It feels like a bigger waste of money compared to just dubbing the original anime. Glad they stuck to the latter (probably due to said monetary reasons).

It's times like this that make me glad that we never got THIS version of Sailor Moon. Although it does make me wonder how they would've handled a character like Chibiusa (AKA Rini) since she's supposed to be from the future and is Usagi and Mamoru's daughter or even the Sailor Starlights, as for the outer guardians I could see them taking a page from Power Rangers by making them evil at first but become good guys later.

I applaud Ray Mona for making the documentary but to also get her hands of the unaired pilot! This is a monumental discovery in Sailor Moon history! The Sailor Moon we know but the American remake version, we don't know the full story of its production until now. Lost media has always been a fascinating subject to me and its amazing to see Saban Moon resurfacing again after all these years
Well. The reason it never came to be is because they knew what current year streaming companies don't understand. We don't want American versions of the original. We want the source material.

Bruh I got triggered with the name Blue for Mercury. SERIOUSLY!? BLUE!?! They could've gone for either Aqua or Wave ANYTHING! It just triggered me so hard it made me laugh!XD
TBH there's some things I did like about the pilot after watching it twice. Blue's (wheelchair) outfit is just one thing I liked because I wear similar clothes; I'm a wheelchair user too.

The Sailor scouts were already stereotypes, but they gave the US Sailor scouts each others stereotypes. Also, couldn't they find a frickin' black cat for Luna! I think they were changing things up to change things up! Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is a better live action adaption than this!
Comparing Toku Sailor Moon to this is criminal cuz when you actually watch it, it really feels like a lot of thought went into it in terms of characters and writing even if the combat and vfx were cheesy as all hell lelz

What most boggles my mind is not only did they go for the most stereotypical portrayal of those character archetypes, but they swapped them around. I mean, keeping Jupiter as the tomboy and Mercury as the smart one wouldn't have fixed the hot garbage way they portray the characters, but it would at least have made some logical sense.
@@StCerberusEngel The Anglicized names made sense based on the characters, adapting their real name or having a similar meaning to the original. Product of the times, but still had effort for that limitation. Aside from the censorship, that could go faster than Tuxedo dipping out, the actual script isn't actually that bad in a lot of places. There are even sections it does a much better job as a script than the Viz redub being a direct translation.

They had to get this on in the mornings on broadcast in the mid 90s, well before anime was the big phenomenon it would become later in the decade. They did what they had to do. LOTS more respectful to the material than 4Kids would have been.

Here in (North) America, animation is still regarded as being for kids, and a straight-up translation of _Sailor Moon_ (including the LGBT content) would've had 'conservative' parents complaining about 'the gay' being pushed into kids' faces and 'this is not content for kids' much like what's happening now with Disney and its recent movies and TV shows having LGBT content and mentions of bodily functions in the _Baymax_ show and in _Turning Red_ (the only difference between now and then being that the generation who grew up with the Internet is using it to counter homophobia, and also said generation grew up to take over media and push for inclusion of LGBT themes into what's still considered children's entertainment, and is doing it _despite_ what the radical right says.)

Yeah, back when Ray Mona only had the first part of the Saban Moon, RUclips put it as a recommend on my homepage, so I was curious and I watched it. What she found there, and the promise of a part 2 was enough to push me to subscribe to her. When she did post the part 2, was pretty late here, but stayed up and watched it. Needless to say, was shocked how much she actually found, not just the opening credits, but the pilot itself. And now that I've seen it, I can't in all honest say 100% for sure if I would have grown up loving it as much as I did the actual anime, I could have seen myself actually watching it when I was a little girl if they had gone through with doing it this way. Anyways, thank you for this video, and hopefully you're feeling better.
Hell, this version spits at Sailor Moon's face in order to make him look more useful. Tuxedo Mask served more like a distraction in the 90s, but Sailor Moon's Tiara Action NEVER NEEDED HIM IN ORDER TO BE ENABLED/USED.
My like three favorite things from Toonmakers Sailor Moon are Venus in Yellow, matches better with her planet. While orange is a classic, in the manga artworks by being Eternal and more recent stuff from Naoko she is more yellow in color then orange. If people really want her in orange then go for yellow orange, it's in the middle. But yeah, yellow fits more with the idea of "gold" being her color theme in notes from years ago that Naoko wrote. Silver tiaras, I just love silver. Beryl's light blue skin. Just simply her skin. I love blue. Bonus: Mercury's colors here remind me of the Live Action SM version of her uniform. I find that funny. It's interesting to notice. Also it's probably because the base is a human body but the CGI is a tad better executed then Crystal's, especially for like how it looks more proportionate and not spaghetti limbs lol, but definitely was still of the times. At least they tried lols
I'm just an old guy that likes to watch your channel now and then. My son loved Dragon Ball back in the 90s, so I was kinda required to watch Goku's adventures every week. After he grew up and went on with his life I didn't pay much attention to anime until he talked me into watching a show called SAO (yep, THAT show) and I was hooked. Again. Because we used to watch two shows in the 60s that came from Japan, Astro Boy and Tobor: The Eighth Man. Back even before Speed Racer. Yeah, I'm THAT old.😂😂😂
I have seen Ray Mona's documentary about her search. Seeing this clean version of the pilot was like getting a peek at an alternate universe. Felt like She Ra and Gem and The Holograms. I actually enjoyed the Skydancers cartoon when I was little, so I probably would have been into this. The song is kind of a bop.

