I was in charge of the 8 MM Sony video camera but when we got home it appears I forgot to take the lens cap off during my recording. I stayed at the Balmoral 25 years ago in summer. The heaters were on full. It was a sweat box! Everything was tartan - much more extreme than in your video. Even so, it really was a lovely old hotel.

My husband and I stayed there for a full week last March and I have to say it was our favorite hotel stay ever! Those whiskey fudge squares are amazing. Such a beautiful hotel. We stayed in several Castles while in the UK after our stay at The Balmoral. While each Castle had their own beauty and elegance, the accommodations paled in comparison to our stay at the Balmoral. Also the afternoon tea there is incredible, it’s only equal we found was at the Colonnades at the Senate Library. Well worth a visit.

I live in Scotland and am really privileged to be able to stay in The Balmoral Hotel a couple of times a year.
Incredible setting, furnishings and attention to detail.
But for me, the amazing staff really set this hotel apart from the rest.
Everyone I’ve encountered during my stays literally couldn’t be friendlier, more helpful or knowledgable about the hotel and the surrounding area.
If you ever get the chance, please check out this amazing hotel.

    Hi Tim,
Scotland is so picturesque. Never been in a hotel in Scotland. Lovely hotel very homely, loved your room they thought of everything. And you had an encasement round your mattress. I don't like a lot of salt either, cannot eat it if it's too salty. The breakfast looked very tasty.
The castle you went to see looked amazing.
Thanks for a great review Tim was very informative.

They will probably describe the music in the foyer as coming from a Clarsach rather than a harp. Far more relaxing than bagpipes!
When my dad was a student in the 1970s, it (as the NB/North British Hotel) was still railway-owned. It was possible to access it from the station and use the bath/shower rooms (back then, some rooms were not ensuite).
