  • It's late June 2019 at Spicy Exotics, and the purpose of this video is to show how we pollinate our flowers to set fruit. On any given night we have 3 or more varieties blooming. So we mix the pollen and cross-pollinate the different types of Dragon Fruit. On a beautiful night like this night in June, we typically see 100% success in cross-pollination.

    Hi Ty, just wondering can we freeze pollen and use it later? Also, if we can freeze it, how long is the pollen good for after it has been frozen? Thanks and love your video as always

      We do save it. Here in Louisiana, we have lots of humidity, so we let it sit in our Air Condition home from about 30 minutes to pull out any moisture, then add a silica gel pack to the storage container and freeze it. You can check this short video out that shows us using stored pollen. ruclips.net/video/bb884fCaQoY/видео.html

      It lasts 3 to 5 days for us. I have heard others using stored pollen 1 month to 1 year old.

    I do the same things but the problem I think the bees stole all the pollen from the stigma in the morning

      Apply as soon as the flower opens and this will not be a problem. To test for success, cover the flower once pollinated.

    Ty It appeared you collected pollen from the HC is pollen from a steral variety useful?

    • @Spicyexotics
      @Spicyexotics  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, it's only sterile to itself and some related clones. It usually works on other species.

    Ty I have a dark star flowering I think tonight no other pollen can I hand pollenate it?

    • @Spicyexotics
      @Spicyexotics  5 лет назад +1

      Drak Star is non-self-fertile, you can try, but I have never had success.

    My stem is not growing but it is green and it has not decayed too.in this case what can I do

      We need more detail to provide an answer, like age, weather, soil conditions.

    God dammit. I never knew we had to pollinate these things manually. We have been enjoying some beautiful flowers for the last two years and except one, none of them turned into a fruit. Stupid me!!!

    So if I have bought a fruit from supermarket so I can collect the seeds I would need to find out which kind did I bought so I can be sure it can (or can't) be pollinated by itself?
    I have my seedlings developing but now I'm not sure if I have "the right" variety (I'm not sure if I could get a pollen here in Croatia where I'm from)...

    • @jessicarenee1004
      @jessicarenee1004 4 года назад

      What color was the inside and outside of the fruit? any name on it?

    • @SixthyGTi
      @SixthyGTi 4 года назад +1

      I did a mistake and threw away the skin (which had the label of the manufacturer on it)...
      The flesh is white and the skin pink (with ends of the "fins" in green). Afterwards I managed to find out it should be Vietnamese white meaning it should be fertile (but again, I'm not sure if it really is)...
      In the meantime I also bought 2 fruits when I was in Hamburg in February but I still have to sprout the seeds... Hopefully it is not the exact same variety and I will have success in cross pollination if my existing plants are sterile...
      Cheers!

    Will the fruit from the cross pollinated flowers be different? What will the fruit be like for the reds that were cross pollinated with the whites and vice versa?

    • @Spicyexotics
      @Spicyexotics  3 года назад +2

      Fruits are no different with what pollen is used. Instead, the seed in the fruit is a cross between the mother plant and the pollen supplier.