I heard about 'Saban' Moon a while ago. It gave me a sort of 'what-if' idea where in the classic anime series (perhaps in one of the later seasons), they could maybe possibly recycle some of the animated footage of this as a cartoon within the anime, what's weirdly based on the 'real' Sailor Moon or rather an American take on her, even though in the anime she's a 'real' person and the real Sailor Moon had now become famous world. Also, someone close to her had sold the story of some of her adventures or something. Anyway, in my Sailor Moon V.M. fan-fic, this happens (with humourous results) where while Usagi, worried about Yuzuki's health since she's unwell, is trying to convince her long-lost twin not to go to school that day in case something terrible happens to her (which it does later on), Usagi get distracted by seeing an Americanised version of herself in an American cartoon, which obviously confuses her and which gives Yuzuki a distraction from Usagi 'over-protectiveness, allowing her to slip away (Yusuki really likes going to school, since it's all new to her). In my next fan-fic, which will be a Sailor Moon (classic) She-Ra crossover, as a running gag, the 'Saban' Moon will make another brief appearance, again Usagi note that this version of her looks nothing like her... yet 'Saban' Moon suspiciously does resemble Princess Adora... (lol)

Admittedly, it is still bad since for how Toon Makers made it nothing like Sailor Moon. It is on par with a lot of the series in the US that took existing properties and made changes against the originals and what made them good to begin with. At the time, they would have saved money and time by replacing the Japanese dialogue track from the Japanese anime with the English translated dialogue track. It is hypocritical to say "Nobody understands the Japanese stuff" since nobody knew what "Pokémon" was, but was brought anyway, but with changes.
I'm glad anime from Japan was brought to the west. Yes it was stupid that many people got away with the thought that nobody would understand Japanese stuff. I'm happy it was brought over. Anime and video games got censored so hard back in the day because the localizers had to deal with traditionalist countries and there were infraction concerns due to the strict policies placed on television shows and video games during that time. I'm happy this was rejected in favor of the Toei Animation version.
This was so 90's it was almost painful to watch. For some reason it reminded me of another show that was on around the same time called the Babysitter's Club.

Thank goodness we saw the dubbed anime here and not this pilot. Sailor Moon, along with DBZ, was my gateway into anime in general (didn't know Star Blazers fit the type when first saw it in 1981-2). looking at that school segment, it reminds me too much of The Facts of Life which certainly does not mix with the action portion, like they were creating two different shows with this concept. don't know when it occurred in the comics but could see the one reference of Batgirl/Oracle with the wheelchair. love the Scouts as they are in the anime. just wish back then they could've finished the Dark Moon Clan saga instead of leaving that in the air for me to eventually buy the VHS/DVDs for the resolution.
American anime is uncommon, and it kinda reminds me of the existence of Totally Spies, a cartoon that is in the style of a Japanese anime created in the french parts of Canada.

Truthfully this "Saban Moon" pilot has a few kernels of good ideas that would work excellent in an ORIGINAL work instead of as a Sailor Moon AU. Ideas they really should have snatched and put into a brand new IP include: - A group of interplanetary warriors escaping to Earth and hiding out while still fighting out in space. That's actually something I wish the OG Sailor Moon could have done more - The lack of amnesia used in the plot - The flying wheelchair that shoots lasers - SPACE SURFERS!!! Dude it's so cool seeing them all sail through space like that. We need some OCs doing that. - Basically more stuff happening in space. Make a space opera magical girl. Please.

Say what you will about 80s and 90s cartoons being made to sell toys, but She-Ra at least had substance to it. This whole thing just looks like an extended toy commercial, right down to the film quality, the overly hyper acting style and the camera mugging. I'm willing to bet the director was from an advertising background. It's uncanny.
It would of likely failed hard. Say what you will about shows from the 80s and 90s being long toy commercials. But IPs that survived that era had some depth and self-respect.

As much as people shit on the DiC dub it *did* open the doors for a lot of anime to follow alongside Dragonball Z, Pokemon and Digimon. Yeah, they changed a lot (Because 90's) but it got on TV and showed what Japan had to offer. Everything starts somewhere.
Not gonna lie, this version of Sailor Moon was honestly the STUPIDEST thing I've ever seen. Granted, I'm a huge Sailor moon fan (in a casual way), but this version is just. WHY?! On a side note, that I'm blue parody and dumb ways to die parody made me laugh very hard. I wish there were full versions of them.

It really did fail on every level. They were trying to copy the Saban formula but that formula about making the show as cheaply as possible(fight footage from existing foreign show dubbed into English with some new live action to tie a story together) Animation is expensive so making all new animation misses the point of the formula they are copying completely.
Funny how anime works. Sailor Moon wasn't my first anime either. My earliest anime (didn't know it was anime back then in the early 80s) I remember watching was Astro Boy. I looked up how old Astro Boy was and it premiered in 1963 which was way before my birth in 1981.
You know, when I was still in Middle School, I was still watching a show on PBS called "Cyberchase", and I was just beginning to get into Tokusatsu with shows such as "Kamen Rider" or "Super Sentai". At the time, I had a rather silly idea of trying to do an adaptation of Goranger with the characters of Cyberchase in a bit of a reversal of what this pilot did. Have the cartoon characters transform into the live-action superheroes. After seeing the result of this mess of a pilot . . . I'm really glad I didn't try to pursue this idea any further. That being said, the fact that this crappy pilot has finally been released after all these years is nothing short of amazing! Perhaps we might end up getting a chance to see Saban's 1986 "Bio-Man" in the not too distance future. If that ever happens, you're damn right I'm watching it! Thanks again for the review. Ho, WOW. I knew Saban Moon had to be bad, but WOW, it's worse than I could've believed. Yikes! SO glad DiC got the rights instead. Makes me all the happier and grateful I have over 10 volumes of the DiC dub up to the end of the Nega Moon arc.

As someone who watched the original Japanese Sailor Moon anime (with the first English dub mind you), I am almost glad that I have never seen this parody spin-off but at the same time, I have watched FernGully, Thumblina and of course, the Power Rangers... so I am a little surprised by this fact.
Also when I heard Robyn say "Bettle Borts" my mind went back in time to the days where my brother and I watched that show and yes, we did own the VSH tape to that series too.

TBH there's some things I did like about the pilot after watching it twice. Blue's (wheelchair) outfit is just one thing I liked because I wear similar clothes; I'm a wheelchair user too.

The Sailor scouts were already stereotypes, but they gave the US Sailor scouts each others stereotypes. Also, couldn't they find a frickin' black cat for Luna! I think they were changing things up to change things up! Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is a better live action adaption than this!
Comparing Toku Sailor Moon to this is criminal cuz when you actually watch it, it really feels like a lot of thought went into it in terms of characters and writing even if the combat and vfx were cheesy as all hell lelz

What most boggles my mind is not only did they go for the most stereotypical portrayal of those character archetypes, but they swapped them around. I mean, keeping Jupiter as the tomboy and Mercury as the smart one wouldn't have fixed the hot garbage way they portray the characters, but it would at least have made some logical sense.
Never thought I would be happy about DIC's version, but here you go.
It's not a good localization, but DiC's dub still holds a warm nostalgic place for me. Mostly due to the cast, I think.
@@StCerberusEngel The Anglicized names made sense based on the characters, adapting their real name or having a similar meaning to the original. Product of the times, but still had effort for that limitation.
Aside from the censorship, that could go faster than Tuxedo dipping out, the actual script isn't actually that bad in a lot of places. There are even sections it does a much better job as a script than the Viz redub being a direct translation.

They had to get this on in the mornings on broadcast in the mid 90s, well before anime was the big phenomenon it would become later in the decade. They did what they had to do. LOTS more respectful to the material than 4Kids would have been.

Here in (North) America, animation is still regarded as being for kids, and a straight-up translation of _Sailor Moon_ (including the LGBT content) would've had 'conservative' parents complaining about 'the gay' being pushed into kids' faces and 'this is not content for kids' much like what's happening now with Disney and its recent movies and TV shows having LGBT content and mentions of bodily functions in the _Baymax_ show and in _Turning Red_ (the only difference between now and then being that the generation who grew up with the Internet is using it to counter homophobia, and also said generation grew up to take over media and push for inclusion of LGBT themes into what's still considered children's entertainment, and is doing it _despite_ what the radical right says.)

Yeah, back when Ray Mona only had the first part of the Saban Moon, RUclips put it as a recommend on my homepage, so I was curious and I watched it. What she found there, and the promise of a part 2 was enough to push me to subscribe to her. When she did post the part 2, was pretty late here, but stayed up and watched it. Needless to say, was shocked how much she actually found, not just the opening credits, but the pilot itself. And now that I've seen it, I can't in all honest say 100% for sure if I would have grown up loving it as much as I did the actual anime, I could have seen myself actually watching it when I was a little girl if they had gone through with doing it this way. Anyways, thank you for this video, and hopefully you're feeling better.
Nice to see that the American Tuxedo Mask is just as -usless- useful as the Japanese version.
Hell, this version spits at Sailor Moon's face in order to make him look more useful. Tuxedo Mask served more like a distraction in the 90s, but Sailor Moon's Tiara Action NEVER NEEDED HIM IN ORDER TO BE ENABLED/USED.

My like three favorite things from Toonmakers Sailor Moon are
Venus in Yellow, matches better with her planet. While orange is a classic, in the manga artworks by being Eternal and more recent stuff from Naoko she is more yellow in color then orange. If people really want her in orange then go for yellow orange, it's in the middle. But yeah, yellow fits more with the idea of "gold" being her color theme in notes from years ago that Naoko wrote.
Silver tiaras, I just love silver.
Beryl's light blue skin. Just simply her skin. I love blue.
Bonus: Mercury's colors here remind me of the Live Action SM version of her uniform. I find that funny. It's interesting to notice.
Also it's probably because the base is a human body but the CGI is a tad better executed then Crystal's, especially for like how it looks more proportionate and not spaghetti limbs lol, but definitely was still of the times. At least they tried lols

I'm just an old guy that likes to watch your channel now and then. My son loved Dragon Ball back in the 90s, so I was kinda required to watch Goku's adventures every week. After he grew up and went on with his life I didn't pay much attention to anime until he talked me into watching a show called SAO (yep, THAT show) and I was hooked. Again. Because we used to watch two shows in the 60s that came from Japan, Astro Boy and Tobor: The Eighth Man. Back even before Speed Racer. Yeah, I'm THAT old.😂😂😂

I have seen Ray Mona's documentary about her search. Seeing this clean version of the pilot was like getting a peek at an alternate universe. Felt like She Ra and Gem and The Holograms. I actually enjoyed the Skydancers cartoon when I was little, so I probably would have been into this. The song is kind of a bop.
I like the really interesting, and thought out song cues. Nice production value.

I am so glad the DIC dub was my first introduction to Sailor Moon, it probably would have not been in my top 10 because of it.
Ah yes, the 90s troupes! The prime of these are not only powerful but mastered at a certain extent. I didn't even cringe at all in the video because well ... I grew with it lol. tbh, if given the chance it would have a small following and a bunch of children fans for the time.

I heard about 'Saban' Moon a while ago. It gave me a sort of 'what-if' idea where in the classic anime series (perhaps in one of the later seasons), they could maybe possibly recycle some of the animated footage of this as a cartoon within the anime, what's weirdly based on the 'real' Sailor Moon or rather an American take on her, even though in the anime she's a 'real' person and the real Sailor Moon had now become famous world. Also, someone close to her had sold the story of some of her adventures or something. Anyway, in my Sailor Moon V.M. fan-fic, this happens (with humourous results) where while Usagi, worried about Yuzuki's health since she's unwell, is trying to convince her long-lost twin not to go to school that day in case something terrible happens to her (which it does later on), Usagi get distracted by seeing an Americanised version of herself in an American cartoon, which obviously confuses her and which gives Yuzuki a distraction from Usagi 'over-protectiveness, allowing her to slip away (Yusuki really likes going to school, since it's all new to her). In my next fan-fic, which will be a Sailor Moon (classic) She-Ra crossover, as a running gag, the 'Saban' Moon will make another brief appearance, again Usagi note that this version of her looks nothing like her... yet 'Saban' Moon suspiciously does resemble Princess Adora... (lol)

Admittedly, it is still bad since for how Toon Makers made it nothing like Sailor Moon. It is on par with a lot of the series in the US that took existing properties and made changes against the originals and what made them good to begin with.
At the time, they would have saved money and time by replacing the Japanese dialogue track from the Japanese anime with the English translated dialogue track. It is hypocritical to say "Nobody understands the Japanese stuff" since nobody knew what "Pokémon" was, but was brought anyway, but with changes.
I'm glad anime from Japan was brought to the west. Yes it was stupid that many people got away with the thought that nobody would understand Japanese stuff. I'm happy it was brought over. Anime and video games got censored so hard back in the day because the localizers had to deal with traditionalist countries and there were infraction concerns due to the strict policies placed on television shows and video games during that time. I'm happy this was rejected in favor of the Toei Animation version.
Early Pokémon had very little change when localized, if you can believe it.

Thank goodness we saw the dubbed anime here and not this pilot. Sailor Moon, along with DBZ, was my gateway into anime in general (didn't know Star Blazers fit the type when first saw it in 1981-2). looking at that school segment, it reminds me too much of The Facts of Life which certainly does not mix with the action portion, like they were creating two different shows with this concept. don't know when it occurred in the comics but could see the one reference of Batgirl/Oracle with the wheelchair. love the Scouts as they are in the anime. just wish back then they could've finished the Dark Moon Clan saga instead of leaving that in the air for me to eventually buy the VHS/DVDs for the resolution.
American anime is uncommon, and it kinda reminds me of the existence of Totally Spies, a cartoon that is in the style of a Japanese anime created in the french parts of Canada.
Well the closest we have to American anime is Avatar: The Last Airbender and Teen Titans, though the rebooted Bee and Puppycat looks pretty cool for an American Anime, they even have OLM on board to help make it

Truthfully this "Saban Moon" pilot has a few kernels of good ideas that would work excellent in an ORIGINAL work instead of as a Sailor Moon AU. Ideas they really should have snatched and put into a brand new IP include:
- A group of interplanetary warriors escaping to Earth and hiding out while still fighting out in space. That's actually something I wish the OG Sailor Moon could have done more
- The lack of amnesia used in the plot
- The flying wheelchair that shoots lasers
- SPACE SURFERS!!! Dude it's so cool seeing them all sail through space like that. We need some OCs doing that.
- Basically more stuff happening in space. Make a space opera magical girl. Please.

Wondering what would it be like if the west got this instead? It like She Ra or others similar shows aimed at girls (and some guys) more importantly how would Japan feel about this.
Say what you will about 80s and 90s cartoons being made to sell toys, but She-Ra at least had substance to it. This whole thing just looks like an extended toy commercial, right down to the film quality, the overly hyper acting style and the camera mugging. I'm willing to bet the director was from an advertising background. It's uncanny.
It would of likely failed hard. Say what you will about shows from the 80s and 90s being long toy commercials. But IPs that survived that era had some depth and self-respect.

As much as people shit on the DiC dub it *did* open the doors for a lot of anime to follow alongside Dragonball Z, Pokemon and Digimon. Yeah, they changed a lot (Because 90's) but it got on TV and showed what Japan had to offer.

Not gonna lie, this version of Sailor Moon was honestly the STUPIDEST thing I've ever seen. Granted, I'm a huge Sailor moon fan (in a casual way), but this version is just. WHY?!

It really did fail on every level. They were trying to copy the Saban formula but that formula about making the show as cheaply as possible(fight footage from existing foreign show dubbed into English with some new live action to tie a story together) Animation is expensive so making all new animation misses the point of the formula they are copying completely.

My earliest anime (didn't know it was anime back then in the early 80s) I remember watching was Astro Boy.
I looked up how old Astro Boy was and it premiered in 1963 which was way before my birth in 1981.
i remember watching your videos years ago, this was great. seeing and hearing your noice again! i'm glad your still making videos.
You know, when I was still in Middle School, I was still watching a show on PBS called "Cyberchase", and I was just beginning to get into Tokusatsu with shows such as "Kamen Rider" or "Super Sentai". At the time, I had a rather silly idea of trying to do an adaptation of Goranger with the characters of Cyberchase in a bit of a reversal of what this pilot did. Have the cartoon characters transform into the live-action superheroes. After seeing the result of this mess of a pilot . . . I'm really glad I didn't try to pursue this idea any further.
That being said, the fact that this crappy pilot has finally been released after all these years is nothing short of amazing! Perhaps we might end up getting a chance to see Saban's 1986 "Bio-Man" in the not too distance future. If that ever happens, you're damn right I'm watching it! Thanks again for the review. As someone who watched the original Japanese Sailor Moon anime (with the first English dub mind you), I am almost glad that I have never seen this parody spin-off but at the same time, I have watched FernGully, Thumblina and of course, the Power Rangers... so I am a little surprised by this fact.
Also when I heard Robyn say "Bettle Borts" my mind went back in time to the days where my brother and I watched that show and yes, we did own the VSH tape to that series too.
